Muc-Off Sealant - Is it possible to be so bad?

In July, I bought this sealant made by Muc-Off to use on my new gravel bike. Despite my friend's comments saying this was crap, I insisted because sealants have been around since 2001 and 24 years after I consider there is no secret behind it. Especially for a great MKT company like Muc-Off.

Well, I was wrong. Water and glue probably would seal better than this product. It failed even on super small punctures and 55 psi max. On 2 occasions I was obligated to be rescued due to this incompetent formulation. Well, if it was not enough look at the photos below and see what this product made on my frame and components. It's basically glued.

I sent an e-mail to Muc-Off customer Service and the answer was "amazing": They asked if I checked their website where they mention that the product needs to be removed from the frame and parts immediately after the puncture - WTF? I have used the majority of sealants in the market: Stan's, FinishLine, Continental, Joe's, Effetto Mariposa, Brazilian Brands... What if we dont have how to cleaning immediately? If we are in a stage race? If we are delayed to do another thing after the stupid sealant did not do the job?

They said I can try to remove it with their Remover and when I inquired if they would send it to me they said: We can offer a discount. I prefer to set my money on fire instead of buying any other product made by this MKT company.

Anyone can indicate a good product that can solve my problem without damaging the frame and components?

I swear off muc off sealant. Stan's is okay but I use Orange seal or orange seal endurance, as they work best for me. I've had nothing but bad experiences with the muc off sealant which is a shame because their bike cleaner and chain lubes are pretty decent.

I just had to retape both of my wheels because after 6 months of riding the muc-off tape decided it was done sticking and let all of the sealant under the tape and into my rims, super fun. The rims were built up from new and the tape was applied by the wheel builder. It held fine right up until it didn't. Found the rear wheel flat heading out to a ride and the front wheel started going flat mid ride.

I purchased some Muc-Off sealant at one time, because I was annoyed with the flip top on the large Stans bottles coming open or breaking off, leading to sealant spills in my travel tool box. I was having issues with a tire seating with cush core and had to take it to my bike shop to handle. When I came back to pick it up, they said, "Please never use MucOff sealant again. In fact, we'll sell you some of our bulk sealant bags at cost if you won't use it anymore." 😂

Back in 2017ish I dabbled with road tubeless. I found out pretty quickly that even with my progressive for the time 30c tires @ 80psi would not hold tubeless sealant, even on micro slices from glass shards, due to the high pressures. Even as low as 50psi was a struggle. I've seen this issue with MTB tire volumes when you exceed 35psi. I came to the conclusion that tubeless is fine for offroad pressures of 35psi or lower, but anything higher gets a tube.

I run Stan’s in tubes on my commuter road/gravel bike. Holds air for a long time and plugs thorn holes.

Agree sealant can’t fix holes with high pressure behind it.

Ive sworn off their lubes.  Have a dry n a wet I've been using for a few years, replenishing as I run out.  Wondering my chains have never been nastier.  Turns out its a crap product that's a magnet for dirt dust n grime.  Moved back to rock n roll or whatever its called and its like ive taken a portal to a new universe.  All from a stupid chain lube.

OP, sorry to hear about your bike's finish. I would try a matte finish cleaner first and see if it lifts the dry sealant. Normally, I'd recommend a spray polish or lubricant for this kind of job - sticky residue often comes of under that kind of treatment - however, that may leave your finish glossy.

If the matte finish cleaner doesn't work, try a spray of contact cleaner in a rag and wipe carefully in a a hidden location to see if it bleaches or mars your carbon finish. If not, have at it!

I went down the rabbit hole of lube science (that sounds dirty for some reason) on zero friction cycling and some others and mucoff apparently has some of the worst ones out there.

Been using c3 ceramic dry for a while now and it’s been fine if I’ve reapplied after every ride but I’m gonna deep clean my chain in the ultrasonic and get some Silca Synergetic as a comparison on the mtb and taking the dive on waxing on the road bike.

We got caught in the muc-off Scheme, I dont think ill ever use any of the products again.(except rotor covers)

Their lube is awful, the cleaner is a scam, Sealant sucks and is a PIA to clean up.

