Creating this topic so we can nerd out about MTB drivetrains in typical Vital fashion. I will start this off by discussing the latest one: SRAM Transmission Mechanical vs AXS and my thoughts and observations on it. When SRAM first released their Transmission, there was a common misconception that you need electromechanical shifting (AXS) in order to get the perfect shift. People thought there is some sort of "chip" in the cassette that lets the AXS derailleur know when to shift safely. In reality, all the magic is in the cassette with the narrow wide profiles and predefined shift gates...

Silca is not releasing it;s newest product (mini-inflator) in the US due to tariffs: https://escapecollective.com/silca-elettrico-pumps/ Lots of good insight, and I thought this breakdown was really helpful "Ideal world: COGS: $42 Shipping: ~$2 Import Duties/Paperwork fees ~13%: $5.46 'Landed COGS': $49.46 Price to bike shop: $90/ Silca Gross Profit: $40.54 / 45% Retail: $149 / Bike Shop Gross Profit: $59 / 40% With Trump 45 Tariff on Chinese-made goods (2018): COGS: $42 Shipping: ~$2 Import Duties/Paperwork fees ~13%: $5.46 25% Trump 45 Tariff: $10.50 'Landed COGS': $59.96 Price to bike shop: $98/ Silca Gross Profit: $40.05 / 38.8% (42-45% is...

There is a difference between trade restriction like European countries not selling fish to Russia and import duties (tariffs, custom taxes whatever you wanna call it). With trade restrictions, yes second market are used to avoid such restrictions. In the case you mentioned, Belarus could buy the fish from Europe and then resell it to Russia since Belarus doesn't have the trade restrictions with Russia. This is also how Iran purchase most of their restricted goods through second market. China is doing the same currently with NVIDIA AI GPU. With import duties, trades of good is not restricted just costlier...

I'm aware, and have an understanding that 90% or more of riders have no business touching high speed compression or rebound knobs. There are many suspension company's making fantastic stuff for cheap. Suntour, Rockshox, Marzocchi and X-fusion all knock it out of the park with close to $500 suspension products for every day riders from XC to freeride. I love my Z1 and rarely do I find it unable to keep up to my 38 Factory while it does double duty on a hardtail on the same trails. And the Domain has been a reliable smasher of a park and...

Hi y'all, Longtime reader, though I rarely post. Some context I run a small non-bike company in Sheridan, WY. We make a ton in house, import a little, and outsource a bunch to other companies in the US. We do about 40% of our sales in Canada. These tariffs will put the brakes on the entire economy. My business is well positioned to make 100% of our product in the US, which would seemingly be a boon for us. But who is going to be able to buy it? Will our customers in Canada want to buy our products at...

Currently looking at getting a Propain Hugene, the spring sale from Propain (30% off) makes used bikes almost as expensive as a new one... Had no issues selling cheap frames recently (under 150€ hardtails, was trying to clear up space more than make money), but nothing except a hard lowball for a Polygon Siskiu T8 frame with shock and fork...

The other interesting part I don't see discussed often is that aluminium does not have a fatigue limit. The wording of that is slightly confusing if you don't know what it means, but essentially aluminium will eventually always fail from stress cycling at any stress level after enough cycles. Steel has a limit, where as long as the stress is below it's fatigue limit, it will not fail no matter how many cycles. It takes quite a while, but generally aluminium cracks around the 500 million cycle mark, at least that's what airframe engineers assume. If your a boat person...

Ryan Burney Liked a reply to forum topic Can You Fine-Tune Frame Stiffness With Just Bolt-On Bridges?

The shape of the rear triangle has a big impact on stiffness. The most efficient design is one with a large, well-defined triangle, like what you see on a road bike. It works like a truss bridge, where tall supports on the sides make the structure stronger without just making the base thicker. Adding more material at the base would make it heavier without adding much strength. A well-designed rear triangle keeps the bike stiff and efficient without unnecessary weight. Frame and pivot layout also play a huge role in stiffness, making things more complex. The main takeaway is this...
