Oh and the data card at the back of the machine - Typical peak speeds are about 6-8m/s on downhill bike forks, and shocks will be up to around 2.5-3m/s. Most dampers "should" be fairly linear up to those max speeds - some aren't by design, but its rare for the ports to "choke" and start generating excessively high rates at those speeds (despite what some people think). It's more likely that high acceleration causes issues (so very high frequency but relatively low speed) which is why the linear actuator dynos exist.

The machine is basically a motor that turns a shaft, which is turned in to linear up and down motion. The software runs the machine faster and faster, and measures how much force the damper is producing at every point and speed in the stroke. My machine is a CTW "rotary" type dyno with 2 HP and one of the more basic, lower power machines on the market (I think about $15,000 USD today). CTW was born out of a company called Roehrig who pioneered workshop damper testing in the early 90's - many of the older racecar and motorcycle...

A 5 foot huck to flat could probably get you to an inital shaft speed of around 5m/s or 5000mm/s. Simple equation: time to drop = (2*height/g)^(1/2) so sqrt of 2*5/32 = .56s Speed at impact -> speed = time * acceleration or .56 g aka .56*32=17.92ft/s. You can do some more math to figure out how landing slope angle and head angle affect shaft speed, but it's not that important. If a huck to flat gets you to 5m/s i bet you can find bumps that do more. Another limitation of dyno charts: spiking occurs where exactly? Oh, off...

Hand dyno is basically just jerking off a shock. Need a load cell and velocity sensor to be able to generate graphs. The big flaw of the shock/damper dyno is it only tells you what it tells you, it's isolating things. So like in a real suspension system you have the chassis and the spring and those things interact in complex ways. If you watch video tours of fox R&D they seem to maybe dyno whole forks, but looks to be purely vertically which eliminates a lot of the side loading that happens in real life (actually loading the bushings...

Forks frequently see shaft speeds of 4m/s and in general up to about 8m/s (see this video by Vorsprung). Rear shocks see quite a lot slower shaft speeds in general due to two reasons: Leverage ratio and often not being the first in line for the hit.

Just printed a set in ASA. Got a trip next weekend to snowshoe. Gonna try them on the downhill bike, seems the best place for bar ends.

I think it’s just a reference to the fact that Ari has multiple suspension layouts with different aesthetics

What is the relevance of having a ”vertical shock”? Why does it matter? At some point I have heard a newbie say that he is looking for a bike and he had found a Santa Cruz, but he didn't like it because it has no ”vertical shock”. I laughed and explained to him that it doesn't matter so much in the grand scheme of things for a shock to be ”vertical”. Now I see this on my favorite MTB site. Is it a Pinkbike-ish ”wAtEr bOtTLe sPaCe iS sOmEtHiNG i LiVe aNd diE fOr”? Thanks, Mx

You're probably right, but there's no way the parts for a full build cost 800 fun tokens, so there's a disparity one way or another.

Frame only pricing is a psyop to make building your own bike less appealing/practical so you suck it up and buy the full build

Base build for only $800 more than frameset... yeesh. Gotta wonder how cheap those parts are.

Good looking bike from Ari, had one one on pre-order but ended up canceling due to the reach being on the short side and just wanted a bit more travel.

EN, CE and UL testing/validation and certification takes time. Getting a new battery chemistry reviewed, tested, certified, fab lines tooled for production and enough production locked in to deliver product is a multi-year effort. Potentially multi-year +1 or 2 right now with how much of this certification, testing and production is being consumed by data center stuff. Regarding the 1p or 2p refers to how you make MAH capacity in multi-cell battery packs. You wire cells in series to hit a certain voltage, and then you wire those cells that are in series into parallel pairs to get the capacity...

From the pictures at least one of them is in front of the motor, the other in the downtube, I really hope it is the 650 below as that would mean a really well handling bike for 90% of my rides. If it's the 330Wh that kind of defeats the entire points as I don't see any situation where 330Wh would be enough by themselves (ok maybe 1 hour ride in eco mode). Based on the shock mounts we could assume the same EX, MX, LX options may be available, which would make this an incredible quiver killer: from small...

Norco had the different size battery option a couple years ago. 540, 720 and 900 watt hour sizes. They were using the EP8 at the time. Unfortunately the interface sucked and they were prone to connectivity issues among other things.

I was told by a shop guy that they both go inside the frame, one on top of the other. I would hope that the main one goes down low, and the add-on goes up high. It'd also be cool if you could run either one down low depending on distance needs... 330 for after work ride, 650 for weekend, or 650+330 for big epics.

From my understanding, the Trek will use a longer normal sized downtube battery and a smaller brick sized "range extender" at the bottom bracket. In my head I'm seeing something the size of a power tool battery. I really like this battery modularity. Were starting to see more of this like specialized Levo able to run off range extender only. I think the Bosch Crestline is one of the only bikes out there that really nailed this being able to run the 400, 600 and 800 batteries.
