Yes, Jeff interviewed people at DJI/Avinox and they said tried to partner with existing bike companies when launching the motor, but were basically told no thanks by everyone. As the story goes, that's why they created Amflow bikes. Creating a complete ebike wasn't plan A.

Thank you chaps, I loved the pod (which I listened to while driving my Ford EV - they do exist!😁). Did you get any impression that DJI tried to partner with existing bike companies when launching the motor? I imagine if a large, established bike company were approached in 2021 with a motor that disregards the 750w requirement of most markets, that they'd've been 100% disinterested. Selling such a bike would jeopardize brand trust, their company stores, dealer relationships, required recalls, etc... Once you're over 750w, why not 7500w? Since DJI already have experience clashing with FAA, DOI, DOD, DOT...

The average rider does care about efficiency, most just don't know how to articulate it. They talk about the bike feeling slow, or that they're working really hard on climbs, and making improvements to how efficient the bike is (mostly by going to faster rolling, lighter weight tires since most are on traditional drivetrains) makes a huge difference to their ride experience. Can't forget the average rider isn't smashing wheels and ripping off derailleurs all the time, and shouldn't build their bikes up like a lot of us do.

I don't think most people articulate why they dismiss gearboxes very well, or at all haha. For me, I'm not too interested in them for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I don't have the issues with derailleurs that others seem to have, I don't smash them or snag them on rocks, and I race DH and enduro in Utah and Colorado so there are plenty of opportunities for me to do so. Secondly, I like mechanical drivetrains and don't like grip shifts. Unless I have missed something, all mechanical Gear boxes have to use a grip shift to pull cables...

I typically use the climb switch once per ride. I like to turn it on halfway up the climb when I remember I have it and might as well use it. I tend to turn it off halfway down the descent when I’m puzzling over why my suspension isn’t working. I suspect I am not in the minority.

I always interpreted that as a Trojan horse for headset cable routing

Wasn't this settled shortly after the people-standing-on-derailleurs stuff? The axle takes the direct load, not the frame (or am I misremembering?)

Great question. To your point, I think the cannibalism is worse than that, because instead of wanting multiple pedal bikes for different sorts of pedal days with granular differences between each model, one ebike is pretty much fine for everything. In the past, as a MTB pedaler, I would have loved to have at least three mountain bikes: a long travel enduro bike, a shorter travel trail bike, and maybe a hardtail or XC bike. Maybe more. If I wanted to give up on pedaling and get an ebike instead, I don't need two ebikes. For ebikers who want to...

Earlier this year I went to People For Bikes’ Bicycle Leadership Conference. I’m not a PFB member, I don’t feel like a shill for them, but I have an in person experience which seems relevant to this: I learned that they feel that e-motos pose an urgent threat to existing routes to schools, etc. They’re still supporting new routes, but...
Honestly, thank god... I couldn't care less about 32" wheels. Im closer to buying a 27.5" bike 32" one.

I also noticed that none of the bigger brands (Specialized, Trek, Giant, Santa Cruz) launched a bike with the M2S motor today. Specialized I get, since they have their own, but the others kinda made me raise my eyebrows and wonder who was turned off by who. Longer lead times?

The motor brands are all much larger and much better funded than the bike brands. So to some degree the ebike market is becoming an emotor market. Arguably the bike brands are riding that wave.
