Hello! I admit I have seen the ”Shimano Reports Bike Maintenance a Hidden Barrier to Participation” title on the home page and I got curious. I didn't read the entire thing, nor did I read all the comments here, as I don't have time right now (but I will make some time to read), so excuse me, but I feel the urge to say something. From my understanding, Shimano is whining that in Europe people are cycling less, because bike maintenance is hindering them. Did I understand right? If yes, than I find Shimano to be at least a bit...

Kirk from Norco riding something here - looks like low pivot Norco. Could be a Fluid... chainstay protector is different however.

I think it’s interesting to witness the rate of convergence in XC bikes nowadays. Most models from most manufacturers seem to be getting conceptually closer and closer to the design of the 2021 Specialized Epic Evo 7 with each iteration or update. The faux crab thing is real.

A flip chip plus a swappable/adjustable dropout (or some other chainstay lengthening method) is "the answer" to a lot of people's questions. Brian Chainstayhill and others can have their long chainstays and Santa Cruz can reduce the number of different triangles they need to make. I think Pivot has a proprietary dropout that allows for length tweaks. I wonder if there's a way to engineer a similar approach without infringing on the design...I'd bet there is but I don't really know anything about that stuff nor have I looked at any filings.

We shouldn't really be surprised, I would say the vast majority of bike companies are mostly just marketing companies, not manufacturing, engineering or financial companies. So when a buyer comes along, they're going to do what they do best.

I keep on thinking I should subscribe.. how "road" is it vs these sort of articles (that I would totally pay for). The recent velo shenanigans have only added to that line of thinking.

Wish I could read the whole article. Thanks for the link. It's still staggering just how many people though people would buy 2x the amount of bicycles per year indefinitely during the COVID boom, and purchase rate wouldn't return to the long run average.

If any of those 2021/22 bike industry investors are looking to recover after getting crushed from the post-Covid sales slump, I have some mixed use commercial and residential properties that I'm putting on the market. **and yes Jeff, I realize this prop/facade joke isn't a fair apples-to-apples comparison for bike company valuations in 2021, like Rad Power estimated at $1.65 billion. But in hindsight... it sure feels like this.

It would be a total tragedy because we're finally in this utopia where you can have a quiver with totally mixed genre mtbs and be able to grab a wheel from any one in a pinch. (RaceFace or Hope hubs for 20mm conversion, tons of DH bikes now 148). I really don't plan to give that up even if the gains are more than marginal. At the end of the day it's all about no missed rides for me.

I think it’s interesting Reece is pushing all of the novel ideas now, but when he was winning races he was on a typical cockpit setup.

That guy continues to strive for the asshole of the year award. Any validity of his opinion has been removed by that kneepad/short gap and that’s even before we talk about his “low IQ” dismissal of everyone who dares to disagree with him 😂

iceman2058 Liked a product review Affordable Excellence: EXT Vecta Coil Shock Tested

1/26/2026 5:04am
We’ve been testing EXT products for quite a few years by now, and we’ve always been impressed by their performance and “trail feel”. There were of course teething problems with some of the early versions, like the overly harsh tunes and air spring setups of the first ERA forks or noisy, clunky rebounds on the first generations of the Storia shocks. EXT has learned a lot since those days, and the current crop of products is nothing short of excellent. When the company launched the Vecta, they stated that it was built by “recycling” some aspects of previous designs...
