Penultimate test in this series. Very surprising difference between the High Roller 3 and the Assegai even when run with the same MaxxGrip compound and similar DD casing! Let me know your thoughts?

https://bridgemi.com/outdoors-life/e-motos-sometimes-mistaken-for-e-bik… Not to totally derail things, but I was thinking about Surron and some other lite emoto manufacturers who who refer to their products as ebikes when they're clearly mopeds or motorcycles instead. Then I ran across this article from a local state news source of how everyone is dealing with it, which i already knew but, I got to thinking what's the potential for a class action lawsuit against Surron for mislabeling and purposely marketing their products as ebikes? Trail centers and even legitimate ebike manufacturers should be able to find standing and it would be a whole lot...

Fairly surprised to read this. I've been running the Assegai for years, as well as many riding buddies. For the dry conditions we have out here on the Front Range, it has to be the most predictable tire I've ridden for any kind of Enduro/DH application. I've had no complaints with the MM Radial either.

For me I'll stick to the all-round tire like the kryptotal fr or assegai. Simply because they're good in most conditions. Why do I not switch to HR 3 or Argotals in loose conditions? Because for me it makes sense to stick to the tire that I'm used to. I know when it starts loosing traction, I know how far I can lean it and for me, that is far more important. If it's been raining for weeks and conditions are as bad as it can get, I'll still use a loose conditions tire because it doesn't collect the mud...

In my experience there isn't a tire that will make loose over hard feel good, imo its one of the hardest conditions to ride well. Loose over hard is a condition I ride a lot and have found the assegai to be pretty good for it, Im not a fan of it in mud. There could be other set up things that can cause front end wash outs but ill stick to tires. IMO the dhr 2 is a decent front tire but I have found it lacks bite on turn in lean angle, it does feel incredible in berms...

The original post feels like a prank because there is no front tire with more consistent grip than the Assegai because it was specifically designed to eliminate the dead zone between the center grip and the side knobs. Before the Assegai, the primary Maxxis DH front tires were either the DHF, DHR2, or the High Roller 2, each of which featured a large gap between the side knobs and center knobs. As others have mentioned, it's that gap that creates the "dead zone" between hooking and sliding on the DHR2 and High Roller 2, and especially on the DHF. In...

I went through like 3 levels of understanding with the DHF. At first the dead zone between center and cornering knobs was scary. Later I found it gave good feedback for when the bike was leaned over and I was on the cornering knobs. Eventually I found I no longer needed the feedback the channel provides. I feel like I...

This is wild and speaks to different people’s experiences. I dislike the DHF because I don’t think it offers any improved cornering grip and the grip that is there is vague and hard to tell when you’re near the limit. The Assegai on the other hand has better grip overall and I can tell better where I am at relative to its break free point. The only downfall to me about an Assegai is its rolling speed.

I know there's going to be a Bosch update to let you adjust how much run-on each mode has. That Alex Bike Tester guy was showing a beta version of it, and I thought he said that was coming in July. Not sure what all is going to be in this June announcement, sounds bigger than just a little update.

I posted this in the Loudenvielle thread but I think it might prompt some more discussion about team strategy in general and the role of changing lines and effort levels right before a race run. The overwhelming strategy that everyone was saying coming into this race was to "maintain position up top and turn it on in the steep". The thought was that you can't win or lose in the pumpy section, and all the differentiation would be done in the steep corners. Everyone was wrong. Luca went 1-1-1-2 in the first sectors before falling back to midpack. Benny Cool...

Nope. Had one on order but cancelled it after riding the Mistress. I have owned two Megatowers and a Tallboy, though, all in XXL.

The interesting thing is that the differences are apparent at both slower and faster speeds. Where you are positioned between the wheels makes a much larger impact than a few millimeters difference in total wheelbase. The difference in F:R ratio is surprisingly important in tight switchbacks, tech climbing, etc. The longer Crafty feels more maneuverable even in the slow tight...
Theoretically yes but I don't think that's what's happening with most brands. I think I mentioned this before but I had a XXL Hightower V3 and that bike felt so long and cumbersome. Felt like the front wheel was in a different zip code. My new XL Crafty has nearly identical front triangle geo but fits perfect and feels much...

Taller riders historically getting the shaft with the one size fits all chainstay approach, has been my experience. It takes time to adapt to a longer rear end and riding through your feet and hips. The longer you've been on a short rear end, the longer it takes to recalibrate ones riding style, but the benefits are certainly there afterwards. There's just a weird in between period that makes you think short rear ends aren't so bad.

Waaaaaaay less. Way way way less. I think that’s less to do with weight distribution and more to do with body position. You don’t need to drape yourself over the front wheel to keep it down, you can just stand up and keep a pretty neutral body position.

If you change nothing else you'll have less weight on the rear so you're more likely to spin out. However, longer chainstays can allow for higher bars, shorter stems and you don't have to focus as much on keeping the front down. So my real world experience going to 465 mm chainstays is that I haven't noticed an increase in...
A higher stack is going to be better than a lower stack, everything else being equal, but it’s not a full solution. With a higher stack, it’s harder to get your weight forward and actually weight the front wheel on techy climbs and into turns. It’s more comfortable because you’re not forced either into a deep squat or a pike plank position as much. But it’s not going to change the basic fact that a standing rider will always have the overwhelming majority of their weight supported via their feet and thus distributed between the two contact patches according to...
