He got half the DH world, including a lot of WC athletes, to try out flats for 2-5 years until we all collectively realized we weren't Sam Hill. Bryn, Gwin, Blenki, Wyn, Leov, and more all raced in flats during that era. Every few years I put on flats again for a few months and feel like I'm sickest at cornering until I realize I'm still very much not Sam Hill and I'm scared and actually going slower through all the rough bits.

They could have at least had the basic respect to respond to him.....Sam was most pissed about the fact he was completely ignored. Maybe we won't know which brands exactly they were, but I fully believe five ten wouldn't have the mtb market they do without Sam Hill - I'm not sure people these days realise how massive his influence was in making huge numbers of people change to flat pedals 20 years ago....

5.10 was acquired by adidas in 2011. With plenty of the core MTB related staff staying on. So you are cooked on that point. Whether Sam is a good investment for brands is definitely debatable, even when racing at his peak, he didn't actually ride that much. There's always two sides or more to any story, but Sam is a true icon. And his DH to Enduro transition (with huge succes) is so, so underrated.

He says in the interview that he disappeared for a few years because he felt stung by the industry. He's back riding now and seems to be enjoying himself.

Are you trying to tell us unskilled labour salaries in food industries have increased 20-40% since 2021? I'm sure the people in those industries would have a few things to say about that. I think the thing you are overlooking here is that motor/battery tech will continue to evolve which will keep the sales units moving, especially with enthusiasts. That coupled with the shorter life cycle of drive units and batteries and high cost to replace will make selling the old rig and buying a freshie feel like the smart move. Not excited about that part personally, feels like we're matching up to other consumer electronics with short replacement intervals.

100%. Got back into being a summer park fiend 4 years ago almost exactly as you described, ride park all summer during the weekends and would only do big trail rides in the winter. Spent 3 of those years building up a "parked" stumpy evo, cascade, coil F&R, 180mm zeb etc. Wasn't enough, bought a proper enduro bike rallied it hard enough to break it. Unless your DH bike is a marketing project to showcase the company and you don't care how many you sell (as you sell very few anyway) and you just want to make the best DH bike that you can for your WC team. Considering the sales numbers being thrown around for DH bikes over the years and considering what's happening with Enduro, long travel enduro bikes and long travel ebikes, I think it makes more sense to make a proper DH bike and have the next one in the lineup be something around 160 as far as non electric bikes...
