notthatbryan Added a reply to Assegai no grip zone

I find the Magic Mary to be a big improvement over the Assegai until the trails get super dried out and hard in the summer (might as well be pavement hard). I have folded the side knobs on the MM in those conditions. I usually switch to a Tacky Chan for late spring and the summer and go back to...

While it's true that other parts of setup can cause the same issues, I had issues with the Assegai but not with other tires. The Assegai clearly works for a lot of people, but there are also a decent amount of people who it doesn't work well.

I hated the Assegai. It would inconsistently wash a couple inches to the outside mid turn when leaned over. It made it hard for me to commit to weighting the front end. On the same trails I've never had that happen with a DHF, Magic Mary, or Tacky Chan. I don't have an issue with tires with a big channel...

I’m currently running a Magic Mary Radial with a Romy Diagonal in the rear, and I like how much zippier it feels vs the radial Albert with the same compound. I have a TC radial to potentially replace the Mary up front coming in a week or so, so I can let you know if you haven’t decided by then.

I'm strongly leaning towards the new Tachy Chan 2.5 radial for the front paired with a Romy rear. I'm deciding between diagonal and radial for the rear for my trail bike. Might give the High roller 3 up front with the new Dissector on the rear a go. Not sure where I'll end up towards the end of the summer...

I’ve always described Maxxis rubber as being porous/low density and that feels like what causes it to wear so quickly. I don’t know how much truth there is to that, anyone else have a similar thought?

Are you prying at the seal on the inner or outer ring contact point? When it comes to mine (and my wife's) bike, I am trying to protect the main bearings like this:

That sounds an awful lot like they actually didn't get the leverage curve they wanted. Nothing wrong with designing a frame to work with the natural progressivity of an air shock, but if you use all the volume spacers in the air shock you spec stock, you probably would be better served with a more progressive leverage curve.

For me, the main data points on radials is that comparing my previous Continental Xynotol Enduro Soft vs the Schwalbe Trail Pro Radial Soft is that the Schwalbe is 35g lighter (3%), the radials have more grip, roll similar, are more comfortable at slower speeds, but seem to puncture significantly easier on the sidewall. The enduro mag test seemed to confirm that, where enduro casing had a ~28% puncture resistance compared to 9% on trail radial, although I am not sure where on the tire that was tested, and they did not change the pressures. Puncture resistance was my main...

In theory radials will be easier to cut than a regular bias ply MTB tire. Because the threads in the carcass are more parallel to each other it's easier to slice between them.

I would say Magic Mary front, Romy rear but the Magic Mary will throw pebbles at your feet and down tube. If she's an intermediate rider she's unlikely to push hard enough to get tread squirm or fold the edge knobs of the Magic Mary which is really it's only weakness. I'm considering the new Radial 2.5 Tacky Chan front...

In GA, mostly loose over hard conditions I have ended up replacing the Soft Nobby Nick Super trail on the rear of my trail bike about once a year (probably around 1,000 miles), but that's from wear on the sidewall as much as the tread. They wear better than Maxxis Maxterra on the rear.
I'm pretty sure it was in the team rumors thread that the discussion of Asa being pursued by bigger teams came up.. My thoughts were that a little less money now at the start of his career is worth the people and environment that he's in. Someone said that no money was left on the table. I still have a hard time believing that. But, that 1st race, 1st win makes the choice look good regardless of the money. Hopefully, Asa has a long, successful career ahead of him..

I futzed with changing the pushrod length when I owned a couple pairs of Dominions, and they were all set to slightly different lengths from the factory. So I don't buy that they're set at the absolute minimum limit. They definitely have a nominal length specification (I know because when I went too far, I asked for what it should be to go back to factory setting) but assembly tolerances are a thing. The BPC is definitely set to the minimum position from the factory though. It's just that there is slight variation in how far into the pivot bushing...

I’ve listened to the pod a few times. It’s enjoyable! Please take this as help. As I was listening to the pod about Suspension Setup the term “dampening” was mentioned several times. It’s hard to take something as solid advice when improper terms are applied. I’ve been a CNC machinist and programmer for 25+ years. In a tech field nomenclature and terminology are important for effective communication. Any sort of mentoring is going to have a SME, subject matter expert. If you are the SME it’s important that credibility is maintained. For sure during a podcast the situation is dynamic...

Have not heard of that personally except for people that have done adjustments beyond that little bite point screw. Some have experimented with trying to get that piston in there further causing what you experienced or worse. If those are brand new, I would hit up Hayes.

TEAMROBOT Liked a comment about product review Performance Evolved: Hope Tech EVO GR & TR Review

I know MTB tire sidewalls are confusing with so many different compound and casing acronyms, but I can’t think of a bike company with more alien nomenclature to me than Hope. What’s the difference between a Hope Tech 4 V4 and a Hope Tech EVO GR? Is one for bigger bikes and ones for smaller bikes? Is one lighter or more expensive or otherwise presented as the “premium” version? Are they parallel product lines or did one replace the other? I couldn’t even venture a guess. I’m guessing they both have 4 pistons, but that’s the best I can do...
