Fuck those cranks. There's SUCH a good structural reason why holes in cranks are a bad idea, with the exception of the sram cranks. The reason that all those 5dev cranks break despite not being very lightweight is 100 level shit, and I hate that the mtb industry is stupid enough to entertain it. A 2 dimensional truss structure is fucking terrible in torsion, and most of the crank arm sees a LOT of torsion. Not to get all “well actually” on you Schroeder, but… your braking traction actually comes from the backside of the knob so the ramping has no effect here. Those nice straight edges on the back of the knobs are what’s giving that good bite on a tire like the Tacky Chan or the DHR.

I will also add that on the shop end we saw significant degradation in the 40-50% P&A margin across a lot of brands and categories over the last 10 years. 40% GM on any physical goods should be a minimum at each stage of the value chain in any sector. Below that, there's then not enough margin to cover taxes, overheads, build in marketing budget respective of the stage in the journey so the whole ecosystem becomes precarious.
