Schwalbe has been doing custom hotpatches for their riders in recent years - both for World Cups sometimes and for Rampage.

Far from the truth on several points. Good and competent shops are hard to find these day. No disrespect to the GREAT shops out there (because they do exist also), but they will tell you the same because they spend loads of time fixing other shops mistakes. The problem was made far worse during the pandemic when bike shops were desperate for good help and were forced to lower their standards just to get the help they needed during the boom. "You can change a flat? Sweet. You're our new mechanic." Friends who work on the inside of the industry...

Virtually every shop I have ever been in: “We don’t have that at the moment, but we can order it for you.” I can order it too, and it’ll come straight to my house. I’m going to install it myself anyway regardless of where it was purchased. Why would I make a second trip? Complete bikes are the same. I’m going to go over your build with a fine tooth comb, so why wouldn’t I just build it myself from the get-go. I don’t understand people arguing so hard to support brick and mortar just because that is the long...

Just about every brand now sells direct, coming from a Yeti dealer and 10+ year industry employee, it's the way the industry has been going for years, you dont adapt you get passed. Yeti can offer a better retail price (getting below Specialized MSRP) and lots of Yeti customers will still go to a shop as that is just the type of consumer they are. Don't think it will be a huge difference in the long game

The Manitou Dorado really is an incredible fork. They have the patent on the hex axle (guessing it expires soon) that resolved a lot of flex issues for DH diameter stanchions that moto forks don't have. Hayes just doesn't have the market penetration of Fox & RockShox, nor budget, to get it back on the top step. If a World Cup team w/ a proven winner tossed the Dorado on for next year, I have zero doubts it would hit the top step. Then suddenly people would pee their pants for Hayes/Manitou again.

also, all this talk of "lets turn downhill into X" just doesn't make sense. what's wrong with letting downhill be downhill?

High level DH racing as a sport is more akin to world cup alpine downhill ski racing than all these other sports it's compared to (F1, moto-whatever) in my opinion, and can maybe get to that eventual level. It's not all that relatable to the public at a high level, requires a high level of technology, money and training, but you can still go by a lift pass and participate as a punter at the local hill. Does a successful end result mean DH gets the occasional in-season Saturday mid-day timeslot on your favorite mass sports market TV provider, like...

Funny. I almost started a very similar thread. Just so we are clear, I tried to distill Bruni's rant into one hypothesis. Please clean this up if I'm wrong... Hypothesis: If you cut the field to a more elite group you will be able to put on a better race with better TV qualities which will amount to higher dollar sponsors for those at the top. Listening to Bruni walk us through his logic I have to say, I do not agree. I've heard similar things for more than 2 decades, and it doesn't seem to me that this is...

I know someone mentioned that the Manitou Mezzer might get updated. Well, it's on sale for $660 on the Hayes site right now with low quantities, so I think that rumor might get verified soon.
