MrDuck Added a comment about bike check Starling Spur
11/4/2024 12:39pm Hell yeah! Curious how Effigear compares to a Pinion, but either way a gearbox enduro bike is now a thing I didn't know I needed.

11/3/2024 9:27pm It makes very little sense to have the fins integrated in the brake pads and throw them away every time you wear out a set of pads. If you still want fins, doing it the way they did is the best. Having them non removable could be a pain and I see the point BK was making regarding seeing the pistons, having them removable would make it possible to run the brakes without them and causing problems (pistons advancing). But otherwise your comments are very much what is to be expected - haters gonna hate.

11/1/2024 3:16pm I'm sorry, but all of their issues do make them sound exactly like rubes. Managing to pop out a piston while doing piston massage? If you're doing what you're supposed to (leave pads in, insert thin side of pad spacer, advance pistons until pads hit the spacer, hold, flip the pad spacer to use thick side to force them back, repeat), that's not even physically possible. Like, there's not enough space for the piston to come out. The problem with a lot of reviewers and even bike shop mechanics is that they assume that because something looks similar to something...

11/1/2024 12:12pm Fat tires has been my use case for these bike TPMS. I currently use SKS Airspy with +-1% accuracy for enduro fat biking where 0.5 PSI difference matters and you have to adjust pressure each lap. I start off with roughly 8-9 PSI for the forest road climb and then release a bunch of air while looking at my Garmin until the pressure is dialed for the descent (1.5 - 5 PSI). It just takes away one step of connecting a pressure gauge on and off in the cold. Another cool thing is seeing how much your pressure drops when...

11/1/2024 12:11pm yea, that level of accuracy at that price is certainly something. i've learned enough about metrology over the years that cost goes up with increased accuracy, not down. edit: the tirewiz at 2% accuracy would be 0.5 psi at 25 PSI. i'm not sure increased resolution at those pressures would produce any tangible benefits or discernable differences except for maybe fat tires, where pressures are often <10psi

10/31/2024 9:18pm yeah i guess not, you only compress a a small portion of the tyre's total volume when slamming into a rock. Bummer.

10/31/2024 9:17pm You can make any shock "bottomless" if the graph just never reaches 100%! They also normalised all of the springs at sag, which isn't realistic - the linear can would probably have the least sag and the progressive one the most if you plotted what a rider would actually use.

10/31/2024 9:15pm I'd love this. As much as I love my bikes being reliable and maintenance-free, I check tire pressures every ride. If I could connect to it with a phone just to check before a ride, I'd be happy. All the puncture features are neat too. As long as it can stretch around a schrader though, ain't going back to that...

10/31/2024 9:13pm got an email about this kickstarter for an in-tire pressure gauge that connects to a garmin device called Outrider. looks interesting. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/outride/outrider-a-tire-pressure-s… "A low-cost, real-time tire pressure sensor made to improve the safety and performance of your bike's only two contacts with the ground. It fits securely inside of your tubeless tires and gives real-time pressure readings and alerts to your Garmin device via wireless transmissions."

10/29/2024 11:14pm how can the lever feel score be so high on sram brakes? genuine question, i'd give them a 5/10 max just because the shape is nice

10/28/2024 10:20pm It's cool that they offer coil now. But I don't think I could give up the tunability and ending-stroke support of their 3-chamber air spring. It's one of the few forks I've ridden lately that truly becomes more controlled and supportive the more energy you drive through it.

10/28/2024 10:19pm The air springs on those two forks are also very good. Over the last few years, fork manufacturers have really figured out the relationships between the positive and negative air volumes, and tuned their air springs to match their dampers. There is not a big difference in performance between these three forks at all, whether comparing the coil or the air sprung version of the RXF38. For me, it all comes down to the kind of trails you ride. If you ride very big features, you may find that an air spring gives you a way to dial in the...

10/23/2024 6:50pm One of the biggest complaints of the RS-1 was how fiddly the wheel install was… There are lots of trade offs to manage with either design, some are 100% not performance based but important regardless.

10/23/2024 6:50pm i wanted to touch on your second point re: USD forks - i'm not sure the difference in orientation would necessarily be inherently that much better. Given the parts are machined vs cast, it may be easier to hold better tolerances, which would most likely help - would be interesting to see a comparison in the deflection of a USD fork vs cast lowers.

10/23/2024 6:47pm Totally, I'm also skeptical of home burnishing wizards and how much of the Great Bushing Epidemic of 2024 is real vs. imagined for social media noise. Based on the video and the comments from Diaz, it seems like it wasn't a bushing issue, " Again NO BUSHING BURNISHING NEEDED OR WOULD HAVE EVEN HELPED." Seems like it was a misalignment in the actual casting or a mis-facing of the casting's axle interface that resulted in a twisting of the lowers when the axle was clamped. Could have been the CSU alignment too, but based on the text from Diaz it...

10/23/2024 6:45pm Or run an Ohlins or Manitou and get both a supportive air spring and great damping. The CSUs are still a problem, haven't met one from any brand that can last a full season of hard riding under my stunning mediocrity. I've accepted that CSUs are a wear item and I might just start buying spares when they're in stock. Bring on the enduro dual crowns.

10/23/2024 6:36pm Slightly off topic, but what I don't understand is why we continue to go the route of press fit CSUs. There has to be a better solution. Also, plenty of people (myself included) used to say "it just creaks, at least it won't fail" which I now do not belive to be true. I've seen CSUs go from creaking to the steerer coming out of the crown (Fox). Some ideas... 1) Explore the use of an adhesive: Whether something like Lord's adhesive, which is strong enough to bond critical chassis components together in snowmobiles and cars or something else, this...
