I've got a little conversation piece for everyone—I've been riding a Maxxis' High Roller a lot the past year and a half, and was curious how Continental's Argotal would compare since it's pretty similar. I rode them back to back the past few months as a front tire to see what the deal was. And to try and better understand why I've shifted to really liking these mixed-conditions, open tread designs so much as a front tire over the popular Assegai-esque designs. Here is the article - https://www.vitalmtb.com/features/argument-against-transition-knobs-con… The TLDR is that they both are great tires for a wider...

Jacks announcement took a few of us by surprise last night. It's sad that one of the best riders in the world, arguably the most charismatic too is unable to secure a ride for next year and in some ways, coerced into retirement. I hope he finds a role somewhere, he would be a fantastic "face" of a company. The content would be top level. Jack is majorly responsible for MTB in Australia spreading so far, his influence on youngsters and his personal approach to grassroots racing that I have seen first hand is commendable. He truly is one of...

1. Andor - this was supposed to be about bikes? don't care, its brilliant so will take any opportunity to recommend it - if you had someone hassling you to watch it, they are right! If not, you can watch it AND BE THAT PERSON 2. Return of downhill racing - when I opened I felt like I would work on 3 DH bikes a year, now I've worked on 4 in the last WEEK 3. Better parts availablity, especially from Rockshox - still have a long way to go but I'm going for positive reinforcement here. I remember when...

Here’s the thing. People get hired into positions of power. They start thinking “I gotta do something!!!” The problem begins when “do something” turns into “change the thing”. The “something” they could do is at all costs protect the core identities that surround the current position. With all the current fuck-ups in business branding you’d think some lessons had been learned. Nope, they can’t help themselves. I actually appreciate that the logo on my 2025 Fox Factory DHX2 is exactly the same logo that was on the shock on my 1994 Cannondale Super-V 1000, and on my Fox Factory Twin-Clicker...

I know this is old but I can’t afford to run lighter than DH casing on the rear. I bent and broke too many rear rims on trail tires. Even riding blueish trails I was denting rims. Gotta remember that there are big boys and girls who really reef on their back wheels haha

I got a used 2022 S2 specialized status 160 for similar use (bike park, pump track, pedaling around with the kids etc). I’m too old and sore to jump a hardtail anymore. I run the suspension and tires super stiff. It was pretty beat, but got it for $900 and threw some used parts bin stuff at it. Been perfect...

This is not a bike suggestion but more a suggestion on the transition. Our 4 year old was amazing on balance bike, had heaps of fun, and also very independent (resistant to outside help?). Also, pushing kids over and over to help them pedal sucks. I got a ramp - one of the pre-cut modular ones you can get from various people. Ours is a Jigsaw Jumps version. I put the ramp up in the yard with a table on one side and our daughter quickly learned to push her bike to top (they’re about 30cm high), mount the bike...

Triple that - my son did not have a tricycle and couldn’t pedal at first. Same as others- he could balance the bike fine but wasn’t able to pedal for a while. Finally figured it out and was motivated to keep up with other kids since he got dropped on his strider. Haha

All this talk about smaller batteries to reduce unsprung mass on the rear end of a DH bike is interesting, but I kind of chuckle when I remember within the last year there were World Cup racers were janking together auto water dripping setup thingys to their bikes to cool their brakes.

Thanks for chiming in, Dave. I think you described my impressions perfectly, I have a light wheelset with light tires and a heavy wheelset with heavy tires and the light tires feel worse in every way over bumps and chatter. I feel like I'm getting kicked around a lot more, and with the heavier wheels I'm tracking so much better and the ride is so much smoother. Now, of course the performance of the tires themselves is different, so I suppose the real test would be to glue lead weights onto my light wheels with lights tires and see how...

Late to the discussion- but I think you'd have to be a pretty good rider doing A-B-A-B testing to feel 250g of unsprung weight on the rear wheel. The unsprung weight on the rear end is probably about 5kg- wheel, tire, brake caliper, cassette, derailleur, chainstay/seatstay, link etc. 250g is a small % change. Another thing I didn't see any...
I have my 4 year old on the 16" Commencal and my 6 year old on a Specialized P.1 Trail 20". On dirt- run the tires almost flat- like 5-10 psi. The disc brakes are a game changer for a kid- they actually work with their weak little hands. I got both bikes on sale at different times- the 16"...

In June I did a lap in Leogang with Iago Garay on the same new bike that Ella was running, and it looked very production ready. Seems like all the 130 or 140mm bikes (like this Cannondale Habit) are now 150mm bikes, and the 160 bikes are now 170 and poised to get the axe in the lineup (like the rumors about the end of the Megatower). In a related story, Iago was freaking pinned.

Guys, don't worry, Alan Greenspan told me that markets always work things out and they arrive at optimal output, consumption, and employment on their own. We live in the best of all possible worlds!
