I tried an Assegai on my last bike and felt the same way; the cornering grip was a step down from the Minion DHF that I had on before that. I'm still stuck on the DHFs. I like the 3c MaxxGrip ones the best (softest compound).

Am I the only one who thinks the fact that we've seen some big name not make the show this year makes things pretty exciting?

My understanding is that a lot of the magic of the gen 2 Optic was the shock tune of the RS Super Deluxe that came with it, so I would either try to track one of those shocks down or find a smart suspension tuner and see how close you can to that RS tune with a Fox shock. But I think if you just slap a random shock off the shelf you're only going to be experiencing some of the magic of the bike.

So this happened. While I can't afford a Reya or Spur, a second hand Optic frameset will do nicely. All the parts off my beloved N+1 hardtail. I'm still tossing up what shock to get between a Float and Float SL (RS shock is not mine) if anyone has any advice? 13.4kg as it sits in these photos and a bucket load of fun!

Honestly the stock tune is fairly firm as-is.

That was my point, just get a longer stem or don't do it at all. Bar geometry varies a lot, bars with the same angle of sweep can have very different sweep distances because it depends where the bend in the bar actually is. You might not gain reach, or you might gain too much and have way more of the "long stem" feel than you bargained for. It's trial and error really. If you're happy with your current bar geometry and you're just looking for a "reach" adjust then a new stem is literally the thing that is designed...

The point about defence spending having a positive affect on the rest of the economy- in my lectures this was talked about using the concept of the multiplier effect. Agree that if shifting is fine at one end of the cassette but not the other, the first thing to check is alignment. That could be a bent hanger, bent derailleur, or derailleur "lean" from a worn b-bolt. If you're into mountain biking enough to be on this forum, buy a good hanger and a DAG.
