Sam Hill may have been one of the first to start going wider with his bars back in the day, but he stopped well short of today's 780/800 "standard". He usually runs 750 or so, which probably makes his bars among the shortest of all the pros today.

Agreed with @sspomer - there is limited space to build, and I've judged similar competition formats once upon a time in the big mountain freeskiing realm... My thoughts: If you built it, you should know every inch of it better than someone 'poaching' it, thus you have no excuse not to ride it better and score better. If a few people ride the same exact line, the one who rode it better should score better, this is a judged competition. Of course there are politics involved, but this is the basis of a judged event. If you can't handle it...

I'd agree with your friend, Primoz. That's certainly what I've found. My old 2012 Mega was one of the best climbers I've had, think that one was 74 or 75. I now try and find bikes as close as I can to 75° because it was that easy. I also had a 2013 Mega which was 72° and it was awful by comparison on the climbs. I always ride with the seat slammed forward no matter what SA so I reckon I could go steeper still...

El Viejo, totally agree dude. Also think you're right Primoz - 72° appears to be the virtual/ effective angle. And on the dropper thing too. Glad to see I wasn't the only one thinking 72° a bit slack.

Ok, I concede I was exaggerating slightly. It is a bit longer than the short bikes of yesteryear. Still with longer and longer bikes being made I think a claim of a super long reach on this is also an exaggeration. I find it odd that they're pretty specific on the chart (c-c, c-t, etc) but the SA fails to mention whether virtual or actual and give measurements for both. Anyway, in case it's not obvious, I'm disappointed!

Been waiting a long time to see this. But...the reach isn't "super long" it's medium. The top tube is super long...because the seat angle is 72°, which is pretty slack these days and harder to climb than steeper SA IMO. So when you're sat down you're stretched out, then you stand up and you really are stood up...like an xc hard tail. As usual, not sure what took em so long tbh.
