ThomDawson Added a comment about press release Cotic Launches 2020 FlareMAX 29er Trail Bike

This a trail bike man. The biggest isn’t always the best. If you want to pedal a super steep seat angle on a 125mm trail bike that goes for miles on flatter terrain and not just uphill there are plenty of brands that will sell you one. Cotic could have just maxed out the numbers to stay ahead of the trend but they chose a more considered approach. Wait for the reviews, the more rounded bikes are the ones that take it in the trail category. I’m glad there are brands that still have some identity in their design philosophy...

Bought a Freerider in 2016 and it was working nice until last month now the inside of the sole is taking of, bought this Hellcat this year and the sole take of all over in only 3 months was so disapointed that I will never buy Fiveten again, no customer service.

I’ve been using Freeriders for as long as I remember. Tonnes of grip in all conditions. But you’d better not take em on a wet ride (haven’t tried the Pros) and they last approximately 5 mins before the pedals punch holes through the sole so water will begin to get in through the bottom eventually. Finally had enough of paying out for 5 10s and having damp feet.

I really enjoyed the video. Coworkers and other people frequently ask me what they should get and I never know what to recommend. This will be a good resource for those situations. Also makes me reflect a little on how spoiled I've become with having to have perfect everything and chasing that. I still love riding but perhaps times were simpler (and maybe better?) when I could only afford a $1,200 bike and hand-me-down tires.

What is it that makes a bike fun? What do we require it be capable of? What boxes must it check? Pedaling, pumping, jumping, climbing, descending? Surviving, encouraging, enjoying? The list could be a mile long and will vary from bike to bike and rider to rider. Hopping on the Transition Scout, a mid-travel trail/all-mountain bike with Transition's Speed Balanced Geometry (SBG) and GiddyUp 2.0HH suspension, we expect some fun will be had. Will it check all our boxes though? Strengths Weaknesses Great cornering feel and performance Quieting yet lively over chunky descents Doesn't lose much speed or hang up...

I’ve been riding one of these for the latter part of this year. I was a massive fan of the OG Scout and been waiting to get on this iteration for a while. I pretty much agree with everything said here but I think 4/5 stars is generous. To be honest I think this thing is too slack and too heavy to be a good trail bike - better just buy a Patrol as it’s no heavier. It’s lost a lot of that snappy feel all good trail bikes should have. There are annoying niggles as mentioned (hey Transition you...

I do get what you are saying, for sure. I just added a Trek Top Fuel (2020) to my garage along with a new Enduro. Guess which bike is more fun on most of the trails I ride? Yup, the XCish one. I can load the bike so much easier on the tiniest of trail features and absolutely smash corners (well, as much as I can smash anyway). Its fun to be able to throw a bike around. But it also gets overwhelmed on the more legit DH stuff (very very quickly). By far one of my favorite bikes was...

@teamrobot isn't wrong. Robots are never wrong. What you are describing however isn't new, nor is it isolated to mountain biking. I have zero idea what the number is but my two cents worth of a guess is 95% of all the shit marketed to dudes never gets used near to its potential nor heritage by which it was produced. Dirt bikes. Mountain bikes. Snowmobiles. UTVs. Fast cars. Powertools. You name it. Most guys buy shit and come nowhere near using it to the degree it was engineered. I remember bumping into a really fast enduro rider before enduro was...

He's just a salesman.. his tactic is to get the consumer to question what they already have by pretending to be the 'expert'.

I don’t disagree with ya man. I truly do appreciate Chris’ influence and everything he’s done for mountain bikes. And you’re right of course he’s looking at bikes in a different way to me although I did spend a good part of this decade hangin on everything he did, rode some pretty big bikes myself and had a blast. But my path turned away from the Darkside. And now I ride a transition scout with a bmx seat and the suspension locked out :D

I really appreciate Chris’s out of the box thinking and the input and influence he’s had on bike design over the last decade is impressive and welcome. But he’s not always right and I think too heavily influenced himself by motorbikes at (all) times. If I wanna go ride in the woods with my mates (as he says in the interview) I’m not looking for a motorbike without an engine, I don’t want the slackest, longest or even the fastest bike. I’m looking for something simple, familiar and consistent and easy to throw about. People started making longer bikes and...

Great bike for a little shredder. On a side note, interesting how the frame only option is 1k, while the sentinel or adult bikes are double the prices. Obviously a little shock upgrade, and more material, but a 1k increase is crazy.

I would like to see more breathable 3/4 helmets that have that trials motorcycle helmets style. I cut out the chin from an old Scott Spartan helmet. It is my favorite helmet I have though I wish it was more breathable so I could run it in summer for climbing.

Rather have a chin bar, preferably one with an open mouth port so I can actually breathe without restriction, and one that's tougher than the Proframe and Stage's.
