Dale just posted a comprehensive deep dive into Lewis brakes. The "Counterfeit Origins" chapter is super interesting. Solid investigative work! https://youtu.be/59xC6Q51po8?si=iWQy3wxS_URGbXqT

You are no way boiling oil by depressurising it with a plastic syringe with a square seal.

Shimano specifies a boiling point of >200°C @ 1 atm. Unfortunately, the vapour pressure is listed as "data not available", but I'd be surprised if you could boil it under whatever vacuum you can produce in a plastic syringe without an external source of heat. The last time I did that to Shimano mineral oil nothing happened, anyway.

On average you'd have less kick, however there's always the chance your hub is up against its point of engagement and you'd get that kick right away.

I think at this point you need to make a new "Tangents" forum section

hey all, i started a travel-specific discussion so tech rumors can stay focused on weird/new product - https://www.vitalmtb.com/forums/hub/how-much-suspension-travel-do-you-w… it has data from our 2024 survey that just wrapped up (thx brines for mentioning it)

On my current build I have used a set of plates to tie the bb/main pivot/shock mount all together with the downtube. So far it has worked well. The plates are probably a touch on the thin side, I had Send Cut Send do them and they have limited options in 4130.

agreed. the first 2 years i rode DH i went through probably 6 derailleurs a season, then i learned to pick better lines and not smash the hell of out things.

Hold up… You carry a spare derailleur when you ride?!? Are your trails on Mount Doom or something?

Very well written. Another thing I can't help to wrap my head around are the weights we're strapping to the unsprung side of our rear ends: Shimano RD-M980 (2011) 175g Sram XX (2011) 180g Shimano RD-M9120 (machanical) 241g Sram Transmission XX (incl. Battery) 465g Not a total apples to apples comparison, but looking at this I can't help but feel this isn't the pinnacle of drivertain design.

Transmission, it's weaknesses, and "solutions" for those weaknesses all seem kind of insane to me. Hey we have this little uvula looking thing on the back of frames which the derailleur attaches to. Usually, derailleurs aren't that expensive these days but just in case, it's meant to bend instead of allowing the derailleur to break. Because our frame is made of steel, we can usually just bend it back for free! How nice! Since we moved on to alloy/carbon, we had to make the hanger its own item. We went with aluminum alloy so it's stiff and light, but if...

I actually download the enduro mag app to read about it. Looks like a sweet bike. I dont get why manufacture's aren't producing DH ebikes. This makes so much more sense then a 130 ebike. I want to ride my shuttle trails on these and not shuttle. Maybe that would be to much like a moto 😱 with a dual crown and coil shock + a full face.

The Lewis parts have arrived! Fitting was straight forward, aside from the lever needing a tiny bit of filing to make it clear a part of the master cylinder body. I now have adjustable bite point on my Maximas. The adjustment range is really good, when maxed out there's only about 10mm of free stroke. In the photos both levers reach has been set to the same distance from the grip. On the front is the Lewis lever with the bite point set to the maximum and on the rear is the original Trickstuff. There's a good 15mm of difference...

When you say: "Why is this a thing we must do?" do you mean: A. "Why do our very expensive brakes suck and require creative hacks to work?". or B. "Why does strapping the lever down help our brakes work better?" If you meant A, I can't tell you for sure, other than to say, either bike brake engineers lack the skill to make bike brakes perform consistently in real world conditions with real world maintenance programs, or they have the skill, but don't feel the consumer pressure to design the brakes with a priority on consistency, and instead are...

You're overthinking this. Weight really matters, in fact its critical, if my bike is lighter than yours. If your bike is lighter than mine then weight doesn't really matter, ride quality matters more (of which my bike is superior, of course)

Hey, yes these are from CounterShox. the blue one on the fork is straight off the moto bike. I tested on my Yamaha 450 first and then had to try on DH bike. I knew it would have a bigger effect. The mount is off a 85cc dirt bike, they have the same diameter clamp as dorado. The one mounted to the seattube is lighter, about 1lb. I 3D printed a mount so it doesn’t rub again the frame. These TMD are not adjustable, from talking to the folks at CounterShox, they have put so much R&D into weights, springs...

I've been away for a while, so not checking regularly for a couple weeks, so I spent a couple hours trying to catch up, prolly 12 or so pages the content and tone of comments has changed drastically in the last year. I can only assume with increased users and engagement, which has brought along with it, a much more negative and judgy tone. I was drawn to this comment section for the rumours and innovation (and spy shots, and great info from the likes or TEAMROBOT, Cascade, Dave, and many others) but I find myself turned off by the...