Thank you, Falcon! I'll try that.

I wonder if the "magic" fuck-off remover actually removes the terrible sticky residue that their tape leaves behind. Nothing seems to work on that devil's jizz.

For rims taped with mucoff without my consent , I had good luck on aluminium rims with WD40 (the classic multi purpose spray), it’s still a tedious job but much faster than anything I’ve tried.

What does MKT mean here?

It was Stan’s when I first went tubeless, so it’s Stan’s forever. Tried some Joe’s that I got for free once, Slime is from Nickelodeon. I looked into mixing up a bucket of homemade sealant but it just doesn’t make sense. Never heard anything good about MucOff sealant. Thank you your attention to this splatter.

I've had great luck with Stans, Orange seal, and most recently, Wade Simmons' godfathers garage sealant in my Enduro bikes and gravel bike, although others have had issues with godfathers in higher pressure situations with side wall seeping. I stopped using Muc-off when i realized it was terrible at getting around the tire fast enough and didn't seal around inserts very well (And I'm a straight liner hack so I need them). I find GFG and Orange seal create a membrane inside the tire that easily seals punctures and keeps more air in the tires between rides. Orange seal is my champ on this one through since GFG can leak through thinner sidewalls in higher pressure tires.

The lubes. I mean, I don't give my bikes the attention they need as I fix others all day, so muc-off dry in Alberta worked ok if it was applied every ride, but otherwise they are meh. Currently I've had Godfathers dry in my truck, which not only seems to have finally united a few very opinionated mechanics I work with after years of lube arguments between both a long distance racer (Like silk road long) and a long time pro mechanic that sues what gets people going for the weekend, but seems to work is the dust better than most and for longer.l have moved off muc-off and and finish line to GFG or waxing depending on customer needs in the shop I'm at.

Except for Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner, does they have any ok or good products?

I have tried a lot of their lubes, sealant and shine/polish products, with poor results.

Well that's disappointing.  Having given up on Stan's because it's never actually plugged a hole of any size (at any pressure) in my experience, I tried Caffelatex, which was similarly disappointing, and now I have a bottle of Muc-off waiting to go.  Do I even bother?

Nah.  It’s significantly worse than Stan’s.

I've been using the GFG sealant since it came out and the dry lube as well. I've had nothing but good experiences, although I don't run thin sidewall tires or high pressures. I previously go sucked into the WPL world and their stuff was not good. The sealant was mediocre, the chain lubes made everything gross, and the fork boost product actually made suspension worse and ruined droppers. But good for WPL selling to Stan's and taking the pay cheque and pawning their stuff off. Very please with the GF stuff, and also who doesn't want to support Wade?!

I found a bottle of Mucoff C3 lube of some sort in my shop and it is so thick I can't believe I ever used it on a chain. It is now been repurposed into cutting oil for when I thread steer tubes for OneUp EDC tools.

I would actually say to you to return that Muc-Off shit and use Joe's or Stans.

I couldn’t even get muc off sealant out of the bottle because it’s so thick and clumpy and gluey. So I have no idea how it works in the real world. I chalked it up a loss, threw out the bottle, and went back to orange seal

How this company is in business is beyond me, and how they afford to co sponsor a major team is even further beyond my comprehension. Maybe they’re an international money laundering scheme?

Stan’s is good, Orange Seal Endurance is gooder.

I used Muckoff tubeless tape once, holy crap was it bad. They sell some good generic brushes with their logo and a markup…

I've never tried Muc-off, but I'm with several other posters above and swear by the Orange Seal. I had OK luck with Stan's but I like the Orange Seal (standard) much better.

I have had way better luck with Muc off then the ones everyone says is good, Stan’s and Orange.  Stan’s just turns to giant bugger so quick.  Orange worked worse than water would.

Hat's off to Muc-Off's marketing department because everything I've tried from them from lubricants to tape to valves has been the absolute worst. Actually the frame protector has been decent for what I paid though.

I have tried a lot of their lubes, sealant and shine/polish products, with poor results.

Their solid products like valves and accessories are fine IMHO, but stay far away from their liquids.
