When you are paying your own way to the races and supporting yourself why would you promote a brand not helping you? They are still riding that frame. How did YT spoil them? By paying them a salary? Kolb said in the interview that he had higher paying offers and went on YT for the long term. That didn’t happen so why promote them?

Just watched the video, apparently team manager Gunnar is paying a lot of things out of his pocket despite absolutely not having to, now that is dedication and what a legend of a man. But in the end he also says all of the riders contracts have been/will be terminated so they are/will be free agents

Yes. Contracts are bilateral - they hold both sides to the terms set out. YT failing to pay would almost certainly be a material breach of contact, terminating the agreement and freeing the riders from their oblations as defined in the contract. We've already seen Osin race in unbranded kit so at least one rider views their contract as terminated.

Speaking of Brage... how has no one else signed him yet? He's the pinnacle of freeride mtb in the same way Loic or Jackson are the pinnacle of dh racing.

Not really down to get into the mud with all of the environmental permitting stuff which is really above my dirt-shaping pay grade, but misinformation about the crew test riding our own course build is where I draw the line. We rode it last week on trail bikes and will be riding more this week. T>B

One of the companies I consult for went through something similar: a private-equity exit gone wrong where the founder bought his business back from the PE firm for just 10% of the price he sold it for. Within a year, he had restored it to its former strength. The key difference here is Markus himself. He’s shown very little aptitude for running a sustainable business. Had a pleasure to work with many amazing people at YT. Hardworking individuals who were there either caring for real about riders or at least about the quality of their job. Friendly, chill, respectful. The leadership, however, was mostly a different thing (not without exclusions though).

As for the loss of SLX, there was too much fragmentation going on even in Shimano's four "serious" MTB groupsets. Each added feature was a new product level. Chances are if you want one of the features of XT that Deore doesn't have, you want all of them. SLX did have the nicest paint colour though, so that's a shame.
