It's friday and that sounds like the perfect time to start a fight about wheel sizes again! Not exactly MTB, but Cube is supposedly dropping a 32" gravel in it's 2027 lineup. Saw this image floating around, first brand to commit to 30.5" ? Would hate to be an inventory manager right now...

Why not, instead of crank arms, make crank discs? Solid 304 stainless steel. You could put several holes in there, offset, so you can choose different “crank lengths” just by switching your pedals into different threaded holes. Adds weight, centered right around the bottom bracket. Ultimate bash guard as well! I should be an engineer. I’d succeed big time (or not).

Ironically Sram could sell a snap into tungsten insert and it would probably sell out. No idea how having that would be for the given volume but who cares right? Edit: Well I did not realize that the amount to fill that bottom bracket would probably weigh over 25 pounds so disregard that dumb idea haha

Wormholes are the ultimate French-line, imagine Rick losing his mind on the live broadcast when you come through a split 2 hours before your start time. I'm available as a technical consultant next season if any World Cup team managers are lurking this thread.

Am I the only one that thinks using a bike diaper to hide pretty basic suspension is kinda lame. I guess it gets the people talking though.

I should have specified that building between the Hope hub and the Oneup hub the 4mm would be lost in the noise. There are other factors at play with wheel systems one of which is the PCD, which hope has the leg up on with a larger PCD resulting in shorter spokes, which helps with the bracing angle and in general, shorter spokes = stiffer wheel. If you run the numbers between the oneup hub and the pro5 you gain 10% in lateral stiffness with less radial and torsional stiffness, ~3%. Overall wheel strength when looking at the combined metrics...

I know it can feel like the phone is listening to you but that would break a bunch of laws- actually what’s happening is your friend is interested in a topic, companies have mapped your social circle and know you both hit the same WiFi network/voluntarily gave them your location, so they can make a guess that you spoke about x thing that they’re in to. A lot of data driven marketing is about linking up data sets like this, arguably it’s more skeevy than directly listening to you but there we are.

I wonder what’s the smallest battery you could put in this thing to handle shifting and overcome drag without actually adding any assist. It’d be sick to have a 750Wh removable battery and a 50Wh integrated battery for travel/bike park/regular riding

This is my last post on this, I don't really want to derail anymore than I have, but I think you need to consider more than just the technical aspects here. There are issues with the technical stuff, but business and user experience are just as, if not more, important when you consider adoption of new innovations (any innovation, not just gearboxes). As a user, if I have a Pinion gearbox fail or need service, that means it has to be removed from the bike and replaced. Who is doing that? How long am I going to be out of...

There are some pretty tough engineering challenges that need to be overcome before gearboxes can find their way into mainstream pedal MTBs. They pretty much have to be fully enclosed, as lubricated gears at BB height would never survive otherwise. That's a lot of material to form that enclosure. Perhaps some use of really tough fiber-filled thermo-plastics could offset some of this weight, but the GB is also the bash guard, and there are a lot of internal stresses that the shell has to handle. Due to material properties of even the most exotic metals, the gears really can't get...
