RoJo1 Added a reply to Front DH Tyres Accurately Timed: Albert Radial vs Assegai
2/25/2026 7:22am Can't wait to test them. Honestly the Albert was a big surprise to me, it's not as aggressive as the Mary but it wasn't a muddy day where I would have expected to need a Mary. Will find out 😁 Also interested in the theory about new stealth mods to DH casing.

2/25/2026 7:16am You need to test the Magic Mary radial. Its a much better/versatile/aggressive tire than the Albert. But I'm not sure if testing tires objectively will work as there are so many variables.

2/25/2026 7:15am Very interesting. I personally find the DD casing to be the best feel for me for a front tire, so feel somewhat vindicated by this. I am curious to hear what your findings on the HR3 end up being, for a couple reasons. First, it rolls noticeably faster than the Assegai, while retaining very sturdy and supportive side knobs. So it should fare better from that alone. But here on Vital forums there has also been a bunch of speculation that the DH casing version of the HR3 features a stealth revision to the layup, making it more compliant. So...

2/24/2026 7:55am Hey all, I've kept you waiting a bit too long for this next instalment while I worked on some frame matching tech. Let me know what you think?

6/19/2025 10:49pm I agree the test is valid. It's a typical Enduro build versus a Trail build, can't argue with that. People (me included) now want to answer the next question that is from all the differences between the two bikes, which had the greatest effect. I used to run a Pivot Firebird, coil both ends, FR1950, short cranks, so as burley...

6/19/2025 10:25pm All the people commenting about the tires needing to be the same is missing the point. I don't want to put a rekon exo tire on a 170mm bike unless I want to fix a flat every ride. I purchase an enduro bike to push it descending in technical terrain, the tires need to keep up to that task. I personally run an aggressive tread Enduro front / DH rear casing on my big bike and slightly faster tread Trail / Enduro casing on my little bike, because I don't like fixing flats. Another thing that is tough to measure...

6/19/2025 10:22pm Yah I think if this happened there wouldn't not be as great a difference as people think there would be. So this past 2 yr or so I went from a 165mm build then moved all my parts to a 138mm frame (Similiar weight too). Since then I have moved back to the 165mm frame (same parts) then lightened up said 165mm build this spring mainly in rotational weight. My take away was with a burly build the drop from a 165mm frame to a 138mm frame wasn't worth it to me. It didn't pop or pedal so much better...

6/15/2025 1:01am Fab test. Would love to see it on the same tyres to answer: if I can only buy 1 bike, but switch tyres depending on where I am riding, which should it be? Actually, scrap that, N+1

6/15/2025 12:57am Yes, exactly. It'd be a very valid test because for people who are only going to have one bike, it will tell them what they're sacrificing for that extra travel. They probably won't be using DH tires on their long-travel trail bike if that's the only bike they have and they pedal up. Lots of people over-bike because they like the extra squish. My 170/165 is built up mostly the same as my 160/145, and not very different in spec than my 160 hardtail.

6/5/2025 11:57pm I'll check for sure, but I have in a drawer 5 year old Centerline rotors that were subjected to ~450.000 vertical meters of descending and were run I think exclusivelly on Sram sintered pads (lets say 1,5 sets per season). They are worn down to 1,65-ish mm (they are half way worn). I will check the bridges, but I'm fairly certain it is not a problem on my set of rotors. I do know what you are talking about as this exact issue happened to me on an old set of Formula rotors that had many holes on two separate...

6/5/2025 11:57pm It's 2 and 4. Larger rotors do store more heat (as there is more mass it takes more energy to heat them up) but this is a good thing. Your ebike and heavy tires will require more energy to slow down than other setups. If your talking about a system weight of 90 -> 100kg that's 11% more energy required to decelerate, which could push your breaks over the temperature window. The other part is the pad and rotor combo your using could have a lower temperature window than previous setups. If your now using organic pads and previously metallic...

5/28/2025 9:16am Yeah, I forgot about suspension setup in relation to the tires. Fuck, this is so tricky! I actually like a slower rebound I think. At least I'm most often close to the fox recommendation and don't open up rebound all the way as some people seem to prefer.

5/28/2025 8:06am https://www.schwalbe.com/en/radialtires-mtb "We recommend initially using the same air pressure as a cross-ply tire with a comparable carcass construction (e.g. Gravity or Super Gravity). However, since Schwalbe radial tires are more flexible than conventional cross-ply tires even at higher pressures and retain their positive characteristics, the air pressure can be adapted much better to the riding conditions. For example, if the track conditions require a higher pressure to prevent punctures, this is easily possible with Schwalbe radial tires without having to accept disproportionately large compromises in grip."

5/28/2025 8:05am Not tested MM radial yet. I didn't explain the ride quality very well. I think what I am observing on the bike are two different frequencies of bumps coming through. Radial had less high frequency chatter, the kind that gives you arm pump/fatigue and in this way it feels like less friction in the suspension. However, it gives more low...
