1/18/2024 8:55am Richie looks to be on Magic Mary on the bike rolling photo. Bike laid down photo harder to make out with the mud, but it's Sharpied out, so not Maxxis. The prototype Maxxis tire many people have posted is a new tire (or updated Shorty III) that is meant to compete with the Continental Argotal, current gen Hillbilly & WTB Verdict. Those 2:2:2 knob pattern tires all have more 'land' (knob size) vis sea (open space) than the Shorty2. Which makes them more predictable on rocks/roots. This is one of the reason Loic ran the Argotals at Snowshoe this year...

1/17/2024 9:18am Pretty sure that's a Magic Mary, if you zoom on the riding photo it looks like pattern of 3 knobs across the carcass followed by 3 sets of 2 knobs before repeating

1/17/2024 7:22am Bar height is an underrated fork setup step if hunting for midstroke. I also found a frame with higher anti rise also helps the ride height/midstroke equation.

1/15/2024 9:36am I agree that more damping, less spring is a better end solution. After getting a tuned Grip 2 I dropped 10psi from my setup. I've got an Ohlins rear shock on one bike and a Manitou on another. Both are more heavily damped than the fox shocks they replaced. The only downside to Ohlins rear shocks is the inability to do a basic air can service without fully opening the shock.

1/15/2024 9:24am My understanding is that major tuning for both forks and shocks is done ahead of time with the teams and riders. This allows much more time for testing. That way riders are just making small changes to fine tune for each track. I don't think there is time for major changes at every WC race.

1/14/2024 9:56pm I’ve never tried the same shock on low and high pivot. I was just thinking that if the shafts speeds were naturally higher on low pivot, you’d need a stiffer tune to contain that and lower the speeds to something acceptable. But I’ve never done my own shims, so not sure!

1/14/2024 7:07pm The compression tune for the low pivot bike would be less stiff than on the high pivot bike, wouldn’t it? Because the high pivot bike has lower shaft speeds at the shock and therefore requires more damping to get similar control of wheel/axle speeds? I understood Steve’s comment of using the low pivot bike (and one with moderate progression) for...

1/12/2024 8:27pm Just so they know and to encourage them if they're reading this, when they come out with the Kryptotal front in Enduro casing Supersoft, I'm buying a pallet. Maybe two if they also do the Trail casing in Supersoft.

1/10/2024 5:30pm FYI, just listened to the Blister podcast about the Vorsprung shock and Steve mentioned that testing a shock on a HP bike will make for a bad shock on normal pivot bikes as shaft speeds on square edge hits are too low on HP bikes to develop the shock correctly. It could be read as if it is a band aid, but damn that's an expensive band aid development wise and marketing wise...

1/10/2024 12:41pm What’s their opinion on aliens?? Jokes aside, if it’s a “bandaid” for bad shocks, does that make it superior compared to a non-high pivot bikes if both have a custom tuned shock? Or is the performance benefit they have only applicable to poor damping and drops off/stays the same as damping improves? Because how I interpret that comment is that...

1/10/2024 12:30pm Suspension is then a band aid for crappy riding technique and stiff legs... A high pivot has a very specific set of advantages and disadvantages. If it's a "band aid" for anything it the lack of rearwardness in the axle path that comes from axle height on modern 29 and 27 inch bikes compared to older 26 inchers.

1/8/2024 7:30pm This is really interesting because it lines up pretty well with what Nico talks about in his PB podcast with axle paths. Thank you for sharing.
