11/17/2024 1:37am Dale's "experience" contradicts everyone else's. So much so that NSMB actually went out of their way to call it out. Ride them before you talk shit. His lever force test was pseudoscientific junk at best.

11/15/2024 1:29pm Whoa whoa whoa don't go giving the marketing people any idea's like that. Soon a 45mm stem will be marketed as 10% more compact than a 50mm stem.

11/14/2024 9:21am I think they’re trying to do two things with the brand simultaneously. They’re trying to position it as the cool freeride brand with things like the Bomber DJ, the 58 and Super Z. But they’re also trying to create an offering to compete with the ultra cheap RS offerings in the OEM space (like the 35 Gold and Silver) without...

11/13/2024 12:42pm The bigger wheel rolls faster because rocks, roots, etc. are smaller relative to the size of the wheel. This means you’ll carry more speed downhill, and wont have to work as hard on the uphill.

11/13/2024 11:41am I think the Medium is probably for a kid on the smaller end to grow into. I don’t see someone 5’9” starting on a Scout even though they’re in the recommended size range. If you’re already in the size range of “adult” bikes then you should start there. In my opinion, dual 27.5 bikes for average sized riders (and larger)...

11/13/2024 8:03am They’re listing it in their “Youth” section alongside the Bandit and Ripcord. Teens and tweens are kids too. 😉

11/12/2024 7:50pm First off, thank you! And that’s a solid question. You can FEA full frames and estimate deflections, but you’re making a lot of assumptions, and they start to stack on each other, so things can stray from reality quickly. And speed to reality is crucial. Using FEA is useful but only for very basic analysis and often you can guess what's going to happen: I made the chain stay bigger, it got stiffer. FEA is useful for validating a scenario where I wanted it exactly X amount stiffer and then you verify in the test lab. I’ve always wondered if...

11/11/2024 2:54pm I’m not a petrochemical engineer, but I’m assuming there’s a 0-100% range because the fluid is a mix of chemicals with different heat capacities and boiling points? If so, I’m not sure the 100% boiling temperature would matter. I think as soon as any significant percentage of the fluid boils, your brake is useless until it cools. (No idea what...

11/11/2024 1:57pm You could do a materials test pretty easily. You would soak a bunch of different brands seals in different fluids for an extended period. Then you’d measure for swelling and loss of tensile strength.

11/11/2024 1:11pm I think it does have the relevant info though. If I’m correctly looking at that, “Siedebeginn” is “start of boiling” which is 360c And they test per astm d2887. I don’t know why they say there’s a 60c range on it though.

11/11/2024 12:13pm Because their claimed performance is such an outlier, I’m slightly skeptical of the Bionol and Gold fluid claims. I haven’t been able to find any real information on them other than marketing material. I’d love to see an actual Technical Data Sheet for them. Past a certain point it doesn’t matter though. The ETFE liner in your brake hose will...

11/11/2024 9:45am Dot 5.1 has a slightly better minimum spec than dot 4, but once you get into high performance fluids it really doesn’t matter. For example, the minimum “wet” boiling point for dot 4 and 5.1 is 311 or 356 Fahrenheit respectively. Redline RF-600 dot 4 has a wet boiling point of 400f. Wilwood XR race dot 5.1 has a wet...

11/6/2024 10:39am I feel like I'm saying the same things over and over here, so this is gonna be my last post on the subject. I had to do this on two separate sets of T4V4s — two bikes, four calipers total, purchased in pairs about six months apart from each other — in order to get them working. I agree I shouldn't have had to do it, but I also definitely had to, as out-of-the-box performance was dire and fiddling with the pistons individually loosened up the seals and fully resolved the issues I had. Similarly, SRAM doesn't mention the piston...

11/6/2024 8:09am Yeah, I wasn’t talking about servicing old brakes. My point was that extensive service was required on a set of brand-new brakes to get useful performance out of them, and I only brought that up in response to an assertion that SRAM was the only brake manufacturer whose brakes did not work perfectly out of the box. All brakes, in my experience, require a certain degree of fiddling on initial setup, and the Mavens seem in the middle of that spectrum to me, based on my experience with them.

11/5/2024 10:38am The wheels are laced to DT 240 hubs though. I just checked and it’s $15,500 USD. That’s a bit more than the Yeti or Santa Cruz offerings but I don’t think any of them are offering the Live Valve suspension.

11/5/2024 8:06am I had the same symptoms as they did on mine, and I swore up and down that something was actually wrong with the brakes. No matter how many times I bled them, they would pump out on rapid lever pulls. I met a guy from a shop who swore they could fix them and I had to eat some humble...

11/4/2024 1:16pm It's not in the manual, it's in their service procedure videos. The URL for that is in the manual, but IIRC the videos themselves are hosted on YouTube. I had to massage sticky pistons on two different pairs of V4 calipers in order to get them dialed. And given that they had T4 levers which had at the time just been released, I have a hard time believing they were on a dusty shelf. You say it just isn't necessary, but my initial install of both was to trust the written procedure in the manual which got me some wildly...

11/4/2024 10:00am There is going to be very inefficient heat transfer between the pads and the heat sink compared to the shimano version with the them being integrated. You could increase the thermal transfer if you used some kind of thermal compound but I’m not sure how that would stand up to water/mud. It will do something but just not nearly as good as having the pad bonded to the heatsink.

11/4/2024 9:27am I guess I was the only one to sit through Hope's setup and bleed procedure videos? They very clearly talk about loosening up the piston seals on new calipers by extending single pistons, one at a time, then resetting them and centering them in the caliper. "Play around with it and you'll find a sweet spot" in a thick Lanky accent and everything. I'm totally with you on wanting brakes to be less fiddly out of the box, but every single manufacturer has their own version of this kind of stuff, plus whatever local knowledge shop mechanics have about how...
