Hello Vital MTB Visitor,
We’re conducting a survey and would appreciate your input. Your answers will help Vital and the MTB industry better understand what riders like you want. Survey results will be used to recognize top brands. Make your voice heard!
Five lucky people will be selected at random to win a Vital MTB t-shirt.
Thanks in advance,
The Vital MTB Crew
I give people a hard time. They give me a hard time. Guy stuff.
No trigger warnings. Just nonsense good times.
I lack emoji utility to soften the sillyness.
Bikes at Wide Open Distributers which sell/distribute GoodYear - https://www.wideopen.co.nz/
was just sent this by rogue racing TM, not sure if old news. rogue and GT this year
I don't know current salary structure but even over a decade ago in slalom's prime, a buddy was offered $30k yr from Iron Horse to race Dual Slalom for a year and free equipment. He turned it down b/c they HAD to run GripShift. Sram had no thumb shifters.
It was a good move on his part. Seems happy these days and still involved in the industry & got to avoid a possible Wade Bootes administrated first turn collarbone take out or three.
I imagine neko is paying his staff well. But some world cup teams still pay staff peanuts. With weird mixes of day rates, product, bikes etc... it's pretty low brow as far as I know
This deserves its own thread, but unless you are looking at the contract first hand, take everything with a grain of salt. I've negotiated on behalf of a handful of professional athletes in adjacent sports as an "agent" (LOL) and I've also watched people flat lie about what they were making to feel better about themselves. I get it. Its a topic riddled with insecurity.
While I'd wager there are more athletes making $100-200K+ than most think (I'm including influencer types and freeriders in this), its a terrible career choice in every sense of the word "choice".
If I was a dad, and my kid showed any less promise than Asa or a young Keegan/Vali, I'd make it very clear how unlikely it was he/she is to ever make a real living doing anything in the sport as a racer. Remember, your net worth as a racer is getting pitted against all sorts of other advertising and marketing instruments. That's not a fight I'd want to wage in 2024. This doesn't mean don't race, it just means everyone should be eyes wide open as to what you are really worth. This isn't NIL NCAA, and we should treat it appropriately as mentors/uncles/coaches/parents.
The good news is there are a bazillion awesome careers out there for anyone who loves mountain biking. Things you can do where you are given plenty of time to ride, race and thrive within the sport.
Turns out, you don't need the sport to pay you for it to be a worthwhile endeavor. We're all super lucky to get to do this at all. I think the more we have this sort of attitude, the better the entirety of the culture really is.
Regarding the Frameworks salaries... As has been said here earlier I think, Neko said that Unno paid Angel's contact for this year so they got him for super cheap. Maybe $25k salary + his travel/bike expenses paid. Neko is likely taking a very minimal salary, Martin is probably discounting himself, but I can't see him doing it for less than $75k/yr. The mechanics are not big name mechanics and they're working part of the year so probably $40k each X2.
Asa is the wildcard... In the past juniors would be getting paid nothing... but he's going to likely be winning races, getting on TV, etc. Good chance he's making $50k because other brands would have snagged him up for less than that. I doubt there is a big bonus structure in this team because Frameworks does not have deep pockets to find money from or a parent company to use as insurance... etc.
I agree 100%. Ride and race for the enjoyment and the time with your kids. But sometimes it works out and its just a bonus on top of all the great time and learning you do with your kid.
The Delano was offered in blue, and you can see part of the bike in that pic.....in a similar blue. It was also first offered with DPX2, and it has UDH....
I have no facts regarding the subject, and anyone wiser is welcome to correct me, but 40k$ sounds WILD for a race mechanic salary. If we count like 10 races a years for the team, 5 days per race, and a few team camps, we get to around 60 days of work. Got to be quite a bike wrench to pay that kind of hourly wage!
/offtopic
They have a new blue color way available on their site now in certain builds... just sayin.
I have no facts other but some things to consider:
- Pretty sure the team will be at a LOT more than 10 races, like most of the US series ones
- Poverty line for a family of 4 is $30k, living wage is a LOT higher
- Health insurance is expensive.
I was like what I forgot he wasn’t even on Commencal anymore
I'm always looking for an excuse to post music, and this feels fitting
Regarding Neko's budget for Frameworks, when I first saw the interview for some reason I thought the number he quoted came across as the budget without salary, just the budget to run all the rest of the operations for the team for the season. Maybe I am totally wrong.
Also, update on #frecklegate. He's playing hard to get.
Sure says a lot about Neko's frames if Angel picks them to ride when money isn't in the equation, and he could ride just about any frame.
Watching the team launch video, Angel had never even ridden the frame until that day. That's a huge risk IMO but then again these guys are fast no matter what and can adapt. He must have really trusted Neko's Geo/kinematic.
That and the fact he's managed by Martin Whitely and probably didn't have many other options, Frameworks was his best option. If he does well this year maybe he'll get better offers.
Surprised nobody mentioned the proto Tues in the video with Vali. It was fully cloaked, but still...
best thing about the D.Norton hands pic is he had to ask someone else to take it!
the conspiracy is growing...pretty soon someone will cave...
(or there'll be an announcement the day after tomorrow)
Is there a hand version of wikifeet?

Aimi Kenyon on a Trek in Uncrafted kit. Probably old news but hey #TEAMRUMOURS 🤘
They do offer Delano peak builds with the XX Transmission, Stans wheels, and that looks like a DHF front tire and Aggressor rear. I'd say a good guess on the Fezzari Delano peak.
Ew.
Sian Ahern was riding a neoprene wrapped Tues proto in one of Jack Moir's recent videos too
I'll just stop the wound from bleeding more, not a fezz.
Haha, I also use this song quite a bit, when the talk is about waiting. Great match!

I wanna know who the hell is downvoting Fugazi.
