For those who don’t want to watch, specialized found radials faster on trails due to the conformation of the tire. Roads are worse with radials. My non science based opinion agrees. If someone watches it fully does spec plan to release lighter radials? That’d be dope.

In this video there's a discussion on how Spesh has been trying thread patterns with different angles in order to optimise radial and lateral stiffness. About 8 min in they are discussing how rolling resistance depend on surface and how that translates when it come to these so called radial casing tires.

Raleigh going under as part of this is a real kick in the teeth. It’s a big part of British industrial and cycling history, it was once the biggest bike company in the world with a huge footprint in Nottingham. Growing up everyone wanted a Raleigh bike for Christmas. I do hope they can find someone to take it on, the name holds real cultural significance.

8/7/2026 9:36am Same, but I'm more extreme in my assessment regarding trail Schwalbe radials. They can be downright scary in the wrong application. Like your rim ends up on the ground while the tire is mounted when landing from jumps. Keep adding air and it feels like a basketball dribbling. Any questions about the DHX or updated DH casing let me know, both were my projects. In general the DHX does everything our current dry tires do, but has more capability for high load high speed conditions. I designed it to excel in the bike park oriented World Cup tracks but still not give up performance in soft or natural sections compared to current dry tires. Ideally I wanted to simply the racers’ tire choice: if it’s dry and fast- DHX, if it’s soft or mixed- HR3, if it’s wet- mud spike. The updated DH casing is pretty well explained...

This is where I'm at with radials these days. They are great in a specific use case (like our PNW winters) but outside of that I prefer standard casings.

Amaury was on radials when he won at Val di Sole in the rain and mud, which I guess means he was on radial Dans? Definitely not a production tire. I put my radial Trail TCs back on after having reverted to HR3 EXO+/ DHR2 DD for a few weeks. Jesus, the squirm/vagueness in the back is sketchy AF. I had forgotten just how weird the radial Trail is in the back. The rear just felt like it was wandering all over when climbing, and then randomly steps out in corners before catching (especially flat corners). I'd like if someone with actual insider info can comment but my impression is that radial casings are not used much at all in WCDH, certainly nowhere near 'on every podium'. The only time I've actually seen a radial Tacky Chan was on Reece and Hattie's bikes in South Korea. Never seen one on a commencal. I'm not 100% on whether the fronts are sometimes radial but the fact that everyone is using cut Dans very frequently with "no plans to release a radial Dirty Dan" makes me think probably not. IMO a radial casing in the rear at WC...

Anybody ridden the Ethirteen radials? Getting the Grappler radials soon, heard very good things about the Grappler pattern but very little about the new radial casings.

Much different casings and a lot more going on with the new DH vs DD. The butyl insert in the new DH is waaaaaaaaaay stiffer than the old one or what’s found in the DD casing. It also has different geometry-thicker at the base near the bead and tapers as it goes up the sidewall. I believe it’s also taller than the insert in DD so it extends higher up the sidewall. And then the sidewalls are topped with a layer of EXO for additional cut protection. I’m no longer at Maxxis, but I was working on this launch up...

Assuming the pit-scavenged test pilot tires a couple of local bros have brought by the shop are at least very similar to the final “New DH” casing, that new high-hardness butyl insert is insanely stiff. It seems borderline impossible to puncture that sidewall, and the support must be significant. The rest of the tire didn’t feel too different from DH casings of the past. Interesting that Maxxis is pushing a new casing with which they encourage riders to drop pressure when other brands are pushing a more pliable radial casing and more psi.

It's been mentioned in the Bikenomics thread before that Specialized is getting out of clothing and now in the tech rumors thread that Specialized 2FO shoes are out of stock everywhere. Anyone have any viable alternatives that are as stiff, have the parallelogram cleat box, etc? Bonus points if they're like the 2FOs with regular version that's light (but still decently stiff) and a DH version with extra toe box and stiffness. It's been really nice having the exact same shoe but with slight differences for the 2 different genres. I realize any good options will probably be above the...
