Not quite a tech rumour but I noticed top 5 men at EDR worlds are supported by Fox and are all on 38's not podiums. Rider preference or Fox shelving that project?

Probably don’t want to carry unnecessary weight (400gr) around given the race bikes are already heavy af in such a long and physical race

Alex Rudeau rode a Fox 36 to 5th place. He stated on a YouTube bike check that weight was the main reason.

I would be surprised, heard Spec isn’t out of the woods yet financially with the bike recession. If they were launching in the spring, they would have had to lock in production specs already, proto molds would already be done testing. Maybe possible they do a link like the they did on the Levo?

Having to cut Levo retail prices by ~30%, can’t be helping, they sell about 30k of those a year.  Hearing long travel bike sales are getting cannibalize by eMTB.

They had a new one pretty much ready to go back in '22, but that got shot down by the marketing team for not being "different enough"

A few things:

New bike coming from mondraker as per their insta page.

Two Spesh riders at the finale race rocking Maxxis tires when previously they have always been on Spesh tires. Notably Jamieson and Brodie.

Hard to tell exactly but it’s a zendit with aluminum rear end. Possibly a lower tier specced zendit

This started happening quickly after the Podium release, they were all on them for a round or two then started dropping off. After riding one my guess is they don't like the old twist and tuck

wonder if its going to be a noodle like the v5. I hated that bike, flexed alot in the rear, the SX version I got to ride was better with the seatstay brace

I can’t help but always think of the Jamis hardline when I see the meta with a lower link in the front triangle.

Not sure if anyone here cares but here is another mostly shameless promotion.

Confirming we are moving forward with our own bike as well as the Eden. Both US made. The Bolt (named after my dog), is our bike and will use the Gobao e-CVT motor. Same form factor as our Eden so fully adjustable travel from 158mm to 199mm depending on shock length and stroke. Keeping the same geo as our Eden as well.

https://www.vitalmtb.com/videos/member/rumors-confirmed

We are working hard to get the web site updated with all the info for the three bikes (spRocket, Eden and Bolt) as well as a bunch of fresh merch.

We are expecting to have Bolt bikes ready to ship by SeaOtter (more of a timing issue with Gobao than with us this time). We will be running Bolt parts along side parts for the Eden starting this month so we will have a supply of them ready to go come spring when Gobao has units in stock.

Not so much a rumour but I was browsing Aliexpress and in amongst the Nicolas Cage cushions and black latex gloves for your feet, dirt cheap t̶u̶n̶e̶d̶ mass dampers for mountain bikes have already begun to show up. The listings imply they contain real springs and masses, i.e. they aren't just selling you a section of solid bar. The reviews however suggest they still have a lot of work to do before they're functional. Some of them are even made from CFRP tubing (presumably the stuff stem spacers are cut from?) and are shown mounted to "serious" bikes.

I'm sure this is an omen of something but I can't decide what.

About the new meta, is there any reason to to this dumb caliper positioning other being annoying to work on?

Like, is there a construction reason that makes the bike better vs calipers on top?

From what I've seen it also makes the frame wider as it has to go around the caliper.

Piece de resistance, there's a Cube frame I saw last week that's Horst link and has this orientation of the caliper. The caliper mount was actually extended past the pivot to make a very convoluted chainstay and axle/caliper mount forgings.

Atleast the pad retaining bolt isn't blocked by the seatstay so you can still change pads without fully removing the caliper unlike many flexstay xc/dc bike. The bleed port is blocked for this meta v6 but ideally you would remove the caliper anyway when bleeding.

I have heard more upside-down forks are coming. Nothing getting shelved. Fox may have found out that there is a significant portion of the market that wants and will buy the newest, flashiest, most expensive option, even if their racers prefer something else.

It's for strength. That position distributes the forces from braking through the seat stay and chainstay better than being on two posts above the seatstay, but it is awful to work on.

I was chatting to Alex Rudeau at Transmadeira about it and he claimed that positioning the brake like that improved braking characteristics, specifically that the rotor was pushing the rear triangle down instead of sideways and offering more grip... Not sure how that works since the rear triangle is a unified structure and I assume it would be subject to the same anti-rise characteristics regardless of brake placement? Any engineering (or marketing) professionals here?

It doesn't work that way. The only thing that matters is the braking torque and the effects on the suspension which is what antirise is.

For a unified rear triangle, moving the caliper does not affect kinematics at all. It is applying a moment to the rotor and a reaction to the rear triangle. The center of this moment is exactly the rear axle, which is also the location about which you would rotate the caliper if you were to relocate it, causing no effect.

The only difference I can think of would be stiffness characteristics, whereby moving it allows the designers to make one member where the caliper is attached stiffer, and make the other member less stiff in the same plane. This may allow more or less twisting in the roll axis, either creating more grip on off cambers or more precision in compressions. This is completely related to stiffness though, not braking characteristics.

Frames flex and twist from braking torque more than you think. I've had to deal with this on my ti single pivots.

Go find your old GoPro from the electronics drawer in your kitchen, charge it up for the first time in years, and mount it to your left side seatstay, pointed at the brake caliper and go for a ride. You'll see more flex than you'd expect. I imagine that for Pro racers, this does affect braking performance.

I've heard rumours that it's geared more towards being a playful, park/freeride bike, but NSB will make a different link for racing in the future. Also, 500/506 reach and 450/456 chainstay (in an XL) and pricing between $8-9000cdn (if I remember correctly). I think there is only one build option.

With that geo it’s not a freeride bike at all lmao

They already have the chainsaw as the freeride/park bike I don’t think they would kill that off already.

Yeah, Magnus had it at the Canadian nationals. Laurie has had one for a while too.

E-dread front triangle with a custom link and chainstay. The motor/battery is removed and an adjustable position bb is there instead.

I was dying to take a pull on that prototype at the nats, I suspect it's going to be very good indeed, based on the fact that my e-dread was running the same times down the course as my supernought was. Also exciting that there could be an e-supernought, or link package for the e-dread, in the works.

I haven't heard anything about them killing off the Chainsaw. Just heard that the Wilson will be a playful bike with a racier link available in the future.

And I guess playful is what you make of it. Obviously not a direct comparison, but my Madonna has the same kinda reach/chainstay numbers and while it's super planted and wants to go fast, it loves to jump and jib all over the place.
