I see your point, but with an electronic switch at the handlebars, you could be choosing between a lot more options than just on/off or even a three position soft/firm/locked out. You could use the electronic lever to choose between as few as two but as many as infinite modes that are configured by the user on the app. Those modes could include smarter LiveValve or FlightAttendant modes that use sensors, algorithms, and active electronics to open and close at a rate of 100hz to respond to terrain in real time. You can't do that without electronics. I'm pretty sure...

Not try sound elitist here (but I'm sure I'm going to)... as I've gotten older, I've started to focus on buying stuff once and buying it right. It means I pay more for stuff, but I'm more invested in it and I enjoy the process of identifying my specific needs and sourcing the product that fits that. That also gives me a chance to support brands that align with things that are important to me like: sustainability, trail/stewardship and conversation, brand identity etc. This is what has lead me to Ketl, Patagonia, etc instead of disposable, questionable supply chain and...

Swapped my TC 2.5 Trail Pro Radial Soft after ~250mi for a Romy 2.5 Trail Pro Radial Soft yesterday. The TC was definitely worn, but could have lasted another 50mi if I didn’t have another tire I wanted to try. Another 100mi and it would have been pretty roached. That’s about what I’d expect to get out of a DHR2 MaxTerra. (I haven’t tried the new MaxTerra compound.) Really good tire in back, with my only real complaint being that the center knobs feel squirmy on high-traction rocks and a little vague on hardpack. Great in loose and loose-over-hard, though...

With the introduction of Hope’s new $2000 brakes I’m feeling increasingly correct in my assessment that the bike industry (or at least the western bike industry) is capitalizing on growing wealth inequality and is increasingly relying on a small constituency of rich fanboys* to keep the lights on, while increasingly high quality, low cost Chinese products capture the low dollar part of the market. *non-derogatory

Had a pretty big ride on the new 2.4 Trail Romy radial, just because it’s quite a bit shorter than the Albert I went up 1 psi, I’m impressed by the grip, after the first ride it measures 60mm knob to knob, gained 2mm from when freshly mounted. It rolls considerably faster than the Albert, I can make it drift/slide without forcing it with the brakes unlike the Albert, still great traction on tech/slippery climbs and great braking traction on the way down too, really nice tyre

Excuse my French, but could we fucking please stop calling bikes "analog", "acoustic", or -the worst I've heard- "bio"? Bikes are bikes. Ebikes are something else. Now get off my fucking lawn you punks!

At the risk.of a massive tangent it's not just the USA and it's not just cycling. Youth sport is in a mess almost everywhere.

You want to feel sick to your stomach? USAC asks xc/cx/road juniors to give them access to their Training Peaks accounts so that some ai-obsessed vulture of a coach can identify riders for development programs based on training metrics.. because there are so few opportunities for young athletes to compete in the United States. “Performance Oriented” national governing body philosophy was pushed on us by the Walton family when they took over USAC. We used to operate on a “developmental” model that you know… prioritized local, regional and national racing experience. Now we are sending kids with decent w/kg straight...

I was listening to a road biking podcast recently. One of the guests on the podcast is currently a DS for a bigger team and used to be a world tour rider. One of the things that came up in discussion is how absolutely insane the new generation of riders are. They are SO fast. They are SO good in their training. They are SO dialed in their nutrition and recovery. The guest made a point to bring up an interesting-to-me factoid: They can't let the younger riders anywhere near the big-name riders during team training rides. None of them...

The etiquette piece might be my single biggest grievance from the ebike crowd. I'm a big guy and climbing is not my strength, so I have PLENTY of experience with being passed on the uptrails by both regular and ebike riders. The ebike riders are exponentially worse at saying excuse me, on your left, or simply making some noise to let you know they're behind you. I've even seen groups of ebike riders talking and laughing about how fast they're cruising past other riders at the top of the climb. These aren't new riders. At the end of the day...

I can feel the downvotes coming, but I'm reminded of a comment I made back in February comparing e-bikes to GLP-1 drugs... Maybe I'm a purist, but isn't part of mountain biking the physical effort and reward? I understand capitalism, but when I see brands cutting analog models while e-bikes continue to dominate sales, it feels like another example of a broader trend: we're pouring investment into technologies that make difficult things easier. Is it possible that because analog bikes have essentially plateaued, so people who already have a sick bike are rounding out their quiver with an e-bike? Also...
