I agree with the others that that many lift days and you can justify a 'park' bike of some kind but- I'd keep the Megatower as your park rig and maybe look at a lighter trail bike for your pedal rides. Only reason is- most of those parks have 1 or 2 good DH bike trails- the rest are kinda...

Could probably do it in steel. Robotic laser weld all the joints and smart use of a bunch of flat plate. BMX style flat plate dropouts and key points on the rear end. No heat treatment step needed so cuts out a big step. Could do it in stainless steel and cut out paint. Factory direct from Taiwan with no middle man, there is probably a factory that would end up making more per frame doing this customer direct at $1k than they make per frame now.

Maybe, although the DSW frames might cost even more- still need to be welded and they require a bunch of special hydroforming and that tooling. I think to make a really cheap frame you need to get away from welding. Or go fully robotic- which is how I think department store bikes are made.

I think to do an actual decent sub $1000 USD (MSRP, not something on blowout sale) enduro bike you'd need to invest into casting tools which are fairly expensive. Cast the head-tube and BB Shell/pivot pickups. Cast the seatstays left and right sides, cast rocker link and cast the chainstay from the bottom. Could probably bond very basic round, straight...

Thanks! As to "async" racing, 100% that is a big part of it. I actually considered a very similar approach as V41 but I'm super allergic to building anything that leans into Strava's infrastructure based on their track record. They've shown very little good faith when it comes to playing nice with apps that leverage their API. Things are moving along here. Hoping I have something out there in ~4 weeks Best Jeff

5' 10" here, short legs (30" inseam pants, longer torso)- on a S4 Stumpy EVO (470-475 reach depending on settings). I'd prefer 460 reach, but it was either S3 445 or S4 475. Running seat slammed forward with slightly modified clamps and 35mm stem and lots of spacers. Need a few more rides on this setup to see if I...

I like my aluminum Stumpy EVO and as you said- lots of them around and can get some crazy good deals on used. Mine has been setup lighter with a 160 fork and now currently it is my 'big' bike with a 170 travel 38 on the front. Plenty of adjustments provided to do either decently well imo. Probably not...
Got a good ride in on the short bike... I'm surprised at how much different it feels even though in my head 48mm (difference in wheelbase from my normal bike) is not that big of a % change. Anyway- this thing feels great to me- seems to be able to carve switchbacks (we have a lot) instead of just steering...
How are we calculating F/R ratio? I assume it's (WB-CS)/CS = F/R ratio? If that's the case- I may have accidentally ended up with 2 bikes with the exact same F/R ratio (S4 stumpy Evo and an old S2 Status). Could be an interesting comparison... Have only been jumping the status, but might need to set it up for some...

I remember an identical discussion to this one two years ago, and @Dave_Camp either you or someone else who's smart said that the needle would definitely bottom out on something and break if you cut the travel reducing spacer to increase stroke length. At the time, this very smart person in the forums (I think it was you, Dave) was trying to impress on us how densely packed the inside of these shocks are to get everything to fit. Sounded like there was zero room to play with and you needed to replace the body with the correct length needle...

Yes there’s a different needle and corresponding damper body assembly for every size stroke. It’s a lot. I know the coil shock cannot tolerate any messing with the stroke length- as there can be metal to metal contact. I think you’re right and the air shock is same. At least I wouldn’t gamble on it. 5mm is a lot when...

So theres a new needle for every 2.5mm of stroke? Thats a lot of needles, Im suddenly understanding the dislike of HBO from suspension designers.

it's a cone on top, then same diameter all the way down. But I can't remember if it will run into something else if it's too long... best to just run it the intended way- ie correct body/needle for the stroke.

No. The 50mm needle is actually longer than the 55mm needle. So if you run a 50mm needle with 55mm of stroke you will be activating the HBO earlier and for longer (as a % of the stroke). Think about it: 50mm needle activates the last 20% of 50mm = last 10mm of stroke (40mm free stroke until HBO). Same...
