TEAMROBOT Liked a reply to forum topic Tuned Mass Dampers and Mountain Bikes
9/6/2024 8:22am It depends on what vibrations you're trying to damp. If you're trying to damp the natural frequency of braking bumps, then I think mounting to the sprung mass is the clear pick. If you're trying to damp the natural frequency of the tires (tires are a largely undamped air spring), then mounting to the unsprung rear triangle would make sense. The seat tube is about 450 cm away from the rear axle, whereas the fork-mounted TMD is sitting almost directly inline with the front axle, so the front mount is in a much better position to damp suspension movement than...

8/26/2024 11:52pm I've been away for a while, so not checking regularly for a couple weeks, so I spent a couple hours trying to catch up, prolly 12 or so pages the content and tone of comments has changed drastically in the last year. I can only assume with increased users and engagement, which has brought along with it, a much more negative and judgy tone. I was drawn to this comment section for the rumours and innovation (and spy shots, and great info from the likes or TEAMROBOT, Cascade, Dave, and many others) but I find myself turned off by the...

8/16/2024 1:07pm Three example bikes with different progression and same amounts of travel. All straight lines for the sake of simplicity. Force at the wheel due to spring rate alone with each bike having identical sag at the wheel (stiffer spring for more progressive bike). Lets say you are railing a long long berm and your rear wheel needs to support 400 lbs of force… if the berm is long enough shaft speed goes to zero (save for bumps in the berm of course) so spring is what holds you up. 27% bike will sit at 180mm of travel used and 37%...

8/16/2024 1:06pm If two bikes are compared and one is twice as progressive as the other, there are only two ways the more progressive bike uses more travel: a softer spring (it should run a stiffer spring to maintain sag) or a comparatively soft shock tune. The damping is the most often overlooked. It’s not uncommon to need a 20-30% stiffer tune if you make a 10% jump in progression and want damping to feel similar. This is just conservation of energy plain and simple. The issue WC riders have once progression gets past the mid 30s is their damping tune and...

7/27/2024 10:32am It’s not just the cassette that’s magic. Insiders at both Shimano and Sram have explained it to me like this: There’s nothing timing the first movement of the derailleur except your thumb pressing the button. The first actual chain derailment might not happen immediately however because the cassettes have been designed to very strongly encourage the shift to occur only where the gates/ramps allow it. For subsequent shifts the system estimates how long it will take until the next gate/ramp lines up with the chain, and delays the shift until that time has elapsed so that the chain engages with...

7/16/2024 11:05am Thanks Sspomer, Has anyone noticed a real change recently from open mindedly discussing/presenting rumours and innovations, to endless posts about "opinions as facts" on the topics? Maybe its just me, but I felt like this thread used to be more open to ideas, and just seeing cool things, and I'd like a return to that. These new things arent for everyone, and not every product is meant to be the perfect fit for everyone, which is friggin great, we should want diversity in the marketplace, shouldnt we? I feel like we have strayed from that recently.....

5/6/2024 11:46am Doubt they do that. More likely GPS is used to log the position on track where the telemetry data is being recorded.

5/6/2024 11:45am I would assume the little black sensor next to the electronic adjuster is a GPS receiver. So there can be some amount of automation to the dampening settings based on a preloaded track map. I would guess the handlebar buttons are for override or some kind of modification if needed.
