5/12/2026 9:11pm Long time lurker, first time poster here. For some background I’m an aerospace composites engineer and spent several years in Advanced Product Development with an emphasis on environmentally friendly materials. There’s so much to get into on this topic and if folks are interested I’d love to start a dedicated thread on materials and environmental impacts. The TLDR is, carbon fiber as a green product on its own is a fallacy. The raw fiber production may result in a certain level of carbon sequestering, but the process is still so energy intensive I wouldn’t call it an environmental positive. As...

5/9/2026 6:07pm An absolutely brutal read to slog through. Sorry! What I meant to say was that the subject matter of Orbea's deep dive failed to fully resonate with the intended audience, yielding a suboptimal reading experience, and failing to deliver a holistic win-win for big-picture strategic partners in the greater bike industry ecosystem.

3/19/2025 11:57pm I designed that out of Super Deluxe Coil- we measured 'solid' height of bumpers (I think at our test lab max of 5,000 lbf) and designed stroke length around that. So a RS SDLXC 65 stroke should actually get close to 65mm stroke if you smash it hard enough. Remove the bumper and measure the shaft- should be maybe 1-2mm longer than the stroke length. Edit- also agree with Darren about data... I'd probably do the test blind and look at data after ranking everything. Then maybe see if you can make improvements based on data comparison?

3/19/2025 11:56pm A couple of notes on this one. 1. Coil shock strokes are defined with the bottoming bumper removed. So a 65mm stroke shock can only achieve a maximum of 60-62mm due to the solid height of the bumper. 2, On-board data acquisition is not able to explain why one shock is better performing than another as it's only capable of telling you "what" not "why". A good use of the data is defining what suspension velocities you should use for your dyno tests via tools such as histogram data. Darren

2/28/2025 7:26pm Round one of the Coil Shock Shootout: five rear shocks tested on a short section of mostly downhill trail. The shocks have all been tuned for the same bike, and are using the same spring. All shocks have been setup prior to being tested. A Freelap system will record the time for each run, and a subjective measure of perceived speed or "feel" will be noted before looking at the actual time. The Test Rig 2023 Specialized Enduro running an Intend Edge fork, and O-Chain device. I feel the kinematics of the Enduro make it a good test rig with...

2/27/2025 11:20pm I've never ridden the SJ15, don't need to as I rode a SJEVo for 3 years and every single thing that I wanted them to fix (i.e. leverage progression, sta, and BB height mainly), Spesh went in the opposite direction. The one thing they had done right (CS length) they went backwards on. Not surprised that bike is a crash and burn. A used SJevo with a Cascade is flat a better bike. I liked mine with the Mullet shock clevis thing, but still running as a 29er. That fixed a lot of crap by making the BB adjustment actually...

2/27/2025 11:09pm Nah. I enjoyed Brain Cahal's (hey assholes!) Bronson comparison, except I too have ridden multiple generations of Bronsons, and guess what, there is a BIG effing difference. The problem as I see it is 3 fold: 1) It was a known regular track, they knew exactly where they were going and that isn't the same as riding your best on a less well known trail. 2) The climbing didn't matter, hello STA & CS length! 3) They are 2 very good riders and that makes up for a lot. Less capable riders are going to be more sensative to HTA...

2/27/2025 9:45pm Yup, one thing I've learned from making things out of all kinds of things from all kinds of materials is that glue can be one of the strongest joints when the parts have the correct clearance, surface finish, cleanliness, application method, fixturing, temperature and cure time but if just one of things is wrong it might be completely useless! A bike company could maybe control 1 or 2 of those things before shipping the parts out but leaving the rest in the hands of a customer is a recipe for disaster...

2/26/2025 7:53pm It's because most of the dirt is flung from behind by the spinning front tire and the reverse arch blocks the seals from that.

2/23/2025 3:58pm I used the gen1 Motion Instruments setup quite a bit, and both agree and disagree. Strictly chasing numbers on DAQ is stupid and won't make the bike feel good. But using it to get the suspension balanced front/rear is great (especially a couple years ago when manufacturer settings seemed pretty far off). Also, it was really great way for me to help identify what each setting did in terms of ride feel (sometimes that would overlap, which was also good to know because sometimes I didn't want to change one thing but still needed to change another). For example, getting...
