Jeff, As a human who gets paid to help people sell bicycles, I am much more interested in the metrics that relate to human flourishing, not ecological carrying capacity. Consumers can’t consume if they are precarious- and the precarity of the American Consumer is hard to deny. It takes more than looking at GDP to understand consumers- dashboards like this...

Just a timely reminder that finance does not equal economics, and that there are many disciplines of economics, many of which do a much better job explaining the human condition and the condition of the planet. Development Economics and Ecological Economics are both valuable heterdox disciplines that give us more tools to understand the world. A recent integrated multidisciplinary approach...

At the side of the Whiteface DH track I overheard a guy in Gates apparel talking about their commitment moving forward to DH so I don't expect them to disappear, but Gates is a huge company so priorities can shift. I bet the "purse" is an insurance policy that is written against the odd's of someone actually winning. From the marketing side the more you do the same thing over and over it looses its impact, so they may be putting their spend in other places. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prize_indemnity_insurance

Exactly, Thom Weisel / Lance Armstrong engaged in some pretty amazing insurance fraud in that manner, betting for and against themselves by rigging the game. I love re-watching the tapes from those depositions! But Gates, while they make decent parts for excavators and automobiles, has been trying for more than 15 years to get traction in the bike world. They...

I was thinking the same thing… if you “buy” Felt, you have a more attractive proposition to sell to your OEM manufacturer than just Unno…

He's looking for a new sport, really. How many fully-salaried Enduro racers are there left?

Allow me to pass out tin foil hats. One of these riders is an employee for Faction Bike Studio (Engineering house (MULTIPLE bike brands use their services)). What are the odds of both of them being employees? Being that they're QC based (relatively short driving distance to Highland) - could it be an eastern Canadian Brand (*cough* Devinci?), OR, Faction might just have a DH bike development in the works for an undisclosed brand (which seems more likely).

I’ve been in multiple well-merchandised shops lately with fresh signs that say they won’t work on any bikes older than 8 years, and they will only work on ebikes from brands they sell. The no-old bikes thing makes me cringe, but I can only imagine how many mechanics in the trenches would love to narrow down which ebikes they need...

Hmm, well for me personally I can't think of any complex things that excite me be it electronic suspension, electronic drivetrain/dropper, high pivots, gearbox, etc. Although I absolutely want all the innovation and experimenting for the industry as a whole, as a buyer I just look at dudes like Asa and Jackson winning on what look like fairly stock / simple bikes (yes, I know they are tuned to their absolute MAX with the assistance of technology). So as an 'average' customer ( see; BMXer who still doesn't know shit about MTB ) I am excited about brands offering builds/configs...

Can confirm this is real. You think the guy at Avalanche suspension is "interesting", Howard Messner was on another level of insane. Ohlins actually cut ties with him for abusing customers pretty much. Sadly he died in 2022 but that man turned shitbox harley davidsons into bikes that were less shit that's for sure. A true suspension genius. I was his first Australian customer approx 15 years ago, I had to talk to him for weeks to persuade him I wasn't a nigerian scammer lol. I had to go to my local library and use the fax machine to place...

I guess this is what happens when a company that hasn't done much marketing over the years starts doing some.. Let me guess, they hired a marketing person and they are pulling a Cracker Barrel deal..

I’m pretty sure Ohlins main aftermarket customers are Harley owners. As long as the remote reservoir remains gold, all the other guys at the country club will still think you’re cool.
