Remember when everyone got all up in arms a couple months ago cuz Specialized made a new shock for the new Stumpy that had that scary word associated with it (**proprietary**😱) and it seemed like you had to ride the bike with the shock? Well, we got to go test with Specialized for a few days to see what led them down the path of making a larger volume air shock with two-stages. Make a well engineered but expensive to manufacture component that is reliable. Or. Make a cheap but unreliable component and just keep replacing it. A large number of the components will never actually be used enough to fail anyway (and so are very profitable) and those that are will be replaced immediately (and cheaply). Customers remember 'the outstanding customer service' rather than having a component that never actually needed it in the first place and associate that with being a good product. eg, Trek spec the '1248' freeehub body on a load of wheelsets, it's absolute garbage and fails constantly...

It does seem like there’s been an uptick in serious injuries/even death the last few years. It certainly has me thinking harder about the risks I choose. I’m finding myself being more cautious about riding solo, and contemplating better protection (riding in a full face more, looking at buying chest protection for when riding more difficult terrain). I think the question posed in the article -“is mountain biking inherently more dangerous” is a pretty clear -yes. Speed/steep terrain/hard surfaces. Pretty obvious what’s going to do more damage, two feet of powder or a tree stump. I am curious how rise...

We used to normal bleed everything at rockshox in the shop. A wet bench/vice setup would be ideal. Somewhere you can spill a bunch of oil and not worry about it. This is what we had- Cookie pan under the vice and seal it up, get a drain fitting and hose and run that to a 5 gal bucket on the floor. You can then just build and dump oil out on the vice with no cleanup.

It's quite possible that it would use a magnetic connection to charge. The Reform saddles use this style of connection to power the heating element in the saddles during the molding process

I wonder what an Atherton steel hardtail would cost... Lugged. 12 sizes. Rigorously tested. Perfect bottom bracket. Perfect headset. Peace of mind knowing that it's all made as well as possible. Lifetime warranty. Long term support. A little caché from the name. $1500 is completely within the realm of possibilities there. What is your hourly wage at your job? Should people who have a job they like be paid well enough to survive and retire? Put in an order for a pair. The 2 most immediate benefits that come to mind are a lower center of gravity on any given bike and the ability to glance off pedal strikes. No too excited about the "pendulum cradling effect" these will have, I think if you're in the chunk going fast you will get blown off regardless of using these or regular pedals - happy to be proven wrong though!

This pedal is one of those ideas that seemingly makes obvious sense – it's incredibly baffling that it hasn't been done. I wonder if there'd be advantages to a clipless implementation. 🤔
