1/10/2025 7:01pm One of the good points that Darren from Push made about stiffness with their new USD fork was that torsional stiffness was overblown because front wheel traction limits the amount of force the front wheel experiences while riding. While you may be able to brace the wheel with your legs and twist the handlebars to show some twisting, that level of force is substantially higher than what is experienced in normal riding. I do take that with a grain of salt, since there was a little bit too much marketing speak from Push in the discussion but it was a...

1/6/2025 7:30am Danny Hart's GT Fury caught a lot of attention this past World Cup season as it had some notable structural frame modifications to increase compliance. Dale, Danny's mechanic, is a veteran frame engineer and had some great ideas on how to fine tune Danny's bike to work best for his style and to eke out the literal hundreths of a second needed to win races. If you haven't seen these mods, check out this quick section of Vital's PIT BITS video here. Let's dig into each modification. This will be extra fun because I was fortunate enough to be the...

12/12/2024 7:23am People are ridiculous and nearsighted about price. $400 more than a cane creek or Ohlins and you got a totally custom shock from a guy doing cool things. If that’s what you want. Less than that, actually, because the custom setup you want plus shipping is gonna run you $200. Sounds like a good deal. Just like how an Atherton costs what an Sworks or Santa Cruz costs

12/12/2024 7:23am Having spent a good long while on the Telum on my Dreadnought v2 all I can say is that it's everything I'd expect it to be and more. Honestly for how well built, thought out, and amazing this shock is I am honestly impressed it doesn't cost more. Between the shock, the tune hub and just Vorsprung's ethos to customer care and service, I can that it's been worth every cent I've paid for it. Also, Steve and the team at Vorsprung are just solid humans. I ended up having a couple needs on the shock taken care of during...

12/11/2024 5:07pm When you order it, it does actually come tuned for you already. But since a lot of people love tinkering with their setups, we figured we'd try to make it easier rather than obstruct their efforts.

11/30/2024 4:52pm Hi there, Cam here from Outlier MTB. First and foremost, thank you all for your positive comments and support during our recent launch! I see that some of you have been discussing the actual pedal drop on this forum. There have been some misunderstandings that we would like to take some time to clear up. Our Pendulum pedal as it was released has 6mm of drop measured from the centre of the axle to the top of the platform. Most flat pedal platforms are somewhere between 5-7mm above the axle so our pedals are essentially ~12mm bellow your average pedal...

11/27/2024 5:58pm Have you considered reaching out to Matt at Cass Labs? Last I saw him he was running an ochain and said he was hoping to do a follow-up to that video you posted. Pretty approachable guy. In my mind I'm not sure if your 'you can only choose one' directive could work, I don't see how you could isolate the cause to be pedal kickback rather than some other input without multiple measurements. My 'other' suggestion would be weight sensors on the pedals, looking for an abrupt increase in weight on the leading foot and a decrease in weight on...

11/11/2024 11:08am Hey, I’m Ryan Burney. I’ve spent eight years as an engineer for full-suspension bikes, working on some fun projects, like developing the flex Horst link for the Cannondale Scalpel and being lead engineer for the latest GT Fury downhill bike. With over a decade of downhill racing under my belt (even made it to one World Cup—though I didn’t qualify so I stuck to engineering), I've had the pleasure of racing alongside the Vital crew, like Jason, Tanner, and Dak. Below is a photo of me, being slower than Dak. These days, I’m focused on my own projects, but I...

10/30/2024 11:34am That's one reason for the various air cans, and in a world where you can get a Starling with 0% progression or a Privateer with 44% progression, big brands like Rockshox and Fox need OEM options to fit a super wide range of suspension parameters. There are other benefits to more air volume though, like more mechanical leverage to overcome seal drag. In the coil vs. air battle, more volume is a pretty powerful tool to help air chase performance. That's what they did with the new Boxxer air spring: bigger volume, smaller piston size, more PSI ===> "coil like...

10/28/2024 9:15am It was a couple years back. They didn't creak, but the ramp teeth had worn down to nubs and shift quality had deteriorated dramatically. The drivetrain was setup by a shop, so theoretically it was installed correctly. Shimano warrantied both of them then I sold the system to go bleep bloop.

9/24/2024 10:14am There is not much space for sustainability/environmentalism in a high consumption sport like mountain biking. As far as equipment goes, the most sustainable thing you can do is buy a bike that will last you more than a season or two, and avoid driving a lifted Tacoma to the trailhead.

9/6/2024 10:48am This diagram (taken from Analysis techniques for racecar data acquisition by Jorge Segers) shows the level of vibration passed through when comparing 2 parts of the system (it is simplified for theoretical purposes). 1 on the y-axis means the size/displacement of the vibration output is equal to the input (ie rolling slowly over a large bump, the vehicle rises the same amount as the wheel). A value greater than one happens around the natural frequency where the input gets amplified (movement at the chassis is larger than the bump). Red line = body of the vehicle bouncing on the suspension...

9/6/2024 8:23am This is one thing I’ve been wondering about. To get say 1lb to have a natural frequency in the realm of braking bumps you need stupidly stiff springs. So stiff they are a little hard to find with meaningful amounts of deflection.

TEAMROBOT Liked a reply to forum topic Tuned Mass Dampers and Mountain Bikes
9/6/2024 8:22am It depends on what vibrations you're trying to damp. If you're trying to damp the natural frequency of braking bumps, then I think mounting to the sprung mass is the clear pick. If you're trying to damp the natural frequency of the tires (tires are a largely undamped air spring), then mounting to the unsprung rear triangle would make sense. The seat tube is about 450 cm away from the rear axle, whereas the fork-mounted TMD is sitting almost directly inline with the front axle, so the front mount is in a much better position to damp suspension movement than...
