Goupil Added a reply to Tweener: make a small bike big, or a big bike small
2/20/2026 11:53pm The trail bike thread next door has me looking at a few bikes again (Optic, Spur), and with my 177cm / something like 5'10" I once again can't make up my mind on what size I'd want... Ended up sizing down to an M on my Propain Tyee and I like it that way, but some brands M bikes are...

2/20/2026 2:09am I’m not attempting to be a hater, but I think the “move out of the way” thing is a moot point when it comes to DH drivetrains. There are merits to the overall size of transmission and its ability to move out of the way, but I think it’s a problem that doesn’t exist with super short cage DH setups. SRAM has every right to sell AXYS DH transmission but unless you’re independently wealthy and just like expensive shit there’s zero reason to buy it. And props to those guys that do I guess? They are pumping money into the...

2/19/2026 3:15am My.hardtail has 4 long bars of metal making the rear end, so I'd say it is a 4 bar

2/19/2026 3:13am Personally I don't bother with 4 bars. I just find one good one with cheap jugs and stay there until it's time to go home. If they serve crab then it's definitely a bonus. Gotta get messy when you're getting messy.

2/12/2026 12:32am Woops I grabbed the first pic that looked like it in my galery 😅 I tested the idea on a 34 Rythm I had laying around but never rode it (29" fork on 26er look a bit daft), that must be what the one pictured is

2/12/2026 12:27am 3D printed out of PETG with a good infill, been in there for over a year, hasnt failed yet. Ride wise it does feel a bit funky at top out, I wouldnt put it on anything but a dirtjumper, my setup tend to be high pressure fast-ish rebound as I mostly ride asphalt pumptracks. I'll see if I can record...

2/11/2026 2:12pm I've got very little DJ skills and the fork is only there to save me when casing jumps, so I've gone for the jank but easy way of putting a spacer on the airshaft of a longer travel fork (35mm 27.5" Revelation I got for a hundred bucks used). Works OK, and I've got a strong sub 2000g fork for...

2/11/2026 5:03am Ah yes, the periodic table of continental tire skus. If there ever was evidence of how impossible it is to keep mtb consumers happy, it's the list of tire mfg skus.

2/4/2026 2:58pm Yeah, this is definitely something that I have thought about quite a bit lately. The fact that it often costs more to service a mountain bike than a car... Since realistically the major costs involved are labour costs, which are likely to be similar to that of a car workshop. For the average joe, who has either just gotten into riding, and doesn't want to know the first thing about fixing bikes, this is a major problem. It is very difficult to see the value in spending $1000 getting your $4000 bike serviced, when your $70,000 Ute costs you $350...

2/4/2026 2:02am At the end of the day, these sorts of bikes are made for the benefit of the manufacturer, and not as an innovative way to bring value to consumer. Having one frame to cover nearly your entire MTB catalogue is an awesome way to save money during this slump. I think it is important to remember that the average MTB buyer isn't hanging out on the vital forums, and they are likely not even be aware that the Trek Fuel EX they are about to buy can be converted to two other variations. I am not mad at certain brands...

2/4/2026 1:52am Glad that info was helpful! Yeah, regarding cutting bars leading to increased stiffness, Race Face said that their testing showed a 24% increase when cutting an 800mm down to 760mm. I also saw that Merida did testing that showed about a 10% increase in stiffness for every 20mm reduction in width, which works out to be pretty close to the RF figures. Given that, it seems like it should be relatively easy to extrapolate how stiff a given cut-down bar like the ProTaper will be vs. a model from a different company that offers a "native" 760mm width, assuming the...

1/31/2026 8:46pm The pendulum swings both ways. Once every one has migrated to a crab layout, you'll find brands that are happy to stand out with non-crab layouts. The majority of e-MTB designs, due to the motor placement, are migrating to crab designs and it's getting quite stale out there for industrial designs, kinematic designs, etc. Hard to standout and offer a USP when your story is the same as every one else. I'm not saying that we need bikes like the Polygon Square One or something from Scott that adds a ton of end-user complication, but I get much more excited...
