7/25/2024 9:28am I spent a day on Transmission on a rented bike the other day and it did shift impressively. Still, I remain a bit of a caveman and as such I prefer X01 11 speed on my Relay (all steel cassette, light, cheap, great shifting) and an XTR 11 speed on my Smuggler. It's not a money issue though. It's ground clearance and weight which notably effects rear suspension performance. But also, my previous AXS ruined 2-3 rides due to battery issues and losing a day of riding to have a .1% cleaner shift, is not a tradeoff I want to...

7/24/2024 5:04pm I love the mechanical nature of my bikes and understanding how it works. It’s some how less appealing to me when it all goes into a little black box.

7/24/2024 11:46am Shandro seems to be very well connected and is quite prominent in the North American gravity scene, so I think Loris would get the boot first if there is conflict there. I doubt they’re actively trying to get rid of him though. It makes sense that he would want a change of scenery since it hasn’t gone well lately.

7/24/2024 11:32am Just looked at the current and previous year's Hightowers. Every tier is Sram only. the lowest build has Sram NX, then there is a cable GX, then multiple AXS build tiers. They've entirely given up on Alu full suss bikes. (Did PON tell them that GT fills that market?) There's now a wireless NX equivilent. Its not hard to see the benefit to eliminating the routing that only benefits the current bottom models. ESpecially on an SC which is fully guided in the front triangle, its not just a case of drilling two holes. As others have said, surely shimano...

7/24/2024 11:20am I'd argue it's more human nature, people want 'new' and new is wireless. Give Santa Cruz a reason to save 55c per frame for not having internal guides and they'll take it. I think one of the biggest issues is that wireless only locks you into SRAM currently. It's crazy that they're releasing these before Shimano has a wireless drivetrain out. Lets say the next version of SRAM wireless has a recall issue, or a plant burns down, or literally anything to disrupt a single supply chain. Congrats, you now have 0 bikes to sell. I think wireless drivetrains are...

7/23/2024 10:20pm .. I'm pretty sure most of those people with all the coolest new stuff are all about the eebz these days. Based on the ratio of e bikes to pedal bikes I've been seeing lately, I just wonder how big the market even is for ~$10k pedal bikes anymore.

7/23/2024 8:06pm A few years back I switched to an open-source alternative to the Microsoft Office suite of products (Excel, Word, etc). Microsoft was moving to a subscription-only model, adding complexity and network connection requirements that didn't improve the actual user experience. Now, the more I hear about bullshit AI integration in future versions of Windows, the more I consider abandoning Microsoft altogether and taking the leap to a Linux-powered computer that does what I need and no more. I bring this up because I think there's a possible parallel to the mountain bike industry. We're seeing the major companies push features...

7/23/2024 7:51pm Oh yeah the bike companies absolutely know whats coming down the line.....but not all of it will be any good, so the smarter companies will only commit to the things which they know will become accepted as the "norm" in a few years. The counter to SC was Turner bikes who insisted the long travel RFX had front derailleur mount in 2016 because shimano was flogging a dead horse with their new front mech designs. See how well both of those turned out...Di2 and Fox live valve cabling were more things brands like Pivot jumped on board with early but...

7/23/2024 7:48pm My cheap chinese Bafang motor in a cheap carbon frame makes a 42 pound build, and the highest I've seen the reported watt output is about 580 watts. At 70 RPM this is 79nm. The current TQ maxes out at 250 watts (50nm), which is the same as one of my eco modes. Thats unacceptably weak, even for an SL bike. 250 watts paired with a 580 watt/hour battery gives you about two hours of climbing before you hit the low power/eco mode for the final 10-15% of battery. No one will ever use a mode lower than the maximum...

Snfoilhat Liked a forum topic Awards for bike race podium results
7/23/2024 7:36pm I'm guessing there are some riders reading the forums who help organize races and thought some might enjoy seeing these fun medals. I don't know the people behind the company (Stay Rad Awards) that does these, so I hope this comes across like sharing something new to me that I like about what someone's doing in cycling. The volunteers working the trophy table at these races seemed pretty delighted. As one of the many racers who are not in the league of giant novelty check / bottle of champagne on the podium kind of recognition for good results, I think...

7/22/2024 6:23am Isn’t it funny how this is a known issue yet nobody gives shit to Specialized for the amount of failures while other brands that have a few broken frames here and there ( that get replaced under warranty) takes shit for years and years?

7/18/2024 10:43am It is divine, even if folks don't agree with you. I'm gonna guess it's just gonna be another European location, the heavenly thing makes me think it'll be at a place named after a saint and there's thousands of places named after saints in the EU. UCI and potential venues don't seem keen to move outside of the EU anyways.

7/16/2024 12:27pm The popularity of social media and the need for new content (see also the daily news cycle) in the past 10 years or so has blurred the line for many between opinion and fact and has created comfy echo chambers for us lazy animals. Or somethign like that. Back to Ibis... it's commendable they tried to limit investment by reusing materials through the range, clearly the financial sting from the past few years is still there. But like what often happens, that middle ground is OK at everything and not great at any one thing.
