Here's another thought on Amaury's steel oval-shaped chainstay. The obvious conclusion is that they're chasing a particular amount of flex that they couldn't get out of aluminum, but here's another idea: What if they already had the level of flex they wanted out of the old bike, but they were breaking aluminum chainstays left and right? It makes sense that the chainstay would be the weak point in a flexy rear end, because it's the direct line from the bottom bracket (aka where most of the rider's mass is transmitted to the rest of the chassis) to the rear axle...

^agree... and they could have welded that thing in the breakroom at Commencal HQ. Not sure if they have in-house Aluminum fab capabilities.

What I'm suggesting is: what if a disproportionate, predictable, and inconvenient amount of failures are happening at the chainstay? For instance, imagine a rider going through 4 front triangles in a whole season but replacing 4 chainstays in a single weekend. I'm not suggesting that all those failures would be big, catastrophic, run-ending failures, but if there are cracks consistently forming at the welds over and over again throughout a weekend and you have to be swapping chainstays constantly, that's a major PITA for the riders and mechanics. And what if there was a simple way to fix that by...

Great news! The Assegai, DHF, and DHR2 are all available in a hard compound with DH casing. Maxxis calls it "Dual Compound." All three of those are available in 29 and the DHR2 is also available in a 2.5x27.5. So everybody gets a long wearing, durable rear tire. We just had this discussion (at great length) in the tire forum: https://www.vitalmtb.com/forums/hub/tire-chat-nerds-only?page=3#comment

More progressive bikes provide more mid stroke support IF they are sagged the same. What’s often overlooked is the fact that sag at the wheel is increasingly greater than the sag at the shock as a bike gets more progressive. This gives the perception of less mid stroke and riding deep in travel, but is usually just the result of having more sag at the wheel than expected. The other nuance is how damping is affected. You have to run a stiffer tune. In the end if you aren’t hammering on the bike none of this is ideal, but it’s...

Personally I don’t get why companies would be guarded when it comes to their curves from the standpoint of them being copied. I doubt Norco is trying to copy Ibis or the other way around. But even if they were, replicating the geo is easy when you have the time and resources. In regards to unspoken metrics, you can come up with a billion different things if you really want. Curvature, derivatives of things, integrals of things and such. One of the more interesting ones to me is percent increase in damping force for a given wheel speed input as...

Yeti is not and never has been DW. They did all sorts of different things (single pivots, rails, etc.) then went for the bearing executed Switch suspension, developed further to Switch Infinity which uses links. The e-bike and the DH bike use a 6-bar design that is not dissimilar to Switch Infinity in characteristics, called Sixfinity. The XC bike is a single pivot flex stay, as is normal for XC bikes these days... Looks like the suspension system is not worth as much as less weight is. Devinci is Split Pivot (not Horst) like it has been for... How long...

I remember Chris Porter writing somewhere on Instagram that part of reason for the larger offsets on dual crown forks is that they deflect less than single crown forks. I took that to mean single crown forks have a larger effective offset than the static 42/44mm when you're actually standing on the bike because of how they flex.

Why would you want anything different? If more front-end stiffness is what you want; a 20mm axle wouldn't really help with that. If they wanted to increase stiffness, they would have needed to go to a keyed axle to really tie the stanchions together. There's no point in just making the axle bigger in diameter. It would achieve nothing. The "axle" isn't really an axle anyways. It bears no radial load. It's a basically just a big draw bolt. Its only job is to clamp the hub into the drop-outs with substantial pressure. A 15mm axle can do that job...

Let's just be clear, when we are talking about Codes not being powerful... Are we talking about Code R or Code RS(C)? Because there is a world of difference between the two.

From my experience with calipers, bolted vs mono block isn’t all that important as long as the bolted interface is done properly. That entails getting the fasteners as close to the rotor as possible and maximizing contact area between the two halves. Most the deflection should be between the joint/bridge and the bottom edge of the caliper regardless of how it’s constructed. In my mind for bikes, most the benefit of a mono block lies in packaging. Not having to worry about big bolts frees up space. The bridge across the center of magura calipers would be hard to fit...
