so does the back brake really heat up that much? i'd think the front is where the real heat is (maybe there's a dripper there and we can't see it).

I would think the rear would heat up more than the front because of how you use them. Front brake hard and intermittent and rear brake is more constant for speed management, thus not allowing it to cool.

I’m surprised it gets that hot in 3 minutes but I guess it's super high intensity.

Yeah rear brakes can get absolutely cooked on a track like this, as even the pros will brake drag half the run. Because the corner speed at some points is quite slow after the shutes, they just need to get rid of that energy through the brakes. Front brakes you can't drag going down the steeps, as you'll just lose traction and miss the lines.

You can check on your bike if your overheating due to the disc discoloration.

It's why some pros go up and down rotor sizes/pad compounds to get the brakes at optimal temp, here overheating is an issue, for other tracks maintaining heat is an issue.

And for this reason why Troy often runs a 220mm rotor in the rear but a normal 200mm up front.  Rear brake is consistently "on" far more than the front.

Phil Atwill mentioned something similar on his sleeper podcast about a syringe that dripped water to his rear brake

They did mention it on the official broadcast that some teams were using a "dripper system" to help with rear brake temperature, so you guys were indeed correct!

Loic was running a larger rear rotor this weekend as well.

A lot of the quicker kids in Whistler been doing this for a few seasons. Haven't fully understood their explanations but I'm not exactly keeping up with them either 😁

The rear brake normally does at least as much work, if not quite a lot more than the front. Not many people are truly 50/50 if you look at something like brakeace data, so its normal for the rear to get hotter. You can often see its more common for rear rotors to be discoloured more than the front too

I feel that the larger rotor in the rear balances out the “bite”and makes it stronger.  If I run the 220 in front it find the initial bite pitches my fork too much and upsets the bike balance. The first rider I saw do this was Troy Brosnan

I seem to remember Martin Maes doing this a few years ago too?

I first encountered the idea in Enduro-MTB's (fairly persuasive) article about it.

Hello, does anyone knows if there will be a release of a new cannondale habit or santa cruz tallboy in a near future (we have seen ella and iago riding the new habit and it looks 110% production ready, and i think we also saw kiran riding the new tallboy in sea otter + there are some big blowout deals on both bikes online)

Wonder why they stopped testing the gen2 6-pots from several years ago when I’m watching how everyone testing the 6-pot Lewis brakes is raving about them…

Rumour was that Adam Brayton didn’t like them / get on with them, so they put them back on the shelf.
