The extra ground clearance from using the shorter derailleur cage with the 9-45 cassette sounds worthy, especially if you have a 27.5" rear wheel. It's ironic that there's no 27.5" wheel offering🤷‍♂️.

The 500% range on the 9-45 cassette isn't a great fit for me, but if you're fitter or live somewhere flatter it might not need to be XC specific. The 9-11 tooth jump is a bit bigger than most but I think it's better to have the big jump at the high end than the low like on the non-T-type Sram 10-52.

Nope, but more reasonable that's for sure, remember the reaction to transmission pricing? I do, and I still think anyone paying MSRP or anything close to it aftermarket has more money then sense. And here we have another one of those products that don't make financial sense whatsoever. Especially in this day and age with bike brands/shops  going under at alarming rate. But that's just my opinion, if you have money to burn, it your business and whatever makes you happy.

Even so, there are certain things we know with Shimano.

They will not be doing a carbon crank.

They will not be doing 1 9t high gear on their cassettes. They don't even offer 10t to the roadies because of the inefficiencies and slippage.

Looking forward to quoting this post when it drops.

What was it you were going to quote again?

If nothing else it seems like an interesting branding move so close to the release of the 15

Where did you see this at?  I’ve got one with standard Genie and considering upgrading.

I have an ext Storia v4 on my stumpy 15. Never tried the genie but I can’t see it being as good as the ext. would recommend.

My favourite anecdote on the pricing that I tell people is that, 25 years ago in Eastern Europe, I paid 1K for a brand new Marzocchi Z1 Bam, which is exactly as much as I would pay for the current top of the line Zeb Ultimate.

And there is more to compare, but the point is, we are quite lucky actually compared to other areas in life where things have gone through the roof (housing,...).

It is not the cheapest sport, but what we can get these days for the money, the abuse it will withstand, and the fun you get back, I think the ratio is pretty awesome.

So is the shimano low viscosity oil something they produce or is it oem by some other manufacturer?

So, are we possibly getting the goldilocks wireless drivetrain in the 11sp XTR Di2 RD with XX1 toothy linky bits?

To anyone who hasn't read the article on the other site, it's about the mystery suspension run by the YT development team.

I think @sethimus and @iceman2058 were hinting at it on page 900 when we talked about the reel on vital's Instagram. Afaik the company is really based not too far away from Winterberg (130km). And to be fair, under the reel were one or two comments hinting in the same direction.

So maybe we now have the answer to all our guessing back on page 851...

After a 10 YEAR hiatus, Shimano is back in the electronic drivetrain space, this time without wires (thank god!). I've been riding the drivetrain and brakes since the beginning of December, 2024. Here's what I thought of everything -

0:00 - Di2 History
1:44 - Why it take 10 years to make new Di2?
2:48 - Derailleur & Shifter Switch Details
6:10 - New Crank Details
6:52 - New Cassette Details
7:27 - Derailleur Clutch and Design
12:04 - New XTR Brake Details
16:48 - Brake Lever Setup 18:36 - Shifter Switch Setup
22:21 - 150 Mile Test - Initial Impressions
33:39 - Final Thoughts - 6 Month Test
34:30 - XTR Brake Performance
40:20 - Shift Performance
42:46 - Component Wear
46:11 - Is it Loud??
48:08 - Weight and Price Breakdown
48:58 - The Bottom Line on XTR Di2

Really good video BTW. A little long for the world we live in, but this gave a lot of really good info. Appreciate the work

Anyone want to take a shot at explaining the lack of a clutch on the new shimano stuff?

So, any of those on Jack's bike?  I know he got a contract /w fox this year.  Would be weird for him to jump ship just after two races.

Completely not important but I feel the need to say that the etching of the knobs is pleasant. Gives me some De Tomaso super car dashboard vibes. IMG 6568 0.jpeg?VersionId=r

The article says that a 11sp linkglide version is coming soon, so I hope that isn't it.

I have a hunch these breaks are because electric derailleurs push harder than thumbs (I never broke a chain in this way with mechanical shifting). I imagine e-bikes are even more abusive than my puny wattage, e-bikes with electronic shifting might be a destructive combo.

I had this exact case on a GX Eagle chain in 2019. The only chain I broke in the last 20 years except for the one I used for 6 seasons on my primary bike when I was a broke student. Broke that one twice in two weeks, it was just gone.

Watched the video and I’m still unimpressed with the answer. Before posting here I read the other site’s article and didn’t like their answer either, especially after reading about chain slap being an issue.

My question was not about shimanos official line. I’m curious what we think about their decision, and if we believe their explanation (or if their explanation holds up.) I guess we won’t know until more people get o ride it.

I am aswell, we still have gx AXS kits available.
Same tech, similar speed and a no clutch proper clutch setup BUT Quite a bit cheaper, Currently you can Get GX axs for half the price of the XTR kit - whats the benefit of XTR?

I Feel they've gone for the "LOOK we have fast shifting" even though Sram had the same kinda thing 5 years ago.
I really like shimano drivetrains(other than the derailleurs breaking at the first blade of grass they hit)

I was expecting good things from shimano for their new Wireless drivetrain and new Brakes - But i've been quite disappointed in whats been released for both.
-late to the party
-lack of anything new
-shifts fast but thats it???
brakes
- still has their old feeling without wandering bite...
- new lever has... interesting design?
- caliper, new pad standard...(come on seriously???)

I hope XT comes with a clutch and Saint comes with a Proper new brake.

Otherwise i guess its carry on with supported brake brands like TRP, hope, sram(maven)  hayes etc
and the old reliable XT 12spd mechanical.

Who’s broken one already?

That point would be valid if axs mechs didn’t have such a high breakage rate too.

A faster and tuneable shifting speed is a great USP. Especially as their HG+ chain and cassette design can cope with it.

Whereas Srams just cannot, hence why they've made Transmission so slow.

Why is fast precise shifting a bad thing all of a sudden?

How new can a derailiuer be anyway!!

Now that mainstream Shimano hubs (previously HB-TC series hubs were also introduced with cartridge bearings, but they kind of stayed below the radar) are running on cartridge bearings would it be time to introduce Torque Cap adapters for the front hub?

I also expect that the XT and Deore series hubs will run on cartridge bearings. ?Given that SLX is doomed?

After all it is just a cylindrical parts made on a lathe with corresponding tolerance.

Also DT Swiss has a neat solution on using Torque Caps on Centerlock hubs, so that can not be a showstopper.
