Not to sound like a dick but I hope most people ignore this. 1) Martin is one of one. You don't ride a bike like him and neither do I. 2) According to the telemetry data I've seen, most (good) riders do in fact use their brakes for ~85% of a descent. Even Neko just noted at the WC level guys are on their brakes 80% of a run. 3) The whole point of a brake is to take kinetic energy and turn it into thermal energy. The more "room" a system has with respect to heat management, the better...

Investing in a stiffer caliper seems like a limited marginal gain vs. investing in better temperature management. Anyone have a clear explanation in how much extra heat is absorbed/lost by larger, thicker rotors? From my experience temperature management is so key for DH- for parks & long descents- for consistent brake points and minimizing arm pump. On my saints I invested in the MT-RT905 (XTR) 203s ice-tech rotors that most shimano WC teams run, coming from the base deore 203s. The XTRs take slightly more time (maybe 5-6 corners vs. 3-4) to get up to temp but I have yet...

This is a little off topic, but how do people feel about more powerful braking system vs larger rotors. Both weigh more and deliver more braking force, but which is best? In the past I've stuck with whatever cheap calipers my bike came with e.g. codes, and bumped the rotor up from 200mm to 220mm. That's an easy win of...

From a compliance perspective, more fluid in the caliper=squishier brake lever feel, so a good reason to change rotor thickness might be to get preferred lever compliance.

If you like the 220 rotors you have, I would not recommend going down in rotor size at all. If you'd like to mess with 2.3mm rotors, get them in a 220 size. It sounds like you're picky about brake feel (which is great by the way, no shade) and I think you're going to immediately notice the lack of power if you go down in rotor size. I certainly did.

I've got them on my Scott Ransom - I like them, I like the look, seller threw them in for free when I bought the frame. I like the spatial void that comes without having a stem. Would I buy them again on their own? probably not. Would I buy a bike that came with them? sure.

So I just bought a emtb that came with a 12 speed cassette. It looks trick, but after riding a super gnarly trail the lowest cog I used was 4th. It was slower than walking speed and I struggled keeping the front wheel on the ground while climbing, I have no idea what the 3 lower cogs would ever be used for. Conversely, I only get up to ~9th and that's going as fast as I want to go through the trees, and it's topping out the assist. Why did they put a 12 speed on this bike, is that...

I have 11s 10-42, pretty much never use the 10, rarely use the 11 and 42, but I ride with high assist. I can understand people trying to use less assist needing 10 or 11 gears. The issue with the SRAM 8speed stuff was they made no convincing argument: it wasn't much cheaper or lighter, I guess they said it was more durable?

My ebike came with 11 speed 11-42, which is all the range I need, but I'm always double shifting up and down, and the 11T wears out first. I would like 8 speed 11-42 with replaceable 11T, and a nice strong 8 speed chain and rear mech. Isn't this what Zee and Saint should be, with a short cage mech and 11-25 cassette for Race, and a mid cage and 11-42 cassette for Park/Ebike?

12 speeds seem excessive on most bikes, and are certainly excessive on e-bikes. I run 11 speed on everything.

Chain, cassette, and rear derailer ground clearance would be better with smaller cogs. The stuff I was climbing was plenty steep with roots and lots of rock ledges. I was having issues with the front wheel coming off the ground, plus if I was climbing any slower it'd be faster to walk up.

If we fit a trendline through all the data, we find that the riders are on average 1.6416sec quicker per run. If we then correct Conner and Ryan's laptimes to compensate for this progression then: Conner Enduro: Mean = 110.68sec Min = 107.85sec Conner Dreadnough: Mean = 109.94sec Min = 106.30sec Ryan Enduro: Mean = 102.58sec Min = 101.98sec Ryan Dreadnough: Mean = 100.82sec Min = 100.77sec Conclusion: The Enduro is slower for both riders when taking into account laptime progression with run number.

I've tried a number of different shock configurations on a number of different bikes. The idea that the Super Deluxe is somehow a bad air shock is a bit of a misnomer. What the Super Deluxe does lack is the tunability of a Float X2, but in outright performance, I'd say its right up there with the best of them. ...but don't listen to me. A number of RockShox athletes have won a whole bunch of WC/EWS races on the (air) shock (eg: Hill, Pierron, Moir) Obviously on the coil front, you've got Loris, Reece, Brosnon etc - Dcamp can...

I've held off for so long on making a stance with the mixed wheel thing, I really wanted to ride a number of bikes before drawing any conclusions. But, here it (kind of) goes - if you're looking for a larger wheel experience like what 29ers offer but are not of large stature, the mixed-wheel is all it's cracked up to be. Rear shock performance is tough. Using this test as a model, the bike is just as important as the shock unit. In the case of the Spartan, I rode the 38 with two diff cartridges (Grip and Grip2)...
