@ballz - Great to hear you got it figured out and that it was not the hub.

Thank you both for your replies. It made me dig deeper and the hub is, in fact, innocent. Two things seem to be happening instead - the RD makes this metallic clang when the bike bounces, with or without chain, which is odd. The entire wheel rings quite a bit when this happens, which adds to the overall acoustic impression that confused me. I am not sure what's going on with the RD as it has the Hall lock and it never gave me problems before, but at least I am not going mad about finding the culprit anymore.

Hey @ballz , We occasionally get feedback about the noise that the pawls make when they engage the ratchet ring during initial pedaling movement, but your description sounds pretty extreme and not the norm. Can you drop us a line at support@ethirteen.com and we can dig into it with you. Thanks!

The car analogy is a stupid one because you don't have cars sharing a road with other users who are going 10x-15x slower (2mph avg walking speed vs. 20-28mph cutoff). Saying that easy delimiting can be addressed by enforcement is a terrible solution. There's one park nearby where the managing agency hates bikes despite them being 80% of the users, and actively enforces a 20mph speed limit with rangers and radar guns. They literally hide behind trees on fire road connectors they know people use to connect the few singletracks and slap you with a $400 ticket. I do NOT...

I say the quiet part out loud: the huge assistant rate is mostly needed by heavy, out of shape riders. If you're light or in shape you'll notice that all full power bikes from the last 5 years have enough power. For light riders the full turbo settings are often overkill. So this extended motor power combined with bigger battery will lead to more people reaching higher/more remote areas and trails. In Europe we already have historic pushback against mountainbikes on trails in many countries and just recently there was a new initiative by the biggest country in Germany to...

forbidden bikes have similar wheelbases than their competitors with short chainstays they increase cs and stack but reduce reach

The interesting thing is that the differences are apparent at both slower and faster speeds. Where you are positioned between the wheels makes a much larger impact than a few millimeters difference in total wheelbase. The difference in F:R ratio is surprisingly important in tight switchbacks, tech climbing, etc. The longer Crafty feels more maneuverable even in the slow tight stuff. An extreme example is if you've ever owned a BMX bike with rear pegs and have rode around standing on the pegs - the front end pushes wide at any speed and you have to lean on the bars...

For sure -- I’ve owned a series of XXL Santa Cruz bikes and know exactly the front wheel feeling you’re talking about. You turn as gently as you can, twist your hips to the outside, lean the bike, weight your outside foot, and the front wheel goes “aight imma head out” and you go teeth-first into the center point of the turn. I think an under-discussed aspect of a long front center is how it changes the spatial relationship between your center of mass and the front contact patch. When you lean a bike, you’re limited in how far to...

Theoretically yes but I don't think that's what's happening with most brands. I think I mentioned this before but I had a XXL Hightower V3 and that bike felt so long and cumbersome. Felt like the front wheel was in a different zip code. My new XL Crafty has nearly identical front triangle geo but fits perfect and feels much easier to maneuver. Instead of the front wanting to push wide in every corner, it hooks up and carves the corner. It's counterintuitive but when the F:R gets way out of wack, the short chainsay actually makes the bike feel...

I listened to the episode and found it interesting. I have to wonder if some of it is that taller riders are just historically used to bikes with shorter RCs so that’s what test riders end up preferring. Santa Cruz also talked about changes they make when making a bike for taller or shorter riders on their Tallboy episode of The Roller Door and while they didn’t go into detail as much as the Spot discussion, the takeaway was kinda the same that shorter riders preferred longer RCs and taller riders preferred shorter RCs

If you change nothing else you'll have less weight on the rear so you're more likely to spin out. However, longer chainstays can allow for higher bars, shorter stems and you don't have to focus as much on keeping the front down. So my real world experience going to 465 mm chainstays is that I haven't noticed an increase in spinning my rear tire on steep climbs. If anything it's probably better since I'm in a more natural position on the bike.

This a common straw man argument I see on this topic. It’s important to remember that anyone capable of going that fast uphill is only do so with a lifetime of skills as a foundation . Anyone in a pro xco race is likely never putting out 1500w in that race, and if the are it’s for about 5 seconds during a sprint finish. Theres just a lot more nuance man. No human is putting out world tour sprint finish power for the same duration as a 800wh battery Humans are creatures of the path of least resistance. If you...

This seems completely unnecessary though. Financing and leasing cars makes sense because they are necessary in most of western society, but blingy brand new mountain bikes are not. You can have almost as much fun and exercise on a $700 marketplace hardail as a $12,000 ebike. Financing toys just seems like a bad idea, yet a ton of people already do it for SXS, boats, and motorcycles. Nice bikes are cool, but going into debt or leasing something because you need to keep up with Joe Shmo next door who has a Mercedes Sprinter van and pivot ebike with titanium...

I made that video - it was funny how many people refused to believe it was possible and aggressively wanted to think that Fox would send that many shocks out like that! O-rings can do it too, its why shocks always have disproportionately large washers to support the bottom out o-ring. But yeah the Float X bumper is pretty weak - the X2 and DHX2 is a little better. The software for BYB and most data loggers is enough for the majority of what you are looking at - position and velocity distributions etc. Each damper will always have slightly...

Interested in how this shakes out. I had the same bike and ran the stock SuperDeluxe air shock, a DVO Jade X, Fox X2, and an Avy tuned Bomber CR. Avalanche was my favorite, after Craig changed the rebound tune to a poppy/playful one. DVO was the worst, SD wasn’t far ahead. X2 was pretty good but not very durable.
