Yeah I think it is a selling point that nobody ever really uses. I don't think more than a handfull of people across the world will be converting their rallon from enduro rig to a DH rig for a park weekend on an even semi-regular basis. Are people really going to get the different links, shock, fork, and maybe wheels/tires just for a couple of park weekends a year? And if you're actually going to a park more often I'd say its easier to just own a decent DH bike. IDK man. I'd say it's a way bigger win for...

34 vs 36 forks for your next trail bike? We thought this would be an interesting topic to explore, so we did: https://www.vitalmtb.com/videos/member/trail-bike-fork-selection-34-v-36.

I bought a used beat to shit Tazer for $2k. New bearings, swapped the DVO fork for a Z1 Coil. I think it had like 3K on the odometer. Still running somehow. If it dies, I doubt I will replace it unless something comes along for around the same price point. I buy used older stuff, so resale never crosses my mind.

Here is another app which basically skips many of the Strava paywalled features, but it runs on Docker so it might be a bit difficult for not tech savy users to install: https://statistics-for-strava-docs.robiningelbrecht.be/#

I just saw this thread, not sure how I missed it. Some of the things I would like to see (Sorry if they are already mentioned). -Strava private segments: I make them but I would like to be able to invite friends to the private segments. -Along the same lines, maybe some segments require and invite or you have to request to be part of it?? -I use Strava to track my maintenance. Always update the ride to make sure it is the bike I rode that day. I have to write it down (date & mileage) but maybe a...

I pushed the rock shox product manager to keep the 35mm Boxxer and update with a tapered steerer and 15mm axle for these bikes. Shot down.

Felt this was a fitting place to post my thoughts on running a Boxxer on a Spire. Spoiler Alert: Its the best setup I've run thus far. I genuinely don't understand why we don't see this more often, from ~160-170mm on up. Especially on e-bikes. I suppose price is part of it, but my real guess is what I'm going to call "mimesis"; we all broadly follow more than we lead. And breaking convention is hard.

About to replace a 180 Zeb on my Commencal meta SX (long shocked) with a 200 Boxxer. Will report how that works out… axel to crown looks roughly the same when side by side. I have a stumpy EVO that does 90% of my riding, this will be my gnarly trails/park/once a year DH race bike that I can still pedal if needed.

It made sense, as I can drop in the hardware from my Vitus now, and it's made it over 300g lighter even after adding a brake mount and shock mount. And then, I painted it

This will probably be best: The thing is that bolts are usually used to clamp down two parts in the axis of the bolt itself. By squeezing the two parts together, enough friction is generated to prevent any movement side to side so the bolt technically shouldn't be loaded at all. If a bolt is loaded perpendicularly to the stem, it's not tightened enough or the design isn't good enough. In general. With mtb pivots it's a bit different, I'm quite sure the bolts are used as the load carrying elements and sized appropriately so this part goes out the...

Is it a derailment of the thread if I mention how much I hate our patent system, both in the US and internationally? I've heard the pro-side of the arguement, but its aways presented as a given with no data. "But it helps the little guy" the vast majorities of patents are held by large firms, not small ones. "Patents protect you against predatory companies" it seems to me patents are wielded by companies who typically have more lawyers than engineers. "Patents are the only way to protect your ideas" patent law is enforced by judges who are not engineers...

The benefit of patents is that you can piledrive the opposition (regardless of whether it is someone holding the patent and you want to use it or you have the patent and someone else is using it) into the ground with enough money for either lawyers, to make a deal or both. The bigger the money difference is between the sides, the more driving the pile does. Patents in no way protect the little guy as the little guy does not have the finances to fight infringement. I've often heard it say to just innovate and be faster than the...

I'll send them a letter back telling them I look forward to cooperating with them when I intend to take the bike to market, which is never. If they want to get between me and my hobby I'm more than happy just ignoring them 😂

The disposable nature of Shimano brake components is a real head-scratcher and a bit of an anachronism in today's world. Is there anyone doing good quality rebuild kits that can be trusted? As for the colour of the fluid, I once bled a set of lower end Shimanos only because they hadn't been done for three years and a few thousand kilometres – they still worked fine otherwise. The fluid came out black but after the bleed they didn't feel noticeably different. It's possible the performance of the entire system was degraded, but they still felt fine and the visual...

We’ve reached a point where bike geometry is pretty dialed for most rider sizes. Reach and chainstay lengths adjust, and brands like Cannondale even implement size-specific kinematics. The next frontier in frame chassis design seems to be ensuring that both large and small riders experience the right frame compliance for their weight and, beyond that, that every rider has a bike that behaves to their preference. Some riders want to plow, others need the chatter to be calmed down, and some just want to pop and play and have an exhilarating ride on their local blue trail, like a track...

This has been the first flex stays frame I have built. Previously there have been three linkage driven single pivots and a classic single pivot. The rear end sits at neutral at 40% travel with the shock removed.

Flex is great... until it isn't. It seems to be this subtle thing that is largely ignored or not reacted to, until a big flex happens where the bike seems to "disappear" for moment, providing that "vague" feeling and possibly shaking confidence. Flex also seems to be something that is both structurally and input driven. So a minor flex on a mellow event can turn into a larger flex in a high load event. A couple of questions: - when talking roll and wag flex, how many millimeters: is a little, is a lot - For a consumer's bike, how...

Been experimenting with larger grips as opposed to smaller ones and notice they’re easier to grip as OD increases. I have smaller than average hands so I have doubts we’re really addressing this problem correctly.
