The 'estimated' revenue numbers posted were pretty hilarious. Reminds me of that one time, I got cornered in Andorra World Cup while eating breakfast, by a certain top american DH guy's agent/mentor/preacher...I was in a contract negotiation with said rider during my time for a gear brand I worked for in that moment, dude says "listen man, we're just trying to get ____ his share of the billions you guys are making".....I literally spit out my Muesli while laughing. So yeah, estimates....funny.

It’s likely to be the (dubiously legal) attention economy/old media roll-up that the Ellison family is creating.

I have a real hard time believing AI is going to result in some sort of utopia for the masses. There's enough money right now that we could all get some level of UBI and be working less and spending more time on our passion projects. But when have the ultra wealthy EVER wanted to part with even a little bit more of their money? If we just give them a few more tax breaks to pay for their data centers and help subsidize the cost of the electricity and water to run them so they can become trillionaires, THEN...

Late stage American capitalism. Why design, innovate, or disrupt when you can own and do nothing?

A lawyer friend was nice enough to download the first 20 pages of the Kenstone V Haro brief for me. The most telling thing: The ceo of Kenstone made herself the ceo of Haro and her cousin the sales manager, allowed way too much stuff ordered on her watch, installed the new CEO, and now Kenstone is looking for about...

2023. Remember, he came from Specialized, aka the people that are still sitting on softgoods and bikes they massively over-ordered during the pandemic, because they were led by a vacuum cleaner salesman. Kenstone felt like they were “missing out” because they had zero bikes during peak bull-whip effect, a bummer for them because they are vertically integrated… they were getting...

Whoever was doing drop bar product management and copy writing at Haro ripped off a bunch of copy and graphic design work I developed for a client. Not too mad too see this interation fail. Going back to earlier parts of this thread- Haro is a bit of an odd duck. I might blame Bjarke for ripping off my clients...

The fallout of the life of remittances under precarity is always under-investment and under development in countries of origin. If you enjoy heterdox economics as much as i do, Immanuel Ness has written extensively on the subject, his most recent text, Migration As Economic Imperialism: How International Labor Mobility Undermines Economic Development in Poor Countries (2023) is impeccably researched and...

Occam's razor strikes again. The private 'non-traditional' school was a huge tell but... Ya know ya try not to be judgemental but the reality comes to light regardless. Kids don't just start business ventures for millions of dollars randomly. Hell most average kids are struggling to do the standard college to job transition nowadays. Well hope that guy prayed for his 100k back or somethin...

Station bikepark is a real simple story; Rhett’s private school was funded by Musk(some of his spawn attend it). Musk fronted the principal the money to buy the ranch for Rhett’s project. The principal obviously doesn’t want to/can’t afford to own hundreds of acres of property in the Hillcountry. If you have a few million laying around… its a lovely...

The family that owns Thunder has a son that, at least when I worked there, wasone of the top 10 earners in the “clean energy” hedge fund space. Like some of my favorite southeastern bikeparks, Thunder is a wealth management scheme. Their goal is to either lose x amount of money every year or break even, thus reducing the tax...

So, the elevator pitch here is Strava, but with privacy protections? You can’t call something “racing” and then not have consistent timing though. 2 practiced volunteers using something like keypad entry on the Zone4 android app or two sync’d google sheets +hand timing is ultimately more accurate than using phones or head units and algorithms, I would think. I salute...

I have never used Strava or a gps unit on a bike but I have timed, promoted and officiated dozens of gravity races, and I regularly use various gps devices to collect GIS data for trail building. I don’t understand your assumption that phone or handlebar mounted GPS data will be sufficient to time anything? I get you can try...

The drag on skis or a snowboard is way lower than on a bikes tires. Mechanically, you are melting a tiny bit of snow with the base of your skis/board and creating a slip plane that you then slide across. Whereas bike tires are attempting to dig into the ground lol.

My buddy Brady bought all the hcor servers from John and relocated them(they were a physical thing) but then lost them in a fire. He recovered all the text data but the photos are gone forever. It’s a real bummer, message boards used to be such a rad hive of barely-mediated expression and experiences. Instead of using algorithms to identify...

I feel you, but some hardtails are legitimately comfortable (when reframed as gravel bikes…) speci Fuse is stiff and sucks, epic hardtail is compliant and feels so good to ride. im telling you guys, the majority of the gravel segment has never tried a mtb (thinks they don’t need one, overbiked, etc.) or doesn’t even need a “gravel bike” (just needs a road bike with 38s and lower gearing.) the gravel category exists because people think road bikes can’t have 45c tires and also that mountain bikes are silly and unnecessary for singletrack. What we see in practice though is...

I know that today courses with alot of flow and huge jumps are the thing but I would love to see an all natural track come back. 2009 and 2010 Gravity East Series courses at Whiteface where winning pro time was 7+ minutes. Ask Neko how taxing these courses were! No machine work needed!

This is the funny thing about whiteface. It is owned and run by the state, so its simplify the state choosing to ignore another part of the state. It won't get canceled. Some people will be angry, maybe a lawsuit will get filed. The stuff on the open ski runs will get pushed flat again so they can groom and they will argue about it again next year.
