@sspomer I had a BMC trailfox 29er, but I just sold it. It had a piggyback DBair, DVO Diamond fork, xo1 11 speed shifting, reverb dropper, and chinesium carbon rims with EXO+ DHRIIs and a Tannus in the rear.

Does anybody complain about the Ibis? On the longer travel models, yes, but not on this short travel. It rides great.

I'm not saying that "DW link requires a rising to falling rate", I'm saying thats whats very common with shorter travel DW link bikes, probably because no one is going to run a coil or large volume piggyback shock like the X2 on it, and is a very popular suspension tune for light trail bikes.

I don't buy it. With a shorter fork, there is less leverage on the frame, so for the same strength less material is needed. Additionally, these bikes aren't AS heavy as 6"+ enduro bikes, they are HEAVIER.

My point isn't that these bikes shouldn't exist, its that why are they so portly? The suspension is lighter. The frames should be lighter, since the fork axle to crown is less. You don't need Codes or Saints. You want good EXO tires, but I'd argue you don't need DDs. You can probably get away with slightly lighter rims.

My 6" enduro bike is built tougher but weighs (and cost) less. I love my aggro hard tail for how it handles differently, but it weighs a ton less than my enduro.

Yes, but most trail bikes with DW links (including Giant) have this same rising to falling leverage rate. Also, with any short travel bike, when you start pushing it you're going to run into the limitations of the shorter travel.

Saying the Ibis is completely linear is misleading- for the first half of its travel its rather sharply rising, then it falls (like most DW link bikes). Right in the middle of your travel its at the lowest leverage ratio, so it will keep you pretty high on most hits (this also goes along with my experience on DW bikes). Its only the larger hits where it will allow you to use full travel, something pretty important on a shorter travel bike.

My old BMC trailfox with EXO+ tires and inserts weighs 30 pounds flat, with a 160mm DVO fork (not the lightest out there) and a piggyback rear shock...

Great job. Surprised how heavy all of these bikes are. Though I'm the first to admit weight is far from the biggest part of the equation, it is a bit of a bummer none of these fell into the 27-28lbs range at $5K.

Though I love the short travel feel for a lot of...more

I fail to see the point of a short travel aggro XC bike when they average over 31 pounds. My 6" enduro bike (that can pedal extremely well with light tires) weighs just at 30 pounds.

Any thoughts on this VS the new S Enduro? The numbers are pretty close geometrywise (Pole vindicated!), but one is from a giant corporate machine while the other is a small sexy startup.

The biggest reason is for SEO!! You can have star ratings next to your google search results which greatly improves click-throughs, although When I googled this article there were no stars- Call me Vital! Jk i"m a developer, not a marketing guy.

I'm not fan of the star ratings either. For example all the steep seat tube angled + plenty of AS bikes climb very well but then usually the enduro bikes are heavier than a XC bike and they need to lower the rating. Stars oversimplify too much.

The upper eyelet is turned for two reasons....more

Vital should consider ditching the star ratings. Of the fifty bikes Vital has recently reviewed, 46 were 4s or 4.5s (2 5s and 2 3.5s). Yeah, I know, modern bikes are really good. But telling us the vast majority are either "excellent" or "outstanding" isn't helpful, and it makes the ones...more

I ordered 2. UPS collected $277 from me before they would turn the frames over.
