Correct, the Hopes lack feedback when the pads contact the rotor. There’s also a lot of physical lever movement required to go from say 10% to 60% brake force. I’m pretty sure this is just a limitation of physics when the master cylinder has a big mechanical advantage over the pistons and you don’t have a cam or link to...

Having to set air pressure, rebound and compression automatically makes full suspension bikes a bad design compared to hardtails. If a product requires a certain setup to give a net positive, it is not a bad design per-se. Not following said instructions and saying the product is bad is bad reviewing. Speaking in general terms, not Mavens specifically, as I hardly know what's going on with them outside this topic and haven't tried them in real life so can't comment on them. Regarding Dale's review and my original comment @Eae903 my comment was aimed at comments from this thread, I...

Yea, don't get me wrong, it's absolutely a stiffer initial lever than most brakes on the market today. I just don't think this contributed to Dale's hand problems or fatigue. It does have a firm feel when you start pulling it, but my experience is that once the pads engage, that feel remains mostly consistent at the lever especially for the given power output. This is in contrast to other brakes that may have a light initial feel to the pull but ramp up considerably once the pads engage. I'd venture if you measured the average amount of lever force...

On the dyno a crappy Sram organic and an aggressive organic race pad like Hope Green that the V4’s got isn’t really a fair comparison. I’d be much more interested in dyno tests with control pads. I think the Maven would stack up much higher against the competition in terms of hard numbers. Riding Mavens on my DH bike for...
The heavy pull force on mavens is only the static friction breakaway force as you move past the start of the cam. It’s a bit like getting a Shimano servowave lever moving. Once you have the brake lever moved a couple of mm it lightens up dramatically. If you’re dragging the brakes you’re not fighting it. That’s the elephant in...

I'll brace for the downvotes, but at least explain my position. Dale's "review" was poor at best and at worst he propagated some new brake testing technique that means nothing, but seems like it does. For starters, I have major hand problems, in the sense that I haven't been able to ride in 7 months due to trying to let the nerves in my hands heal and may need 2 additional surgeries on top of the previous 2 I had just to regain the ability to ride and function, so hand fatigue is something I'm very familiar with. Most people...

Not super heavy, only race enduro recreationally, Mavens are my favorite brakes. Had Saints, Saint/XT Combo and Curas on my own bikes, have tried Maguras, Codes and Hopes on other bikes. Mavens are the first brake where I feel like I don’t need more power out of it and the modulation is still there. I found that I need to think about braking a lot less. Lever force is only a problem at the beginning of the stroke, once you reach the bite point it’s completely fine and unless you have weak hands shouldn’t be a problem for any decently...

Dale stone, the guy who portrays that he 'knows it all' but has a terrible brake technique and blames all the brakes.

Whoa whoa whoa don't go giving the marketing people any idea's like that. Soon a 45mm stem will be marketed as 10% more compact than a 50mm stem.

I think they’re trying to do two things with the brand simultaneously. They’re trying to position it as the cool freeride brand with things like the Bomber DJ, the 58 and Super Z. But they’re also trying to create an offering to compete with the ultra cheap RS offerings in the OEM space (like the 35 Gold and Silver) without...

The bigger wheel rolls faster because rocks, roots, etc. are smaller relative to the size of the wheel. This means you’ll carry more speed downhill, and wont have to work as hard on the uphill.

I think the Medium is probably for a kid on the smaller end to grow into. I don’t see someone 5’9” starting on a Scout even though they’re in the recommended size range. If you’re already in the size range of “adult” bikes then you should start there. In my opinion, dual 27.5 bikes for average sized riders (and larger)...

First off, thank you! And that’s a solid question. You can FEA full frames and estimate deflections, but you’re making a lot of assumptions, and they start to stack on each other, so things can stray from reality quickly. And speed to reality is crucial. Using FEA is useful but only for very basic analysis and often you can guess what's going to happen: I made the chain stay bigger, it got stiffer. FEA is useful for validating a scenario where I wanted it exactly X amount stiffer and then you verify in the test lab. I’ve always wondered if...

I’m not a petrochemical engineer, but I’m assuming there’s a 0-100% range because the fluid is a mix of chemicals with different heat capacities and boiling points? If so, I’m not sure the 100% boiling temperature would matter. I think as soon as any significant percentage of the fluid boils, your brake is useless until it cools. (No idea what...
