12/8/2024 6:13pm We used to normal bleed everything at rockshox in the shop. A wet bench/vice setup would be ideal. Somewhere you can spill a bunch of oil and not worry about it. This is what we had- Cookie pan under the vice and seal it up, get a drain fitting and hose and run that to a 5 gal bucket on...

12/8/2024 4:23pm Finally rode this thing… feels close enough to a DH bike, still pedalable although pretty miserable. I lowered the bars about 10mm after riding so well see how that goes next time. 41.6 lbs with tools, no water bottle… Exo+ front and DD rear, so it’ll gain another pound with proper DH tires in summer. Full 200mm boxxer- didn’t feel...

12/6/2024 8:29am Regional DH racing in Colorado/New Mexico has been growing big time the last few years, lots of young racers coming up. The new "SoCal" DH series last year, Neko/Gwinn and company killing it on the East Coast, and the US Open rolling strong. I'd much rather see North American DH racing grow and spread than the UCI-Euro-Cup money grab that Chris Ball has fostered. Bring back the old days when all the fast Euros and Aussies came over to the US to race and make $!

12/1/2024 7:41pm I wonder what an Atherton steel hardtail would cost... Lugged. 12 sizes. Rigorously tested. Perfect bottom bracket. Perfect headset. Peace of mind knowing that it's all made as well as possible. Lifetime warranty. Long term support. A little caché from the name. $1500 is completely within the realm of possibilities there. What is your hourly wage at your job? Should people who have a job they like be paid well enough to survive and retire? Let's pretend this isn't a fully custom bike but a bike that'll be built boutique style but repeatedly. 6 hours to put together the frame...

11/28/2024 10:06am Honest question here: what's the benefit of 13s on MTB, is anyone asking for it? I'd love 13 speed on my 1X road whip, but have never once wanted closer spacing on a trail or enduro bike. I LOVED the move to 12 speed as someone who climbs big hills and started 1-by in the 9 speed days (I was young an also had a SS). The benefit of 12 speed was increased range, and I feel gear spacing is appropriate (now with Transmission improving the sucky 42-52 jump). I don't see additional range being needed, it's the pie-plate and...

11/24/2024 10:37am Some our local rippers / engineers came up with a very unique "axle-less" pedal. Machined here in Calgary, Alberta and testing in the rocky mountains. They use a big ol 6902 bearing for spinny duties. The pendulum (drop pedal) is super interesting. Void pedals (traditional flat) Pendulum pedals (12mm drop) "Our platform sits 12mm below the center of the axle. Most pedals place the platform 5mm or more above the center of the axle. This effectively lowers the rider's center of mass 17mm or more offering a significant stability, and control. During sudden decelerations, the pedal acts as a pendulum...

11/24/2024 7:38am To a point. When I was working as a design engineer not in the bike industry we'd use local manufacturing for prototyping and often it was fucking pathetic, nothing like the drawing, totally unusable, and then you'd have to have arguments or pay extra to get what you actually wanted. Often the machinist "knew better" so disregarded the spec. Or you'd send your drawings off to China and you'd actually get what you asked for, with similar turnaround times, and pay FAR less. You just have to communicate your design intent extremely well, and have your drawings perfect. I work...

11/22/2024 4:11am Magnet works by magnetic moment (which origins from elemental quantity called spin) of unpaired electrons in material being aligned which produces a magnetic field. Roughly speaking ofc.

11/21/2024 3:07pm Thanks for the post (and noting the broken link). I just took care of it. As to the questions... 1) Its pretty light. The low variant has a smaller magnet and weighs ~66 grams (total) whereas the medium and tall variant have larger magnets and weigh ~88 grams (total). These are untrimmed numbers. 2) While pedaling, there is zero additional friction. Pedaling forces always pull the chain off the magnet (immediately, you will not notice it). Also, while in the higher part of your cassette (say, climbing) the magnet is further from the chain and the force significantly weaker, which...

11/14/2024 11:44am The most impressive thing about this thread revival is the thread was started... Before you made your account. That is like holy prophet levels of revival. I'll also chime in that I basically go to Ross and shop for Adidas stuff and it's my favorite riding gear by far. A lot of it has zippered pockets. You're basically looking for more 'running gear' or even soccer stuff, and less basketball or basic gym stuff.

11/12/2024 3:15pm On the stems topic: Back in 2010s I worked for German bike brands, high quality, highly engineered, and all built in Tawain. The factory that built said high quality stems/bars/parts asked us to potentially sell a white label stem in the US. This would have been made right next to said German company parts(aka quality was there) and was designed between US and Tawain engineers. If i remember correctly, cost to build was in the $30s USD and then shipped and landed was around $50 USD. The plan was to sell for $90+. The manufacturer was all hot and heavy...
