4/27/2026 5:03am Have had a couple of rides on the new Romy in the 29" Gravity Pro soft flavour in the rear and I really like it! The new gravity casing is notably stiffer than the old Gravity Albert I was using, was pushing as hard as I could into corners and it felt super stable and supportive. Feels like it rolls really nicely, but with the chunky corner nobs and a nice transition with the centre knobs I have no complaints tipping it into corners. Tested with the MM trail ultra soft and Albert trail soft fronts and my preference is...

4/26/2026 6:09pm I got a good ride in on the Tacky Chan Gravity Pro. These finally are the radials for me. They roll fast, brake well, dig into loose dirt, and don't squirm on hardpack or smashing berms. In the new Grav Pro casing, the radial effect seems less than when I tried the Albert or MM, but I think that's for the better. They feel kinda slightly more muted than a normal casing most of the time, but if you hit roots they conform really well rather than pinging off. Really pushing hard into berms or loose corners, they deform and...

4/26/2026 8:07am If you take a look at the Chinese bike brands making an impact, their road bikes are entirely house-brand (or house-made) components with one exception, drivetrain (which also means brakes of course). For those with mountain bikes, it is suspension and drivetrain/brakes. Consider how Avinox has integrated motor, battery, controller, and software to great acclaim then ask yourself why this archaic devise is dangling from the frame, in harm's way while simultaneously impairing aesthetics and systems integration. Fully agree on drivetrain wear and unnecessary gearing.

4/26/2026 7:58am The big incentive for DJI to take out SRAM/Shimano is I don't think the current drivetrains can really handle this kind of power for these durations. Sure a quick sprint here and there is no big deal, but turn that 3s sprint into 30+mins every ride and you've got massive drivetrain wear problems. Also with the torque these things make, you don't need anything like the gear range we have now. I'm already seeing people complaining about the rate at which they go through drivetrain parts (and the traditional grinding paste lube people use isn't helping anything). The big advantage...

4/24/2026 8:13am Most of you probably won't like hearing this. I certainly didn't. Earlier this week I had a chat with a guy who works in a product management role for Ralf Bohle GmbH, which is the owner of the Schwalbe tire brand. Mainly I asked a bunch of XC racing related questions, about compounds, casings, radial ply, rolling resistance testing, wheter we'll ever see the speediest XC casing with a black sidewall and why they felt they needed to change their naming scheme for casings and compounds. The gist of it is that they are hard at work behind the scenes...

4/23/2026 12:05pm I think a downtube experiences tension and compression, but I think for the majority of impacts its experiencing them as a compression event. That's part of the reason why roadbikes can have such tiny toptubes and still need such huge downtubes. The early 2010's TCR is a great example of this extreme difference in tube sizes: Here's my caveman understanding of those forces (not an engineer): But I don't even think that compressive force is the main reason downtubes need to be stiff. I think the main reason is that it connects contact points. It's the most direct line between...

4/22/2026 2:29pm I have very limited (none) education in engineering, and i still can't understand the need for two chains? To snap a chain in a straight line demands more force than a sprint from the start gate. So please internet, give me some answears!

4/21/2026 11:40am While I’ll never own one, I have to give credit to specialized for creating this. It’s giving me nostalgia vibes from the late 90’s/early 00’s when there was a lot of weird and wacky experimentation in DH. The fact that after 3+ years of development, this is an actual production frame (regardless of cost) is pretty cool.

4/21/2026 9:22am I want to see Shimano release something developed from their 2019 internal "gearbox" patent. It had an even higher output shaft position and would make high-pivots easier to pull off without an idlers.

4/21/2026 4:52am Can you please not drag your abrasive views on world situation into every damn topic? We're talking about bikes not world politics. As for the new Demo and Sram drivetrain thingamajiggy, will it be available for other brands besides Specialized too? Does it circumvent DWs twochainz patent?

4/18/2026 9:55pm I will never understand the “it’s a whole separate sport” thing. I ride my ebike exactly like my analog bike just do more laps. Literally every other person I know with an ebike does the same and is not going out and climbing up downhill trails in boost. I see plenty of e-bikes on the lift at the bike park being ridden like analog bikes. The innovation is happening in the motor and battery because the “bike part” of the tech has plateaued. Amflow proved this by making a decent riding bike out of thin air.

4/18/2026 5:34pm So at Sea Otter I asked Continental if the compounds stay the same across the tread patterns and they said yes. So a Xynotal Soft is the same compound as a magnotal soft even though the xynotal is part of their "gravity" range and the magnotal is part of their trail/xc range. I forgot to ask if the casings are the same across tread patterns too... I'm guessing yes. Meaning does a 2.4 xynotal enduro have the same casing as a kryptotal-fr enduro? If the casing and the compound really are the same, then all you are choosing is the...

4/17/2026 7:29am e*thirteen Radial Tires e*thirteen has new radial casing tires in their Grappler (29”, 27.5”) and Grappler RS (27.5”) models. The tires will be available within the next month and will retail for $79.95 USD. The casing has 6 layers under the tread, 4 under the sidewall, a woven protection layer in the sidewall, and an apex at the bead. Their goal was to give the tire more support with the thicker apex and more layers, while still angling the plies so you get the supple, damp feel of a radial. The layers are placed at a 65° angle, which they...
