You’re not the first to assert Leaf is winning in spite of the gearbox… instead of wondering if the benefits to unsprung mass might outweigh the loss of efficiency. Is it that hard to believe Lief might prefer the Vanth? Last I heard he demoed the bike before signing with Priority. I would also add, after spending most of my last rides thinking specifically about my tires feel, subtelties in conditions, rider's energy and mindset can change how a tire feels. For example, using the gen 1 Schwalbe Albert Gravity 2.5 US front/rear, mostly dry rides. Early in the season, not in the best shape, I was cautious but gaining confidence in the tires. I settled on the best pressure after 5-6 rides and just enjoyed them afterwards. Then I reached one ride where I was tired and the tires seemed skittish and less predictable. The ride after, they felt great...

Yeah, I can't tell how much of the hype around the DHX as a "dry conditions tire" (whatever that means) is an accurate description of its performance window vs. talking points from Maxxis to create clear product differentiation within their lineup. Mammoth is dry, but it's so dry you want to run HR3's or full mud spikes. So what does "dry conditions" even mean? I'm excited to try this tire at some point, because I live in the land of actual dry conditions year round. Can't tell if this will be a front Assegai replacement for me, a front HR3...

The nighttain has a 20T for the larger of the jackshaft rings, not sure about the smaller, and a 27T chainring. A chain link rotates 11.25 degrees (22.5 total) going onto and off a 16T idler and 9 degrees going onto a 20T ring. Add in the fact that there are two rings on the jackshaft and that's at least 18 degrees total. A little more because one of the rings is smaller by the looks of it. Then the smaller chainring is a little less efficient than a 32T. Maybe if you compare it to a bike that uses...

Yeah sorry not sure what happened there, but a more "tightly" wound spring would be softer - if there is more wire in the spring between the 2 end coils, imagine that stretched out to a straight bar and try to bend them by holding the ends. A longer bar of the same diameter wire would be easier to bend, so makes for a softer spring

If one spring is heavier because it is made from a longer section of wire it will have a softer rate, but if it is a thicker gauge of wire the same length then it will be stiffer. In reality it will be tough to make any kind of call as to which is stiffer, if its enough to make a difference you will notice it when riding. You could try measuring the diameter of wire (to around 0.05mm or better as well) and if they are the same, eyeball the start and stop of the coils at each end...

Name goes back some 15-20 years ago when first proper tubeless components were introduced (tubeless ready tires, tubeless wheelsets like mavic demax, which are not drilled throught etc) but a lot of us scrubs couldnt afford those and sealants were not as good as they are today so if not using proper parts the setup most likely wouldnt hold air and a ghetto setup was invented by cutting a 20" innertube and streching it over a rim and then mounting a tire, so the cut innertube would rest between the tire and the rim effectively sealing it. One thing that's desirable about the Foes method pictured here is that when the progression comes from the spring instead of from the leverage rate, it doesn't spike or slow the shaft speed at various positions in the shock travel, which can adversely change the damping feel at various points in the travel. One downside is that it's a whole mess of springs you need to have on hand to sort through until you find your desired ride height and suspension feel. In the case of this Foes they're also expensive titanium springs. My suspicion is that 99% of riders...

I know it can feel like the phone is listening to you but that would break a bunch of laws- actually what’s happening is your friend is interested in a topic, companies have mapped your social circle and know you both hit the same WiFi network/voluntarily gave them your location, so they can make a guess that you spoke about x thing that they’re in to. A lot of data driven marketing is about linking up data sets like this, arguably it’s more skeevy than directly listening to you but there we are.

I love that you think gearboxes will become ubiquitous on ebikes and will entirely replace mechanical derailleurs and electronic battery-powered derailleurs and electronic hard-wired derailleurs and autoshift derailleurs and internally geared hubs, instead of becoming one more option among a confusing sea of options and pricepoints, like everything else in the bike industry. I’m just guessing here, but it’s possibly the same way they did it for the Pro 4. End result is wider flange that overhangs their standard hg driver. That’s how a lot of shimano 7 speed dh setups were done 10 years ago.
