Canfield makes cranks down to 150mm I believe - they’re a cheaper option at $200.

I am pretty sure we aren’t far off the AXS stuff actually being cheaper to manufacture than the legacy stuff. I am sure the shifter is already without needing any of the small mechanical parts. It’s not a complicated system and the components wouldn’t be expensive if the trickle down goes right.

Pretty funny how Vergier's running an O-chain on a bike with an idler pulley and very low pedal kickback to begin with. Not trying to start discourse again; just an observation.

I don’t get this, wouldn’t you want to go 11-44 instead? Lighter weight and smaller chainring. I could see derailleur compatibility forcing this, but you lose most of the upside.

Oooo, I like this topic! I'm a parts-breaker and I've got (bad) experience and (worse) opinions. frame: this is the hardest one. I haven't had good luck with aluminum frames unless they're suuuuper heavy and you get to inspect alignment before purchase. I go carbon, lasts longer and doesn't tend to eat shocks and pivots as fast. All I know...

I love this topic, and have also tried to build up my own low maintenance enduro bike. I have a bad habit of breaking stuff, and I hate missing rides or wasting money due to parts that couldn't handle heavy use. Ain't nobody got time for that. I'd echo what people said about SRAM 11-speed. Set it and forget it. I'm convinced the 1195 X-dome cassette is made of Adamantium. I was several thousand miles into an 1195 cassette that I got for $20 from a friend who'd already put several thousand miles on it, and I only took it...

Also! Only sorta off topic, but suspension maintenance is super important to keep the bike feeling good. In a season of racing I’d probably shoot for 3-4 lower leg oil changes on the fork and 1-2 air can lubes on an air shock? Maybe none on a coil shock unless your DHX2 is going to blow up? Thoughts? Simple fork / shock service is fairly easy to learn so you’re not taking it to a shop multiple times a summer.

Literally every cross country bike I work on has the rebound set wide open and feels like a pogo stick. It really shouldn't, but its been a curious observation! My feeling is that they are all so far past needing a service that they are getting a large amount of damping from the seal friction. The 'theories' all depend on a number of things, not all of which you have control over and it all depends on how deep in to the rabbit hole you want to think about it! the TL;DR is go ride and test several different spring...

Oh… I certainly hope so. Dual crowns just make an awful lot of sense for >160mm forks.

Formula is teasing new product launch on Friday. Is this the elusive Selva XL dual crown enduro fork? If so, I am tempted - very tempted.

Anyone who knows me know what's coming... how can we make CSUs reliable enough to handle our riding and current geo? Or should we go to dual crowns for anything over 150mm? Personally, I'd like to see DC forks take over, I'm so sick of CSUs dying. Maybe I've just had astronomically bad luck, but in 8 years I've gone...

The o-chain thing is, in my opinion, the absolutely most confusing thing happening in mountain biking today. The math says it should provide zero benefit above speeds of like 6 or 8 mph (or whatever, pretty slow, depends on hub engagement but you know... pretty slow) YET, there are tens of elite level world cup racers using them, and I'm assuming thousands of people that most would consider to be regionally elite. I feel like there really needs to be a quantifiable deep dive into what it actually does. But I guess if it does or doesn't provide any benefit...

?? AXS shifts when you push the button, there's no way for the system to know where the cassette is in its roatation. Previous geration Eagle AXS and Eagle cable systems all use the same cassette.

Shimano just released a ton of budget/mass market products under the Cues 'groupset' so not exactly leaving the low end market to others. More like Shimano doubling down on their dominance of the low/mid end of the market.
