Yeah this was super bizarre, although not that surprising given the platform. The review was pretty accurate but terrible timing when the new version has already been launched and addresses every one of those shortcomings! The problem is people are going to skim the article and think it’s referring to the new one, so it’s straight up terrible journalism. I don’t strictly mind reviews calling out a bad product, but if it’s not even remotely current then it’s either lazy content creation or they have an agenda

MTB forums/comments: Reviewers are industry schills, they never write anything bad about any products. Everyone knows that sucks/is unrideable/will fail and won't get warranty support. Also MTB forums/comments: This reviewer wrote something critical about a product I happen to like, they must be biased against that company. Total hatchet job man!

I've been down a whole bunch of rabbit holes looking at ways to apply compliant mechanisms to a suspension layout. Countless hours in linkage, numerous scientific papers read, and much daydreaming. The best optimization is where you can limit down the degree of movement needed or the distance travelled. The lower a bearing would rotate the higher it's probability for replacement with a flexure.

Some more fodder - I recently crossed paths professionally with an industry veteran who has done composite design and analysis for a bunch of bike companies (he still does it now), most of which you have definitely heard of. He and I nerded out about frame/layup tuning for a little while one day and what he communicated to me was that most of that tuning happens on road bikes. Frame loading is (insert my opinion now) better defined on the road side of things than it is on the MTB side of things, so engineering localized compliance into road frames...

Spot bikes has been dabbling in this for a while as well, they use a composite leaf spring instead of a second link/pivot in their full suspension design. I'm a composites guy professionally and i've spent a few years working at companies that make compliant composite mechanisms for space structures (fancy hinges and booms like daneb referred to). Based on my experience in that arena, as well as what I know about how bikes are currently designed, manufactured and the margins on their sale (used to work in a bike shop) i'd venture to say we are a ways out...

Seems like manufacturers are already dabbling in this arena. From flexy seat and chain stays to compliant carbon layups that are flexier in one direction than the other. I do wonder what the limits are though. Complaint mechanisms as my non-engineer brain understands them, are predominantly used as hinges in light or non-weight bearing systems.

Fork was sent in 2022, so likely a 2023 model. Oh gosh a year beyond release on a fork that’s still widely available to consumers, how utterly ridiculous for Seb to write about its shortcomings as a heavier rider. Who hurt you.

I'm certainly no patent expert, but it made me think... Could this Specialized UBB patent infringe on Knolly's 4x4? Obviously a different layout, but they're essentially the same: Horst link with a secondary linkage driving a shock.

I agree with your observations. Here's my latest creation. split High pivot pinion gearbox downduro bike. 210mm travel for 75mm stroke. around 120% anti-squat, 90% anti-rise, 25% progression. Next design will have a motor in it as I feel this analog one outside of small design details, is about perfect for my use with the current available components.

First rule of frame design, ignore marketing crap. Compare a whole bunch of different designs in Linkage and realize that everyone is slowly converging on the same thing. The window of preferred anti-squat and leverage ratios is narrowing in on roughly 100% anti-squat at sag and a LR of 20-25% linear progression starting around 2.8 to 3.0. Anti-rise seems to still be down to designer tastes or a compromise of the chosen linkage platform / shock location. The more time you spend in Linkage the more you realize everything has already been done...and thus why the window of optimized designs...

Wonderful how someone spends their time and effort making something and people shit on them. Good on ya for trying this! Looks cool. stupid question - do they compress at the same time, or with different impacts? Does the fork have to bottom out first then the linkage kicks in? Or does it kind of create an area/zone of suspension use, as opposed to linear travel? this concept was talk of the town years ago, when BCD made his two shock bike where each shock would activate based on different forces.

A new take on front suspension tech I am experimenting with which could be a simple bolt on conversion. Specs: Fox 36 140mm travel with custom one piece Upright/fork crown. Girder fork type link suspension with Fox DPS shock giving 53mm travel. 193mm total travel. This system gives the front wheel two different wheelpaths....the more vertical of the Telefork and a more rearwards wheelpath of the Link suspension....each seperately tunable. A more dynamic range of change for offset and trail. This adds a third level of suspension compliance ( first being the tire...then the Telefork..then the link suspension ). I...

My one piece of advice for most riders to make their bikes less tiring and more forgiving is to speed up your rebound. Most mountain bikers run their rebound way too slow because they want to make the bike feel stable and predictable in the car park, but that means the suspension isn't able to move freely on trail. If your rebound is too slow, especially on your fork, your suspension will pack down into the harder part of the spring curve and beat up your hands and legs. Find a rougher track and open your rebound 3 clicks on...

I know guys who say the exact opposite and your bars shouldn't be higher than your saddle. IMO its irrelevant and they shouldn't be compared. It is going to be affected by your specific combination of height, limb length, reach/stack and the relative proportions of each. I started bringing my bars higher a while ago, but I have proportionally long legs and arms so if I was to try bring them up above the seat it would mean siting bolt upright or stretching the front end out to a silly distance!
