On one hand, it seems the motors are so good you don't hear all that much about issues, even as they overtake entire trailheads (especially in SoCal)... But on the other hand if you specifically ask for issues, in an enthusiast forum, you can end up with a laundry list of almost every motor in the industry failing for some unlucky fellows. But I just want to get a more general idea of the emtb motor landscape since I have not seen anyone provide anything close to actionable data on this concept (and I want to know if they really...

Apologies if this is too far off topic, but Escape Collective just announced they're now cash-flow neutral (they've been running a deficit since they launched). Pretty impressive when you consider how much high-quality content they put out and and doubly so that it's funded entirely by member subscriptions.

My co's Q4 and year end results came out. Tariffs gobbled up 67 million dollars from production. A pal who works in the med field had his co get taken for 175 mill due to tariffs. And I do mean taken. There is little wonder why many of our (former/soon to be former) international trading partners are looking at their neighbors and across the ponds for reliable trade partners. I'll wager that on the big brand/OEM front, survival is job 1, and that means many lines will get cratered before they get replenished.

Analog riders are the new kooky single speeders. If you think motors make riding too easy then please don’t do the math for how much mechanical advantage gears give you. There isn’t a lot of juice to squeeze from frames since we’re mainly hitting human rights issues on how good a frame can be while still being affordable. We’re still probably not paying the true price for bike when you factor in environmental and human effects of the manufacturing process. That’s where I see the biggest need for innovation. It’s amazing to me though that you unironically list electronic shifting...

Just drop it please or indeed find the coil vs air thread. No, it is not the case. And if you have an air fork, I have no idea what do you do with it because between all the air forks I've had in a decade, I haven't spent enough on air seals nor grease to purchase a SINGLE coil spring for any fork. (not here to talk about whether I actually use it hard enough or whatever) Coil isn't innovation, certainly won't make your bike slacker nor longer. Whether it's better or not, this thread should be about innovation...

The designer should be selecting an appropriate fixing size/tool size for the application. Good design should make it easy for the user to get it right and hard for them to get it wrong.

Just because that is what is on your bike, does not mean it's well designed, some of these fixings/torque values are probably not the appropriate choice. In your example.the thread size is completely different between the two fixings though, so I would expect a different torque. Ideally this would be with a different tool size also. There is a great book called The design of everyday things, by Don Norman that I would recommend reading on the subject.

Maybe he’s also just not that cool of a dude to be around. The Venn diagram for people accused of SA (guilty or not) and being a giant prick is probably close to a circle. I wish he would just be forgotten.

Correct they are thermosets, most are very, very stiff in compressive loading situations, >30ksi. Just as stiff as the aluminum caliper under similar compressive loadings. The only reason there would be impressions and deformations in the phenolic piston blocks is due to poor design leading to stress raisers that allow for point loading putting the material into a plastic deformation condition above typical elastic conditions. I personally have never seen such issues with the phenolic inserts in my Hopes, and I have yet to ever hear of anyone mention it before. I don't have a stress-strain curve for Bakelite or...

Good question! ive been wanting to bring this up for a while - I feel like there is a lot to be concerned about with a number of large tech companies entering the biking market - if you look at the trends in other industries like lack of repairability and features being locked/disabled without a subscription. DJI is a prominent name but not the only one, I still wonder if there could be knock on effects with avinox even if they are "technically" a separate company, or at least slowly changing the operating model to being similar to drones and...

both (forbidden edruid, velduro rogue) were built up the week before the test event. the power was there, don’t get me wrong, but the force needed to pull them was so much more than the intends, especially at the beginning of the stroke. hence the comparison with XTs to codes.

This is a bit beyond this thread but thought someone here might like it. It made front page of HackerNews today... https://2026macro.vercel.app/ What this is: The author of this site synthesized a bunch of sell side research using LLMs. His method was clever, and good. He then bucketed everything into 10 categories. The reason its cool is its very challenging to get these reports unless you are on Wall St., work for a bank or ultra wealthy. Though we can't see the reports directly here, LLMs did a good job synthesizing the information. A really good place to spend an...

When I refer to "manpower" I am talking about our in-house capacity. We manufacture/assemble our posts in Taiwan in our own facilities with our own team of now 13 people. That means every single post is assembled by ourselves, not, as it is otherwise often the case, by a "partner"/factory/assembler who is contracted to do all the sourcing, manufacturing, assembly to get the product ready in the box to sell. We draw every single part, source the suppliers, have them made, get them to us and then put everything together in our own facilities with our own machines. No post...
