I'd always assumed that the ideal pressure was as low as you can go without hitting the rim (too often), puncturing or rolling the tyre. Unless you're hitting something like Vink Line, in which case rolling speed becomes important. There's probably an interesting test running over a rock garden /root nest with a DH tyre at low pressure Vs a lighter casing at higher pressure (ie both as low as you can go without flatting tyre or rim) to see what the difference is in terms of speed and repeatability

This test was just a first attempt at collecting some data to see how feasible the whole testing process was. I agree that the transfer of the findings into other settings are limited (I tried to allude to this in the conclusion), and that we need much more data. I would love feedback on how you think the testing protocol could be improved in the future to make it more relevant to you.

Does that help with pedal strikes as well?

If anyone is curious to continue the experimentation, you can get a lot more clearance at no additional cost by cutting off the ends of your handlebar, too. Sometimes as much as 60mm of added clearance on either side!

I relate to this. I too think front tire pressure is the more important variable and often end-up with a similar setup where I just run a higher pressure in the back for security.

No, I didn't find myself having to adapt to the lower pressures. I had a fair amount of riding time on these pressures previously and so nothing came as a surprise. Combined with the fact that I was on a flow trail with CushCore Pro inserts that provide decent sidewall support, it just felt like a more damped version of the higher pressures with more consistent handling.

Good points. Your explanation of higher pressure deflecting more (and being slower) matches the explanation in the Wolf Tooth tire pressure calculator somebody else shared earlier in the thread, and it makes sense. My subjective experience was that the higher pressures rolled faster, but this could be because the trail was not too technical and so there was less deflection, or more likely, that my perception was off and influenced by my prior assumptions. I like the idea of straight line rolling tests of a variety of surfaces. I will give it some consideration.

Great test. I'm not entirely sure on the assumption that higher pressure = lower rolling resistance for MTB. Higher pressure can cause your c of g to have to rise/fall more over bumps and dissipate energy. If you had the appetite then straight line rolling tests over a variety of surface roughnesses would be cool.
We all know the theory: lower tire pressures mean more grip, and higher pressures roll faster. But when it comes to real-world speed, which one really wins? I set out to answer this with 30 timed runs down the same track. ◾ The Experiment Two sets of tire pressures were chosen for my 88kg (194lbs) weight: 25/28 psi (front/rear) for the higher pressures and 18/20 psi (front/rear) for the lower pressures. These pressures maintain a consistent 0.9 front-to-rear ratio, with the high pressures aligning with recommendations such as those from E13 . After three warm-up laps, each tire pressure setup...

Great work on this! I'm really curious to see how the results stack up — the variety of tyres in your test should provide some useful insights. Will checkout the video!

Great test! I bet the DHF would still win this... ok, I'll crawl off to that old guy thread now, lol. Edit: I really like how you did a head-to-head comparison each day to control for the day's conditions and your comfort with the track.

Amazing test! The results are surprising (to me at least). What is it in your opinion that makes the vigilante so fast?

I can tell you that the Argotal is absolutely horrible on hardpack or loose over hard, so they'd knock it down for that. The shoulder lugs just fold over way too easily leading to loss of traction. It's fantastic on softer surfaces and rolls nicely otherwise.

Interesting how poorly the Schwalbe fared. I have the Radial Albert and for sure I would not put it out front, but it seems pretty good to me and very impressed by the hard wearing nature of it. It takes a long time to figure out the pressures, you need easily 5psi more than a non radial tyre.

Doing some micro-shootouts comparing a few tires (or products in other categories) is high on our to-do list next year. Everything is so good these days, that zooming in and comparing some really similar products would be rad. Especially with tires when visually so many look similar. I also really want to ride the Shredda. Thing looks mean. It's also very on-brand for me....
