You're in England, so you mean underpants, not trousers right?

On the Wrangler train. Value packed and pretty sturdy. Also have a pair of Skylines that are probably 5 or 6 years old that still Hae some life in the them. Riding in New England.

I only ride in pants when it's below 10 degrees, above that it's shirts weather.

As for non MTB pants, like a few mentioned here, I do it the other way around. I have Norrona Fjora pants (and shorts too actually) that I use for riding, hiking, XC skiing and I have used them for ski touring in a few occasions as well. My only gripe with them is that, contrary to the shorts, the thigh pocket is on the front, not on the back of the thigh. Other than that the fit and material are superb and they come in a longer inseam than Norrona's hiking pants which is a plus for me and my size.

I did a casual road/gravel/doubletrack ride in Prana Zions today. They're a bit baggy but have the drawstring around the ankle cuffs

$26 at Walmart the last time I bought a pair.  I like them, except I seem to always poke holes in pocket liners.

And Levi's 514 stretchy jeans for colder months.

J Crew Outlet online at one point was blowing out stretchy synthetic work/casual pants so I bought several pairs. Silly cheap and felt like my riding pants. But they last as long as a fart in the shower. And in the saddle, you depend way too much on your underwear to stay up. Regular pants fall off my pooper.  I've stuck to MTB specific riding pants. But all of them can't be more different.
I've got original Skylines & they're too baggy & thick for anything but winter.
NukeProof Blacklines I love but they're almost retired. Material is just right but despise the pockets.
Fit & perfect pocket placement & material is Rapha Trail Lite (so of course they're not made any more). Think they were $80 on sale.
If I could own 3 pairs of the Trail Lite, I would.

Worn everything from Dickies on up. Not worth the breeze, butt mud & sometimes clumsy fit/feel of non-bike specific pants now that there are near perfect fitting ones out there w/ a hip phone pocket that makes you forget you're carrying a lithium brick around for 2 hours.

I ride pants from Johannes von Klebelsberg, the denim destroyer. Cool.

They're not super durable, but I've ridden in Adidas Soccer pants before, the ones that have the zip on the calf. They're super comfortable, light weight, and easy to ride in and have zip pockets.

Another vote for Wrangler ATG. Costco had them recently for $20 but I’ve gotten them for $18 from Target or Walmart in the past. I’m fortunate enough I could easily afford the $150+ pants but why, just why when they’re virtually identical fabric and cut. The cuff on recent models is a little larger so I wrap a Velcro strap around right pant cuff to ensure it doesn’t get caught in the chain. I’m always shocked at the money people throw at MTB and moto specific clown wear

Wrangler ATG train here too. I do wish the cuffs were a little bigger, or zippered for knee pads. I’ve had mine for a few years now. Solid for $25.

my buddy nick wears swim shorts for years now. honestly great tactic. he is beyond bothered by how expensive mtb specific shorts are, just to be thrashed from one spill and the hyper annoying shh shh shh noise when climbing/pedaling

b/c of that thumbnail search, i'm now getting JNCO ads on youtube. backfire of the year so far 🤣

I'm wearing some weird Wrangler All Terrain Gear pants that I saw on sale. Biggest selling points: were cheap, slim cuffs at the ankle to keep out of chain but had enough room for knee pads, seemed to be durable material, had built-in belt so I could keep pants on during my ride.

Previously all of my shorts/pants would fit more loosely at the end of a ride (probably not helped by the hip pack I was wearing at the time). This one having a built-in-belt meant I could tighten that shit if it started to happen.

I've crashed a ton in them and they've held up well. I don't think they're available any more but the "Wranger ATG Wyoming Trail Jogger" is the most similar thing I could find on their website currently.

Wrangler stretch "tech" pants have been pretty good - work in them and don't need to change pants for the ride after

Just for clarification, are you guys able to fit knee pads under the wrangler atg's? Or any other pants?

The best aspect of Wrangler ATG for me is that they double as office pants. They pill eventually but I have 2 pairs of "Caviar" that are lasting very good.

Another vote for work pants Red Cap, Dickies whatever they just work and they last. I'll roll mine up to just below the knee if a ride starts cold and then gets warmer. I've also used stretchy jeans or pants from Levi's and Lee's and they felt great but didn't last as long. Running knee pads under either options is fine but with the work pants I need to have the pants off to put the knee pads on, the stretchy pants can be accessed either way. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one not buying the MTB specific clothing, at least locally I sometimes I get teased for never having MTB clothing.

Here in nz, mons royale make a good comfy pant called the virage. Light and handy enough pockets but only buy on sale. Also a local brand called macpac do pants marketed as for bouldering. A regular fit but still with pockets and a zipper small one for keys. Much cheaper, light and breathable. Good for riding, hiking and rock climbing.

I was wondering about climbing pants, because they’re articulated

Looks like Wrangler ATG wins!  I don’t even know if you get them in the UK.  I always buy Mtb pants on sale and they never seem to fit or the colour is mental!  I’ve used my jean shorts (jorts?) for a casual spin on the hills, but wear pants most of the year due to stinging nettles which are everywhere in the summer.  Thanks for all the ideas

Yes Wranglers are stretchy.  Got mine at Walmart and Tractor Supply.

4/3/2026 6:14pm

Yes knee pads fit. The slimmer Dharco/fox ones are best to go under. The Troy Lee Knee sleeve is also pretty sleek under them.

Also, on the wear them to work and post work rip train.

My GForm knee pads fit under ATGs.

As others have mentioned above, Wrangler ATG pants are great! The Menards near me sells them for $30.

I have a pair of the very first TLD skyline camo pants, so that makes them about 5 yrs ago, it is my most worn pant and they are starting to pill a bit, but im shocked how long they've lasted...it was a product I wanted to bring to market for a while and we moved fast during covid to get them to market, at $109 at the time, it was good value and they fit a lot of body types well. I left TLD in 2022, but still a fan of the brand---now that being said, we had a company parking lot race wednesday at SRAM (colorado) where I work, and I didnt have time to kit up, so wore my DUER jeans that I came to work in. Only rode about 5 miles between warm up and my race lap, but it was first time I rode a bike in 'jeans'...I could see myself riding in those, certainly in the bike park anyway...but if im doing any sort of decent mileage, I can't see myself wearing anything other than skylines.

Wrangler "khaki" stretch pants for DH.  Or Walmart stretch chinos (also my standard pants for non-riding).  Shorts, I've switched from Fox to either board shorts or Walmart stretchy shorts.  Name brand shorts and pants are ridiculously expensive.

When It's cooler out and I'm not riding super long or hard, I'll just wear my dickies carpenter jeans. They make you feel more hesh than anybody else at the dirt jumps

4/13/2026 6:59am

I ride in $30 Amazon running joggers with vents on them year round. (5 pairs for the price of one pair of MTB pants) The zippers on the pockets are much better and less prone to breaking than some real MTB brand pants I’ve had. Everything rips in a crash and these do too but none have been rendered unusable in the past 4 years from a crash. They don’t have belt loops but I just wear a stretchy Arcade brand belt and fold the waistband over it. If I’m using a hip pack then that’s the belt.

I've been using some TrueWerk work pants to good effect, not cheap but if you already have them why not.
