Don't think pedals spin in an oval. If your foot sits on top of the axle for a traditional flat pedal, it basically does that throughout the whole circular motion. The only catch here is that your circle center is not the center of the BB, it's offset by the same amount your feet is off the axle of the pedal. The black circle is what the crank/pedal spindle spins, at the center of that is the BB. Some our local rippers / engineers came up with a very unique "axle-less" pedal. Machined here in Calgary, Alberta and testing in the rocky mountains. They use a big ol 6902 bearing for spinny duties. The pendulum (drop pedal) is super interesting. Million dollar idea: every frame comes with three headtubes welded in a neat row to the front of it. Users can play around with reach to their heart's content, then use an angle grinder to cut off whichever ones they don't end up using. Or save them all for resale value. Choose your own adventure.
